Title: Reading
Post by: kerry red on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 13:20:36
Know we haven't played them for ages but do people still see them as a local rival or has time apart dulled it?

Personally, I have never thought of them as anything other than just another club and would probably be the model to follow if possible.

Saying that, I enjoyed immensely Kuffour's best ever game for us at the Madjeski in that 3-0 win (or was it 3-1 - I had been on the beer)

Its another where they see us a rivals more than us them, or used to be.
Guess they have new higher league rivals now we have been left in their wake

Admire the way Madjeski took them forward tho, not so sure about the russian in there too now

The Reading rivalry has never enthused me. It's almost certainly due to lack of competitive fixtures over the last 20 years.

I acknowledge Oxford as the 'big one' but having been  raised in West Wilts, marrying in to a City supporting family and living in Bedminster, Bristol City is the 'big one' for me.

I'm probably on the same page as you Rich.  Coming from 'nam which at the time have had bristol and Swindon split pox and reading was never really a big thing for me.

A lot needs to change for the better in our case and the worse in their case, for this to be a regular fixture again. in the years since we last played them, they've become a Prem/Championship yo-yo team us more of a Div3/4 yo-yo team.

I suppose the best chance of meeting them is in the LC....especially as it's a comp we've never been drawn together in.

Couldn't care less about them. They're in the same ball park as Forfar or Colchester in my give a toss-ometer.
They hate Aldershot anyway so no need for them to hate anyone else.
They tried a few years ago to invent a hatred between themselves and us or Scum and there's not many things us and the Scummers agree on but Reading being irrelevant is one.

Kerry probably too new on the forum, but this has been done several times. It all depends where you were born. I was born in Reading so it's them I hate, as all of my reading supporting mates could confirm with conviction. I couldn't give a hoot about the bristol's, oxford a bit meh tbh.

Means and has always meant only slightly more to me than an average fixture. And I think thats only because I used to live in the area.

To me the rivalry is a bit like with Cheltenham.

Reading just about registers on the rivalry scale, but barely. Oxford and City top the list for me, in that order. Them I guess Rovers. Reading really would be on a par with Gillingham and Cheltenham - I don't much care, but it's nice to beat them purely because it winds them up.

We probably haven't played Reading in your time, but take it from me a Railwaymen v Biscuitmen game is infinitely more interesting than a game v Pikeys.

Title: Re: Reading
Post by: RedRag on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 18:57:41
I too was living in the Newbury area when I caught the Town fever but I can honestly say Reading was never about more than half-hearted local bragging rites.

I have walked casually right through pitched battles outside Elm Park in a way that I would never have dared outside the Manor or Ashton Gate.  Gills was a pretty hot atmosphere back in the day but agree not really sustainable.

True Rivals for me are Pox followed closely by Shitty.

Thereafter take your pick according to where you live, how often we have played recently, any recent off-pitch incidents, history etc

Too young. Couldn't really give a monkeys about 'em. Other than the next stop on the railway, I see no real connection.

I did enjoy giving them grief about losing to Swansea in that pre-season friendly in Di Canio's first year mind.

I've lived in Reading for nearly 30years and have never hated them. Think its because a lot of my closest mates are big fans. I also remember standing on their old South Bank with my mates in my teens when they were only getting 3-4k at home.

It's annoying that they're doing better than us but no hatred from me. Still massive when we play them though. That 3-1 was superb and has been mentioned more than a few times since. Ruddock was a fucking god that day!!!

Title: Re: Reading
Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 20:40:47
I don't hate Reading at all.  Even have a barely disguised admiration for what they have achieved, if I'm honest.  But...I would love to get that fixture back on a regular basis - because, after a few years of regular encounters, I think it could dwarf anything we have currently in terms of rivalry.

An exchange from another thread a couple of years ago, not long before the away game at Oxford, still sums up my thinking on this one...

I'm getting bored of this game already, can't wait for it to be over.

I don't even care if we win, lose or draw, just as long as we get promoted out of this shithole of a division.

This is precisely why I want out of this division, and want Oxford to stay in it.  As rivalries go, this is one is nasty, brutal and small time.  I want the game out of the way and then to leave Oxford in our shadow once again.  Hopefully, soon enough, we'll then get an opportunity to remind ourselves what big games vs City and Reading are like.

A ticket allocation of 1,250 for a game like this tells you everything you need to know about where Oxford and this rivalry sits in the pecking order.  Once we have redeveloped, we'll be giving Reading, City or whoever allocations of 4,000 to 5,000 and expecting the same in return.  Much more interesting.

Not sure we would take 4/5k anywhere these days in the league ( yeah I know 3k at Cov last season )

Rival games have a habit of changing the crowd make up tho - ppl who usually travel sometimes wont due to trouble and plenty come out the woodwork for exactly that

I think I was imagining what we could build after a few seasons at Reading's level.  Maybe 4,000 to 5,000 was stretching it a little, but the point stands.  The City and Reading rivalries were around decades before Oxford even existed...so the fixation a lot of fans have with Oxford has always irritated me a little.

The shitness of Oxford's ground and therefore crap allocation definately has a detrimental effect on the derby games there and therefore the rivalry as a whole at the moment.

Compare that to March 15th, around 3k in that away end at Ashton Gate will create an immense atmosphere and proper derby day feel.

I've always hated City more than Oxford anyway.

We haven't taken huge numbers to City in recent years.

1432 in the Carling Cup in 2011
1000ish(?) the year we got relegated
1826 in 2004 when Darius Henderson got that brace

The last time we got close to 3k was 2684 in the 03/04 season. Then again, who knows. If we're on a roll then optimism might swell the numbers. Plus it's been a while since we played there in the league.

Away followings have never been as vast as 3/4k. The biggest one's I remember are usually in seasons where we have something riding on the game or are doing quite well. If the boot was on the other foot and City visited us in March, I'd imagine they'd bring big numbers because they have more to lose as they (at the moment) are fighting relegation.

One of the best away followings given the context of a weekday night game and a wanky competition (Simod Cup) was Luton away.

Never felt so crushed at a ground since the 4-3 Arsenal game at the CG

I went to the cup game at Chelsea when about 500 town fans stood in the huge open away end out of a crowd of 7500. It was about -30c, and I had a denim jacket,  no hat and no gloves or scarf. What a twat. It was the game when hazard missed that could have taken the game to extra time. I think someone swallowed their tongue that night too. :sherlock:

But don't you just love the way that everyone ignores them ?

Used to have some fun at Elm Park though. They had a system, which seems unbelievable in this day and age - the police would quiz you to death at the entrance to the "uncovered" away end, to prove you were from Swindon. Then you could pay 50p to go through an internal turnstile into the "covered" home section.

They then used to look on bemused as it all kicked off in the Reading section.

He did play to the whistle (as did the Luton Keeper).  Unfortunately the whistle was from some cunt in the crowd.

That was probably the most packed away end I can remember watching Town away.
Not due to numbers, just the total lack of any space to move around it was mental.

I might be mistaken but I thought Bamber took a half hearted shot, & Sealey just stuck a leg out and diverted the ball for a corner (because he thought it was offside too)
