Title: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: DV on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 08:57:51 Last game of the season 0-0, very boring. We lifted the then division two championship.
A work colleague was saying last night all his mates bet him he would go on the pitch and sit in the centre circle 5 minutes before time. He alleges that he did it and when he was caught claimed the money was going to charity handed it over and that was that. I certainly don't remember that and I've got a fairly good memory. Anyone have an recollection or any footage. I expect it's complete bullshit anyway but it would be nice to prove the bullshitter is full of shit. Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 09:27:26 I skipped a study course that day to be there. Sell out crowd. No recollection of anyone on the pitch before full time though.

Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: Anteater on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 10:49:39 Even though I'd had a few that day I think I would have noticed. Sounds like B/S to me.

That was the only home game I managed to get to that season (at University and made the Northern away games instead) so that game sticks in my mind and I certainly don't remember that. Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 11:40:07 I recall the club in typical STFC style selling a load of seats in the TE to Stockport fans...who were then required to relocate elsewhere...not their fault. I feel a bit sorry for Stockport fans...now condemned to playing fellow norvern monkeys like Oxford City.

Yep, didn't he escape as well? That was the play-off season under King, only the ten years ago now... probably my favourite season.Took the stewards on a merry dance. Do remember being AT Grimsby one season when the home supporters were giving Bubbles a load of abuse over his size, he dropped his trousers and pants and mooned at them - and promptly got arrested by the local plod!! I did hear that Bubbles had died . . . . does any know if that is true?

That was the play-off season under King, only the ten years ago now... probably my favourite season. He got caught sadly but hilarious while he was on the loose. I think he was a St Joes pupil at the time ? Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 12:44:52 I was stewarding that game and nobody went on the pitch at all until after the players did their lap of honour after the game.
Boring dull game where the chief missed a sitter late on, a near full house that day too but with hardly any atmosphere, the chief gave me his shirt after the game and got all the players to sign it which is currently framed in my hallway. Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: 4D on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 13:16:39 In a word no. I sat at the back of the arkells by the townend and the game was so dull that a Mexican wave started, it kept stopping at the townend side of the DRS, to a lot of booing and renditions of "you don't know what your doing" :)

No idea about the stockport incident. Took the stewards on a merry dance. Was he ginger? I know a Ciren lad that did it by going in the disabled supporters area for easy pitch access. Got caught, was worried he wouldn't get to the World Cup if he got done, and hs dad had already booked the trip.. No recollection of any Stockport incident, just 90 minutes of waiting for the final whistle to go... Title: Re: Stockport at home (1996) Post by: dogs on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 20:03:10 My memory of the Stockport game was getting smashed in the face whilst in Stratton bank by a ball hit by Sean Connelly, 15 mins before kick off. Great!

He was at the match yesterday. Cheers for that, pleased the rumours were wrong, sounds about right, remember seeing that incident! We were complaining about him being arrested and nobody would take any notice of the abuse being shouted and spat at us by the Mariner's supporters. Still at least we are still a FL club!! The funny thing about Bubbles was that when the coppers picked him out of the ground they couldn't cuff his hands behind his back (as they couldnt reach) so they had to cuff his hands in front. I got married in the morning, went to football in the afternoon, and was rewarded with a six goal thriller and a bloke climbing up the pylon. England were on the way to beating the Aussies (Trent Bridge test?), so happy days. Made the church ceremony, skipped the sit down meal to go and watch Town and then back to the wedding for the evening do. |
