In all seriousness, fair play to the bloke.

Fair play, although as mentioned previously somewhere it shouldn't matter.

This. But the Stonewall's Director of Campaign's name made me smile...

Well done to him for being brave enough to come out. Still waiting for the first currently playing bloke to though. Wonder if anyone's taking bets on it?

Yeah, it shouldn't matter, but as there is no-one who is openly gay in professional football it obviously does.

An active player in this country would need some balls, opposing fans would rip them to shreds during games.

That American fella who came out after he left Leeds is still playing for LA Galaxy but I guess that is one of the most liberal cities going so doubt he gets any grief.

Did they look for his most stereotypically camp picture or what?

DER HAMMER! Fair play to the guy, but as above it really shouldn't be an issue!

As a standalone tag this headline is fine, but not sure about it in response to the news that has broken:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jan/08/thomas-hitzlsperger-der-hammer-villa-west-ham-everton

"Thomas Hitzlsperger: 'Der Hammer' who was never afraid of a challenge"

Do we have any gay loud-and-proud TEF's?

A quick search of gay bars in Swindon elicits two entries:

The MailCoach and The Pink Rooms. Also I see there is a gay sauna in the town centre.

http://www.mailcoachswindon.com/

http://www.thepinkrooms.co.uk/  - opens until 6am!!!!! Any other venue in Swindon licensed that late? "Round for a Pound (Buy a round at normal price and get the same round later for £1)"

Take care the missus aint around when opening the above links and make sure to clear your cache.

Me and the Mrs got refused admission to the pink rooms about two years ago.

Well she was steaming and clinging onto me for grim death. I wouldn't have let her in either and i was as sure as fuck not going in on my own. Just to clear up any misconceptions we were meeting her mate who was in there on some do to do with her son who worked in there. Why i even considered it i have no idea.

I swear someone else must be remember the guy who used to sell the Adver on the corner by the bakery on the Parade(?)... he used to shout incomprehensibly aimed at nobody in particular.

The row of shops by the tented market.
It had a proper roof  in them days,or was it a car park?  :"Harrys cut price" was on the end of the market before it became a car park and it reverted back to a market(tented).
Was a while ago and the offy near the Rolleston sold Thunderbird . Happy days.

He's been mentioned on the TEF before I think.  He had a child when he was 80? Or am I making it up?

Of course. It wasn't a trip to Swindon without hearing him. Used to stand by the bakery nearish Debenhams. I too though that bakery was Devon Savouries. They used to do a mean cheese and ham pastry thing.

Jimmy Wagstaff apparently

http://www.talkswindon.org/index.php?topic=7834.0

I remember him from a young age. Mum used to work in Jewellers just across from where he sold / shouted on the parade. She had a plan to shoot him on more than one occasion.

My mate once asked him if they stuffed new batteries up his arse every weekend.

"Fuck off" was his witty reply.

It was.  At one point there were three Devon Savouries.  One by the market, one at the top of town and one by the Adver man that Sonic mentioned.

Did they go out of business?  They were nicer than Greggs.

To be fair, eating the Advers sold by the guy who has bafflingly taken over this thread that (briefly) started out as being about openly gay footballers would be nicer than Greggs.

I only remember the yab yab man from down opposite tesco and debenhams by the now gone alleyway that led towards fleet street, where the public toilets were.
I thought the bakery by mcilroys was called Swiss chalet ?

That is exactly where he stood. Millets was on the corner of the alleyway. I remember those toilets, they had that horrible tracing paper for bog roll.

Mention of Devon Savouries took me immediately back to my yoof.....they did great pasties with a really good crumbly pastry.  Guess they disappeared when the Greggs of this world took over.

As for gay footballers.....why the hell is it still some sort of embarrassed, under the counter type reposnse, especially from the media?  Is football really still that macho?
