Of course we don't know the ins and outs, but it does sound like Rooney was very harshly treated under PDC, and sadly this appears to have affected his career subseqeuently.

Yes, di Canio seems to have left a trail of people who were badly scarred by his inhumane and manipulative behaviour. Still makes me angry. Narcissism is a clinical condition, for which he doesn't seem to have sought any treatment. I only hope this is the last money we'll have to write off as a result.

Won the league and had 3 cup runs though, winning isn't about being nice you big softie.

Lots of people took this view while he was here. I just never like seeing complete shits succeed, even at my club. The short-term success wasn't worth the collateral damage.

Hang on a minute here. Rooney had a decision whether to sign for us given that by then Paolo had a reputation. We don't know he was inhumane to Rooney - this is pure guesswork.
Rooney took a risk and has been very well rewarded for that risk.

I guessing its a fitness thing. He had skill to dribble around players, but lack the fight to run up and down the wing for 90 minutes.
I hope he doesn't fade away and keeps at it.

Well not quite guesswork. We know that he was ostracised from the squad and Cooper's clearly thinks that di Canio shot his confidence. Don't you work in HR? You should know that bullying isn't one of the risks an employee should have to factor in.

You say inhumane, I say hard work

Although I doubt either of us attended training....

“When I came to the club he was part of the squad and had brilliant ability but was maybe just a bit disillusioned with the previous regime,” Cooper said. “He was totally ostracised under that.

“He came back into the fold with me and Kevin (MacDonald) and showed glimpses of the ability which made the football club pay what they did for him.

“I think that really knocked him back, the way he was treated. Once you lose that momentum it’s difficult to then get it back but I’m sure that if he wants to get it back and push himself then he can make a career out of the game.

Whether being ostracised is considered inhumane is a discussion point, however it didn't do Rod Hull's career any harm.

However, Rod Hull's football/TV repair man career was a disaster...

Wasnt he fixing the aerial to watch a Man Utd game or something? Bet he wouldnt have tried to fix it this season if he was still here

I hope he finds a club, and does well.

I think we can all make educated guesses to what happened under PDC!

Rod Hull? Unlikely on both counts, I'd have thought

We went from League 2 to League 1, we have less debt than before he was at the club. So I'd say it was worth it.

Yep down to PdC

Down to Black and bugger all to do with PdC in any way in fact if PdC had stayed the overspend would have only got bigger.
AB is the only one to thank for having less debt

I know that, just pointing out that it's worked out ok.

Yep down to PdC

I loved do Canio's reign for the most part, but even I can see that a percentage of our success on the pitch was due to a very large playing budget. Would di Canio have been as successful with the current budget?

You raise a good point.
Given the high turnover of players we had during his reign it could easily be argued that he wouldnt have been so successful with a low budget ( forcing him to keep/use the furst batch of players he bought in )

I have no doubt he would have had some success. How much is the question.
Never really cared for PdC but cant argue with the results tho

Big bad Paolo....blah blah blah.

He managed the team not the finances....he came here on the promise of success if he had money to spend.
When i last looked it seems he kept to his word.

Not exactly true though is it. He was given a budget and went over, threw his toys out the pram and threatened to quit if he didn't get his own way

Not sure why Cooper is bothering to make a statement like that particularly when during his time as assistant and then manager Rooney has not exactly been picked to play very often, it seems like a statement to appease Rooney fans (of which I'm one) to accept letting him go (or getting rid?).
Also as touched on before it seems that although it was clear Paolo was insistant on getting what he wanted, that because of both his profile and the fact the club had wealthy benefactors we were always going to be paying over the odds.
