Title: Best album of 2013
Post by: wiggy on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, 17:05:08
This is the time of year that all the magazines and newspapers will be publishing lists of best albums etc, and I tend to have a listen to stuff on the lists to see what I have been missing out on.

So what do the TEF recommend?

I nominate Earth Rocker by Clutch as the best album of 2013.

Have to say the Miles Kane album is a good shout. Wasn't overly impressed with his first album but the latest one is great. I also love the Passenger album, but that's likely to split opinion.

No Blues - Los Campesinos
Pure Heroin - Lorde
The Bones of What you Believe - Chvrches
Life after Defo - Deptford Goth
Overgrown - James Blake
Pedestrian Verse - Frightened Rabbit
Yeezus - Kanye West
Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend
Waiting for Something to Happen - Veronica Falls

Was thinking this had been a bit of a weak year for music (though more likely reason being because I've not paid as much attention to new music as usual), but a quick flick through to put that lists together have proven me wrong.

David Bowie - The Next Day

I can't decide if the Manics album deserves a mention or not.

Oh, good thread this. I've not come across much good music this year, although that may say more about music than me. I'll look up a fair few in here.

For myself off the top of my head, Opposites or Tape Deck Heart were decent albums, neither spectacular though. The 1975 wasn't too bad either.

Oh, and I can I nominate Stereophonic's Graffiti on the Train for the "best three songs of an album followed by a screeching crash and a forgettable album track splurge in the middle and at the end of the Year"

Second place for Franz Ferdinand.

Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe

The 1975 wasn't too bad either.

I very much liked their early work on the EPs they had released but the debut album seems to have written with commercial radio stations in mind, in a very pop orientated bland way.

Disclosure - Settle
James Blake - Overgrown
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

What I've heard of Jake Bugg is very good, also love the Foals single My Number but found the album a bit heavy. The Daft Punk one was a massive letdown, and although I like the beats on Yeezus I've not listened to it more than twice for some reason - he is quite off-putting.

Worst album goes to Benga's Chapter 2, probably one of the worst album I've ever heard, especially when you consider how good and groundbreaking his first was. Absolute shocker.

Really looking forward to the new album from SBTRKT in 2014, and also have high hopes for Julio Bashmore's first album.

A tad mainstream, maybe, but London Grammar - If You Wait & The 1975 - The 1975 are way out there for me.

Nice I'll check that out, thanks.

If you were a Carter Fan check out Fruitbats band Abdoujaparov too a bit more "Punky" than Jims stuff although Fruity is a lazy bastard and only released a couple of albums since Carter, Jim has done at least 8 and written 3 novels and a book about Carter.
Also Carter are playing Bearded Theory Festival next year.

Holy Fire - Foals, AM - Arctic Monkeys and Don't Forget Who You Are - Miles Kane

Agree with Foals & Kane.

Don't think AM is anywhere near album of the year. They've gone downhill, even though AM is fantastic it's not anywhere close to their older stuff. Their concerts aren't as good anymore, either - Although still very good, if that makes any sense at all...
