Title: Personalised Number Plates Post by: walrus on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 08:51:21 Vanity or investment? I've ordered a car for March '14 (wanted sooner, but can't have due to build delays) and I've become obsessed with the various personalised plates I see on my morning commute. Direct from the DVLA, there are some good ones for £250 - £400.
Does anyone have an anecdotes of buying/selling personalised plates, and if they've cost/appreciated in value? Unfortunately, my real name or anything like it is way over budget (except for PA14UUL, which is a bit dubious) so I'm looking at something model-specific. VR5xWOW is available, as is P22VRS, but I'm unlikely to buy the same brand of car next time around so I'd have to sell the plate on. Bizarrely, NE14ABJ is not on the banned list, athough I guess this one is a bit dubious. I asked on Pistonheads and watched as the thread descended into war stories of losing £s and being pulled over for changing the plate format (something I won't be doing), so hoping for more positive stories on here! Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: Bewster on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 08:57:24 IMO they are fine if they hide the age of the car - perfect for some makes as they don't age (Volvo). Initials I think are also acceptable.
Wankerish if they are adapted to some how spell the name of the driver (K8) or what the do for a living or some other personal attribute. BMW X5s with X5 as part of the plate are members of the highest order of wankers. Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: walrus on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 09:08:16 What if it's a brand new X5 with X5 as the number plate? That hides the age of the vehicle and reaffirms the make of the vehicle, so it's a stroke of genius right?

Nope, please refer to my earlier post :D Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: stfc2012 on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 09:22:33 A pet hate of mine. I can never see the point of putting something that vaguely resembles your name on a car if you put the screws in the right position. I see them as making a statement. That statement usually being 'I am a wanker'. I make that statement perfectly well with the clothes that I wear so need to over-do with my motor as well. If you could make some money out of it then great. But unless you pay a lot for it you are unlikely to as you are selling to a very limited number of people. Most motor-heads will know the age of your car regardless, and most others wont give a damn. If it was a business vehicle and was more of a gimmick I'd say go for it. Otherwise, just change your name to the number plate that comes with the car. Done

Used have the spacing illegally (L1 5TFC) and although never got stopped I couldn't be arsed changing the plates MOT time. Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: walrus on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 10:31:05 That'll be obselete coming May when we jump to the Championship....

Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: Barry Scott on Thursday, November 28, 2013, 20:26:59 I don't care for personalised plates, but I also don't hate anyone having one; it's their money. I do like an imaginative one though. Stuck in my head is a navy blue 318i I saw in Woking in 1998, H15EKC. 8)

Title: Re: Personalised Number Plates Post by: Ticker45 on Friday, November 29, 2013, 16:39:56 Always thought that a personalised plate was just asking for the old bill to be nosey and do a quick check to see who owned the car and correspondingly was it taxed and insured.
