Title: Political Music
Post by: Saxondale on Saturday, November 9, 2013, 22:59:43
Because I've been feeling a bit disgruntled and lefty recently.  And because Ive heard journos and commentators of banging on about no political music these days here are a few angry fuck the man anthems from the last few years.

Have I done this before?

Any one else got any?

Purely out of interest, is there such a thing as right wing protest music?  I can't think of any examples myself.  Probably a good thing.

Given the right wing run the show, I can't see why they'd need protest music.

As for right wing ones...no. It's like right wing comedy, it just doesn't happen. Because you kinda need to be disenfranchised to protest.

Not one of my favourite BSP songs but welcoming Eastern Europeans into a pub as a metaphor to be more more accepting of immigration is pretty cool.

Pretty much anything by The King Blues has a political edge, but this one particularly.

Look no further than Swindon's very own Kitchen Sink Dramas, who are worth a listen if appearing in a pub near you.

Here's a worthy example of an anti Thatcher toon.

So most of these posts, kind of confirm Sax's original point that people say there's no political music around atm. Lefties tend to be old buggers....the young too wrapped up in the world of consumerism, and what global capitalism can provide for them.

I'd suggest that us yoof of today have social media to use as a platform to become politically engaged instead

How what works?

You managed to find your way here many years back and sign up and continue posting, social networks can't be too much of a step further for you. I know you're not as old and luddite as you make yourself out to be!

It's a platform through which people can express and debate their opinions, one which didn't exist about 15 years ago. I'm not saying that it's the reason there is less political music around now but I don't think it's fair to say that the younger generation are apolitical either

There's no doubt, that the young write the best music, which  helps define the prevailing zeitgeist. Maybe one day people will eulogise over a facebook campaign to free the Arctic 30, in the same way as they might over Jerry Dammers' free Nelson Mandela.

Have my doubts, mind

No doubt that people are increasingly apathetic towards politics in the UK, not just the younger generations, and that of course will have impacted on the music and wider art scene.

My experience in Norway was that people are generally far more politically engaged, especially the youth (despite Breivik's attempts) yet there's very little political music about
