Not my work (they couldn't give a fuck) but my girlfriends, she works at a nursery, where our two kids also go/will be going within a month. She got a message from one of her mates at work, they've all got to delete parents of kids they look after from their facebook. Which includes my girlfriend. So she has to delete all of her co-workers *and* the parents she's become friendly with. Utter bollocks.

It's called 'safeguarding'.

The nursery are protecting not just themselves but parents, staff and children.

There's no law to it, and they don't have to, it's just advisable.

Its all bollocks, if they had dodgy shit on facebook they wouldn't have been hired in the first place and if they put dodgy shit on facebook they'll be fired anyway so why pre-empt everything!

School is much the same - I knew a few parents before I started working there - no ones said anything to me but I have yo be really careful and have the highest privacy settings on my Facebook/twitter and Instagram accounts.
Working with year 6 means I often get the more media savvy of them trying to add me or look at my pictures!

I think that's just the problem though...what exactly constitutes 'dodgy shit'? The problem is your facebook is your page. It's for your sense of humour, things you find interesting and things that you want to say in your own little area. To reference another social media site it's your 'space' on the internet. What you consider 'dodgy shit' other people won't and stuff you think it quite acceptable others will think id dodgy. If you don't like someones view on politics or a joke they posted you can always click delete/unfollow. It's very difficult to sensor people and try to tell them what they should think is funny, etc. so the nursery obviously sees this as an alternative.

The real problem is that the general public are fucking idiots and the morons that are out there in their masses could never be able to appreciate that if Person A says something controversial on social media, it has absolutely fuck all to do with the company they work for.

Reasonable and non moronic people understand this and if they've added someone they know through a situation like this says something they consider to be out of order and they feel strongly about it, they'd exercise their right to click delete/unfollow. Idiots and morons would want that person sacked from their place of work that they take their custom to.

The nursery is basically trying to completely wash their hands of situations like these and I can understand why.

I understand it to some degree, it's all about protecting reputations really. For his sake, I hope tans' employer doesn't monitor social media...

I know exactly what your saying and it does make practical sense to just avoid the situation but id rather they would leave it up to the individual to understand the difference between facebook/internet and real life. If you have any controversial views by all means have a chat to your mates/family about it but dont put it on facebook for the world to see

But the thing is people will be offended by anything these days. Everyone's moral compass is different and it's not black and white between what's right and what's wrong.

Also if a person has a certain view they're unlikely to view it as controversial, because it's their view. I'm sure Glen Hoddle didn't think saying disabled people had done something wrong in a past life was controversial at the moment in time when he said it, which is why he didn't think to keep his gob shut.

Haha one of my year 6 boys that left last year had full on hit puberty bless him - he made me sit next to him on the coach on a school trip and started sniffing my hair and asking what shampoo I used!! I promptly moved!!

Says it all when conkers aren't allowed to be played. Gone are the days where if it's raining, it's tough you get wet. Especially during PE lessons. Now if it's a bit cold, PE is done in the hall.

That conkers thing is a total urban myth surely? And KS2 kids at my school rhave to do PE outside in the rain - I can understand why they would make the little ones do it?

the thing thats really pissed her off is her bosses are making her co-workers delete her as she's technically a parent. She's been working there for over 10 years, 7 of them before our eldest arrived!

As someone has already said, its unlikely that anyone would deliberately post something that will cause offence, but it only takes a teacher/carer/team coach/TA/whatever to post "What a shit day" at the end of a bad day at work, and one parent will take that, rightly or wrongly as a direct slur against their own child and take offence.
Thats the reason people in those positions are advised not to have that direct contact with parents, it just takes away the risk of conflict, and protects the people with those responsibilities
