The game was due to kick-off at 3pm, but Town will now return to the scene of last season' play-off semi-final second leg defeat at the earlier time.

Better for me....I don't miss Boxing Day games...either that or day at mother in laws...

I even went to see Cardiff v Coventry a few years back when Exeter got iced off.

Very good.   :)

But seriously, what is the point to this?  This is a fixture that, traditionally, our fans have travelled to in numbers.  The easiest of the London grounds to get to from Swindon, at least by road.  Why would Brentford want to jeopardise that revenue?  Surely this isn't being televised?

If England have any real ambition of getting further than quarter finals in competitions we should be having a winter break. Xmas and new year football should be scrapped

Humbug!

Go back a few decades (Reg will be able tell you when), and we had football on Christmas Day.

I may now have to get tickets to watch Harlequins at Twickenham as a means of entertaining the in laws.  It's a sad state of affairs.

Agree Ardiles. Pointless! They spend all that time and effort sorting out the fixture computer so people don't have to travel too far. The home club then moves the game to a lunchtime and those wishing to travel still have to get up early anyway.

I've just answered my own question (using, as ever, the excellent STFC Archive at www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk).

On this Day: Dec 25th (http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/OnThisDay.asp?date=25+December)

In the 60 years between 1899 and 1958 (inclusive), we played 34 times on Christmas Day.

  • The first recorded Christmas Day fixture, on Dec 25th 1899, was 2-1 away defeat to Bristol Rovers.
  • The last recorded Christmas Day fixture, on Dec 25th 1958, was (coincidentally) a 2-2 draw away to Brentford

Was it not at the Brentford playoff game that some of our younger fans got pissed up and caused a bit of trouble? Seem to remember it being cited as a reason for a few of our away games being all ticket this season.

If we're still on the local plod's shitlist they might have asked them to move it earlier so there's less drinking time.

As you say though, imagine it will prevent a number of our fans from being able to go.

Making players work over Christmas is more Scrooge than having football over that period.

If England are relying on Swindon players to win the World Cup its fair to say the nations problems run deeper than a couple of weeks on a pointless tour in some Asian territory bolstering shirt sales off

I'd be extremely disappointed to lose the Christmas holiday games. its of no real consequence to the player at our level, provides traditionally large crowds and is a great get away from the family.

I dont give a shit either way. They are good for club fans for the reasons you state but are shit for the players. A winter break is needed whether that be at Xmas or not imo for the benefit of the national team.

Why is a winter break needed? Its shit for the players families, but its part of the job. plenty of people work over xmas.

Do you honestly think the Premier League clubs would send their players home over the break (figuratively speaking, they still have to train)? Or would they be off 'on tour'?

To protect players from fatigue and injury. They would have to train but wouldn't endure the same things that go on in matches. A winter break works for the Germans

Small populations. Neither have the potential to be world beaters.

Of course a winter break is not everything but changes need to be made and I think a winter break is one of them.
Currently our players go into tournaments at the end of long, hard seasons. Many are rushed back from injuries or are not 100% fit.
I cannot see how a mid term break cannot benefit them.

But they wouldn't take a break though would they? The first day of the "winter break" all the PL teams who are the ones you're concerned about would be off on winter tours of America, Asia etc for commercial reasons. They'd end up more knackered if anything.

Never did. Hence why the national team will never do anything for the foreseeable future. I'd limit the number of foreign players at any club too if i could. Another thing that needs to change that won't

And hence why a winter break will be introduced (because the Premier League teams want it) and why there'll be no such rule so that they can all go off on commercial tours and the winter break will be of no value whatever. Other than a financial one to the largely foreign owners of said clubs. Ker-ching!

It wouldn't mean alot to league 1 clubs i suppose. A few players with knocks would benefit but where everyone is playing each other under the same conditions and rules it wouldn't make much impact i think.

If England have any real ambition of getting further than quarter finals in competitions we should be having a winter break. Xmas and new year football should be scrapped

Why are so many people in favour of having even less to do during the dark, shit winter months?

Not saying you're suggesting this Arriba, but people calling for winter breaks or even worse summer football are just basically lining themselves up for weeks or months of boredom. Winter's bad enough with football, without it I'd tear my hair out.

PS I'm not convinced it'd help national team performance anyway.

I thought we tried that many years ago. All that happened was that the top clubs arranged friendlies abroad, which only increases the fixtures pile up.

I was under the impression that this game was all ticket for away fans, but our own ticket office have just confirmed that you can pay cash on the day if you want (although it will cost £2/ticket more).  Did anyone else think it was all ticket as well, or did I just make that bit up in my own head?

Tickets are on sale online at www.eticketing.co.uk/swindontown or on the phone through 08718761993/option 2 and in person at the STFC Store.

They did exactly the same at Sheffield last week. Declared it all ticket and then said you could pay on the day at the last minute. Has been done quite a few times down the years by various clubs too. Not really sure why if I'm honest.

Brentford away has always been a game I've taken the train to in the past.  Does anyone who has driven there before have any parking advice?  Parking in the area seems to be very limited according to this (http://www.footballgroundguide.com/brentford/#Griffin-Park-Brentford-Directions).

Difficult. I parked at the wrong end of Orchard Road. It's a 5-10 minute walk from the ground.

[edit] This was the PO evening game. I'm not sure if bank hols are included in residential parking areas

They are, the PO was a bank holiday Monday.  We parked down a residential road less than 5 mins walk from the ground and didn't have to pay.  We went right off the A315 Brentford High St somewhere round by Grosvenor Road?

That's right, it was the league game I went to, not the PO game.
