All the best sides keep the ball(look after it). As a kid I remember the dominant liverpool sides knocking the ball across the back 4 patiently building play through the team. The opposition tire more easily without the ball. Alot of their running after the ball is wasted energy-pressing without any real chance of getting the ball etc.

 Of course there are times when you need to go long but setting out to wear teams down gradually isn't a bad thing at all. Pass forwards if it's on, if not go sideways or backwards and maintain possession.

I am definitely in the "keep ball" camp and so far I am enjoying this season. Whilst there have been periods of games when we've looked a bit toothless we have to remember that this is a new team, new manager, new playing style - it will get better. And while have Ranger up front it always gives us the opportunity to go a bit more direct.

I was at games when PDC was in charge when we did just aimlessly punt it up field to whoever and it did not work as those players were not as good as the ones we have now. Anybody who shouts “get it forward” when we are not chasing the game is a prize twat.

Like the Liverpool of old, if the opposition do not have the ball, they can't score. I'm happy with the style we play.

No I think he read the Kasim thread, where I first raised this question.

OK I got slagged off by the likes of Tails for suggesting that, the reason why Kasim doesn't score highly in newspaper out of tens, and probably didn't cut it in the Conference, was because he's not your stereotypical English footballer.

Further I suggested that it might not be easy for the McCrory/Power to take the fans with them as this debate is essentially about the heart of English football....where lies a mistrust of slow, slow, quick football.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a number of fans, are getting restless....which of course is quite ridiculous as you can't turn around years of football culture overnight.

I'm hoping this season and those that follow can mirror the Swansea/Martinez story that was on BBC the other month - changing the footballing culture is doable.

Swansea had the advantage of not needing to change English football culture...

I don't remember Ardiles' team getting a hard time, or Hoddles (but Ardiles' team is a better comparison to this in terms of attempted style) and that followed the success we had after several years off long ball stuff under Macari.

I don't think our fans are much different to any other clubs, but I do think football fans in England in general have got a lot better at moaning and whinging if they are not seeing the 1999 version of Man Utd on the pitch every week.  TV coverage probably has a lot to answer for.

Ossie's 90 team was probably the best passing side we've had...at the time Ossie was mocked more at Spurs than here, becasue he believed that corners should mostly be taken short, to retain possession. Something years later that Barca do.

Hoddle's side was a bit different insofar as Glenn wasn't adverse to pinging 40 yard passes...to wingbacks who would get into the box for 2 strikers, fairly quickly. So infact was quite a direct style, but that side could mix it a bit, like  the first PO gola at Wembley.

It helps to develop possession football if it is in the culture, which in England it isn't.  You might argue that the influx of foreigners in the Prem will mean a change, but not really. The reason the Prem football is popular is because lots of fans worldwide like its manic helter skelter...imports have to adjust to this, not the other way round.  There's a place for a Swansea, but if you had 20, the viewing figures would drop right off.

Total bollocks, it's got to be good to watch otherwise why waste two hours of your life, hence I shan't be watching the national side tonight

Winning with style is the best outcome. The hardcore would attend no matter how we play,  but playing nice football is a lot fucking easier on the eye.

Absolutely, that is what makes football great - the variety of playing styles. You need a Pullis's Stoke or Drillo's Norway - but not 20 of them either. And I don't want to watch them myself...

What's the point of promotion if the spectacle is shite? It's like the spoiler sides in the top flight of football, how could anyone enjoy that? We were destined for demotion from the prem, still some of the most enjoyable games I've seen involving town. Not all of them mind  ::)

Obviously I hope we play nice football and get promoted. But promotion is always special, even if we play less entertainingly to do it.

Agree with all of this...even sadly the last sentence...however, if I could watch 20 teams playing like we did at Wolves, I'd be spending a lot more money on football.  It's why I've travelled to a few extra games early on, I love the football we're playing.

Btw, how much of this debate has come out of Cooper's strangely defensive answer to the question about Cox on Tuesday?
