Not having much luck finding a car at the moment. The main issue is that I'm looking for something that I won't need to replace in 6-12 months but is within my meager budget. My daily commute is about 40 miles and consists entirely of country roads.

I'm considering looking at a lease car but not entirely sure what the pros and cons are, does anyone have one? Who with? Is it easier to get finance for a lease as opposed to finance for a car loan or a purchase from a dealer?

Fish bros skoda have a special deal at £250 deposit and £250pm for a fabia. Not sure how long though. There are pros and cons for pcp. Obviously no mot for three years and get a new car if you want. You will never own the car though.

Have you looked at peugeots just add fuel deals? All insurance, tax etc is taken care of in your monthly payment.

What happens about repairs and such? Would I have to return to the dealer or an specified garage?

They come with a three year warranty, so can go to any main dealer.

Obviously things like tyres wouldn't come under the warranty.

Seems decent. I've been looking at Skodas.

Wouldn't touch a Peugeot with your collection of 80s compilations though...

The Fabia vrs is very good diesel car. Obviously not brand new but you will get a lot of car for your money.

I have a Lexus on a lease.  You still have to pay for tyres, brakes, exhaust etc. but most parts are covered by the warranty.  You have to pay for service also, but I pay £25 extra per month over the length of the lease so that services are paid for also.   Your monthly cost will depend on the mileage that you will be doing over the period of the lease.

I have a Seat Ibiza FR, it's a 2 litre diesel, but not too bad on tax and very good on fuel....I drove from Ludgershall to Kings Lynn and back on just under half a tank of fuel.

Seat also do a servicing guarantee for around £9 per month, then when it's due a service, book it in and sorted, I think with that they give you a courtesy car so you're not without transport while your car is being serviced.

Obviously like stated earlier, brand new cars have the added bonus of no MOT for 3 years etc..

Sonic, if it helps. If you are doing less than 12000 miles per year I would go for a petrol car. As the engine won't get warm enough on a short journey.

A diesel engine will get plenty warm enough on a 40 mile commute.

Diesel all the way for me. 600+ miles to a tank.

On the surface of it the Peugeot just add fuel deal looks good, but I haven't looked at the detail and don't know what the T&Cs would be around general servicing and wear & tear.

Most PCP deals assume you won't do more than 10-12k miles a year...so you'll get stung for going over this.

I was in a similar position about 18 months ago. My commute is 40 miles each way. I bought a golf mk V 1.9TDI on a 0% credit card (cost about 6k for a 2008 with 17k miles on the clock) from a dealer.

I average 58 mpg and get 650 miles out of a tank. Insurance is low too.

The beauty of getting it on a 0% credit card is that as long as you always make the minimum payment each month, you can pay it off whenever you like.

I ended up clearing my card in under a year.

Depends if that's 40 miles one way. 20 miles doesn't warrant a diesel in my opinion. A brand new car anyway. If it has been 'run' in that's a different kettle of fish. A new diesel is obviously more to buy but you obviously reap the benefits elsewhere but often sounds like a tractor.

Petrol's are all the way for me.

What's your budget?
Personally I'd never buy a new car again unless money was not an issue for me.

i got a DS3 on a SS scheme through work. Pay about £235 a month and everything is covered as long as its fair wear and tear.
have it for 2 years with 20,000 miles per year.

I've read up on DPF filters and understand the issues with them, however, my commute is across some lovely open country roads where I'll be able to put my foot down a bit. I'll obviously use the car outside of work as well, both short and long distance. Are the petrol engines as economical and cheap tax bands?

My budget outright is about £3.5-4K although I would like to use that to pay the insurance up front.

I take it that PCP is the same as a lease? Where have people leased from/via?

DPF won't be an issue with that kind of mileage, the exhaust will get plenty hot enough.

Generally larger engined petrol cars have higher VED than an equivalent sized diesel engine.

I've never leased a car, but most people who I know that have have done it directly with the dealer/manufacturer.

You can easily get a decent second hand car for £3k.

I know. I just don't want to get something now and replace it after 12-18 months only to buy another used car for a little bit extra than I paid before.

I've not really found anything decent for my budget around here, seems like an awful selection

Go for a common car, vauxhalls or fords are probably the best. You can get some low mileage examples if you're willing to get a car 8 to 10 years old

Nope

Driven a couple of 2011 ones (think they're still the current generation..). They're surprisingly roomy, if a little bit grey and plasticky inside, but then most superminis are. Engines are alright, not going to set your heart aflame with lust, but they're economical and reliable. The auto box is a pile of crap, avoid like the plauge.

Economical, reliable small box for moving 2/3 people about in regularly. That's all you can really say.
