SAM MORSHEAD: 'Don't mock the plastic fans'

PLASTIC fans - an unnecessary and derogatory description of occasional supporters or a very accurate social commentary?

The plastic debate raises its head every big game we have as in the past those who hadnt been to a game in years had as much chance of getting a tickets as those who go regularly. So stopping some regulars going
This has stopped with loyalty points but the plastic argument will still rear its head. Its not only here either, a quick visit to other forms and you will see it happens there in the run up to the big games.

On tuesday the plastic comments were levelled at Chelsea fans, the glory hunting fans that only follow the big Prem teams.
Chelsea werent always a big club - can remember them coming here with bugger all in away support.
Russian billions have increased their fan base.

I have no problem with ppl allegedly supporting a prem team but ffs go support your local club.
Football isnt a tv programme

Ironically, the Chelsea fans in the away section were pretty hardcore as they sold the tickets through their loyalty system (I was on the train with a few of them, some fairly thick necks in evidence).

The plastic Chelsea fans were in our stands. However, they paid £25 a pop for a ticket and probably bought food, a programme and one of those dreadful half and half scarves, probably £40 a pop into our club's coffers. They're welcome to do that any time they like in my opinion...as long as they sit in the Arkells.

A lot of those 50/50 scarves were being sold by cowboy spivs and were unofficial tacky merchandise. So we saw no cash from them.

The club had made the ones on sale at the actual CG. But yeah, there were plenty of cock-er-ney types that appeared from nowhere in Town.

50/50 scarfs. Why? I mean I can almost see the younger fans may want a keepsake given we haven't played Chelsea for a while, and now they are a top 4 club.

But they even had them at the cup game in Leicester a couple of seasons ago. Leicester.

I think it might be a European thing? Lillestrøm produced a scarf for every fixture with the opposition and date on it

The thing is there's obviously a good market for them...despite head-scratching cogitating by most of us on the reasons of why? I would be intrigued by someone who has bought one to give a reason why.

This has to be the worst of the lot though...

Apparently they're quite commonplace in the Premier League these days. Last night was the first time I ever even vaguely considered getting one - I didn't, and would only have bought one from an official vendor, with the badges on etc. Those who bought the unofficial ones are mugs.

If we, by some miracle, made Europe, and I went to a few away games, I'd probably buy one as a souvenir. I have an FC Seoul one from my trip there (not halved though!)

Not so much for Chesterfield in the JPT...

Sam is spot on.

If anyone has any idea as to how we are going to grow the fanbase without attracting a few more occasional fans (or 'plastic' fans, as some call them), I'd like to hear it.  The hostility from a few idiots towards occasional supporters makes no sense to me at all.

Plastic, Bandwagons.

In around the Calne area, we have a lot of these numptys who always slag and take the piss out of Swindon.
One chap (liverpool supporter) last month was abusing all the Swindon fans at work, questioning why we bother, then after the draw was made, this chap spends all the next week begging one of us to get him a ticket and how he supports his local teams.
Over the last 15 years, he's been to 4 Town games, Blackburn, Leicester, Millwall @ Wembley and JPT final.
Quite right, everyone told him where to shove it.

This is type that fucks me off, he has no intention to return.

50/50 scarfs. Why?

If you want a memento of a game these used to be popular years ago - still see em around

Good summary that, plenty of these people have no intention of returning until we draw another big prem team. Dont mistake them for potential town supporters, their not, their Just visitors !
