I agree Vic, the game in 1980 brings back some horrible memories for me too, we could and should have won that cold winters night.

That was a great team...Rowlands, Mayes, McHale, Kamara...and all.

Thought we were going back to Wembley that night..can't remember the drive home.

Really we should have had it won at home.

After that things just went bad...real bad, until the 4th division days !!!

The home game was brilliant, we could and should have won by more than the 2-1 we did win by, 26,000 there on a cold January night with Mayes and Rowland scoring and taking the piss out of mop head Andy Gray a couple of months after his record £1.5m transfer.

Why was it that we felt cheated? Vic doesn't explain. Biased reffing?

Because Emlyn Hughes was a cheating bastard.

But we got the penalty he was complaining about.

The memory is a bit hazy now, but Hughes spent the whole 2 games fouling, holding and body checking, I don't think he even got booked.

If I remember correctly, we conceded a bizarre goal. Hoofed up in the air into the stratosphere and dropped in over the backtracking keeper.

Neil Midgley. A cunt of the highest order who's still at the top of my hate list even after all these years.

If my memory is correct when Mayes came back on after losing a few teeth to Schumacker Bradshaw who should have been sent off for an offence that was worth ten red cards. He was then through but Hughes and Berry sandwiched him just outside the box and got away with it.
In addition the winner from Eves was a fluke. No doubt we were the better side over the 2 games.

Was 12 at the time and was in tears most of the way home on the coach  :cry:

The home match was brilliant...26,000 rammed in...in fact both matches was almost a carbon copy of events in later years v Bolton.

I lost my then girlfriends purse on the town end. Realised on the way out, went back and there it was right by the top of the bog steps, So packed, everyone walked over it.
