McEveley urges Robins fans not to panic

I know, judging from peoples positive reaction to his performance in the Crewe game, that some people will disagree with me on this, but he still looks the least comfortable of the defensive players in the system to me.

He almost sent the Crewe striker through on goal with an under-hit pass to no-one into space last Saturday, which was the closest the passing around defence system came to being undone.

His overlapping does create a lot of space for other players though, in which respect he possibly makes up for his ability on the ball with the possibilities his movement opens up for the better passers in the system.

You're right I disagree, he's look so much more comfortable than Byrne there, and he isn't a midget so can actually compete in the air, I think our defence has looked a lot better with McEveley in it. His left foot ain't bad when he takes corner it's just a shame he can't cross in open play.

Also he has just come back from quite a long injury so he isn't exactly match fit.

Both Shrewsbury goals were defensive errors and JMac wasnt even playing

IMO he is much better than Byrne in the LB position - not seen Smith play there yet so cant comment whether JMac is the best option at that position in the club but he has been solid last couple of games

I wasn't panicking until someone told me not to panic which then made me think there must be something to panic about that I hadn't noticed and now I'm really worried  :(

I've only seen Smith once, he looked pretty tidy at Peterborough. 2nd choice behind Jay IMO.

If only he could cross consistently well he'd be a real threat with his overlapping. I noticed he took some of the set pieces in the gills game.

He doesnt put in a bad set piece to be fair
You are correct in his crossing ability in open play - majority of time preferring to turn back and seek out another player rather than put one in the box

Yeah his left foot set piece deliveries were ok, not quite the low flat whipped delivery but generally decent enough. The number of times last season where jmac was in great crossing positions and just kept over hitting it out of play infuriated me. I guess with cutting back and keeping possession this is better than belting it into the red seats on the Stratton bank.

Agree on keeping possession but you lose impetus on cutting back
No point breaking with pace then going back the way you came allowing the defence to reorganise

Smith looks pretty good at LB from the little I've seen. Certainly more comfortable than Byrne. Might not get forward as much as McEveley though.

It's certainly one of the paradoxes of the latter's game that his crossing from open play is so poor when his set-pieces aren't too bad.

I'm guessing this interview is aimed at the "Get it forward" dribbling mong type.

I sat behind one of these on Saturday, this comment was said out loud 20 times in the first 30-35 mins and then not once after that.

I've noticed the fans who tend to shout 'get it forward!' when our players have the audacity to try to keep the ball in an exchange of three or more passes around the defence moan with just as much veracity when we lump the ball forward 'keep the ball!' and 'get it on the deck!'

Ain't that the fucking truth, from some right twats.  Happened inside 2 mins on Saturday. :doh:  I didn't see the bloke, but he sounded older than me, so he must've fucking hated it under Ardiles and Hoddle.
