Title: What is the Confederations Cup?
Post by: kerry red on Thursday, June 27, 2013, 18:50:46
Not bothered watching any of it, but just what is the competition all about?

Are countries invited to take part or have to qualify?

Or is it just a bunch of glorified friendlies

Had it down as a nothing tournament, but saw one of the best games for ages last week, Italy v Japan.

Winners of the 6 FIFA competitions. World Cup, euros, concaf etc. Italy because Spain won 2 and they beat them in final. Host of the next World Cup always qualifies as well as a warm up. Been some very good games and teams taking it very seriously with selections.

There have been some really cracking matches. The Italy v Japan one was the best so far. Japan are going to be a real force in world football soon if they keep on improving like they are.

It's exhibition football, nothing more. There should be no majormsurprise that there's entertainment on show as they know that 'it's only the Confederations Cup'.

:)

Brazil vs Italy was a cracker too.

Not sure that it's viewed that way in other countries?

It's another free junket for the FIFA executive.

Probably not. I remain cynical in relation to its importance and relevance in world football though.

...and I don't think it's because I'm a bitter, ignorant Englishman either :)

It's main purpose seems to be to give the infrastructure and stadiums a once over in the country hosting the WC the following year.

The way Brazil celebrated getting to the final would indicate they are quite keen on winning it as well.

I can remember Hoddle's England side getting quite excited about winning some glass ball thing in France (Le tournoi?) in their preparations for hosting the world cup as well.

I don't remember anyone else giving a flying fuck mind.

I went to the England v Brazil match in that tournament.  Brazil won 3-1 (some young lad called Ronaldo scored).  Graeme Le Saux scored a volley from outside of the area, and England lifted the trophy after the game.

True story.
