Title: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: fatbasher on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 17:50:26 Ok chaps and chapesses
We have decided that we will book ten to fourteen days holiday at the end of August. I know it's going to cost me one way or another as it is cane the family time. We have in the past Been going to Cyprus and made our own arrangements. For various reasons we do not wish to go back to our old stomping ground though we have not ruled out Cyprus per see. We have a nine year old who needs entertaining and kids clubs would be a bonus though not essential as he makes "friends" easily. S/C, B&B or All Inc would be our choice as would a private rent. Any sensible help would be welcome. Regards Mr & Mrs Fatbasher Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 17:51:43 Norway.

Hope that helps. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: fatbasher on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 18:20:50 I should have known that a little sunshine would bring out dork answers.

Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: Reg Smeeton on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 18:44:34 How about planning to drive an old London bus to the south of France, but ending up in Greece? Oh and you could pick up Una Stubbs on the way.

Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 19:11:09 Refer you to the last sentence... "Regards Mr & Mrs Fatbasher"what's that got to do with anything? Norway is great. You can get a beer for as little as £6 in Oslo. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: cheltred69 on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 19:15:39 Surely a lot depends on what you want to do with your time. Beaches? Activities? Lively or quieter? etc.
When my kids were younger we always went outside UK because of the weather being so unpredictable here. Favourite destinations included Algarve, Costa Brava and Greek Islands. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: carbonwhite on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 19:33:33 Montpellier, south of France.

Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: Nomoreheroes on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 19:39:19 La Vendee - Just north of the South of France. We used to always go down there, but its quite popular and gets booked up early.

When I first left the country, you were only allowed to take £50 tops with you, so screwed was the post war economy. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: joteddyred on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 20:23:47 We're going to Turkey this year. Previously have been with the kids (9 and 5) to Lanzarote, Tenerife, Majorca and Ibiza. All good family destinations and similar in price. We tend to go All Inclusive as it generally works out cheaper when you factor in the cost of food, drink and ice creams.
End of August will be very expensive, as you'll have missed the free child prices. I tend to book flights and hotel independently as it woeks out cheaper than a package. This year it was over £1k cheaper than if I'd booked as a package with Thomas Cook even with a free child price. I always have a read of reviews on Trip Advisor before booking and have found the hotels to be pretty much as reviewed. Obviously if everyone says it's dirty and the food is vile, then it probably is and I wouldn't risk it however nice the pictures look. If there's only a few negative reports and the rest are good, it generally means the moaners would find something to complain about wherever they went. That's pretty much what I'm experiencing price wise and even independently things are really expensive. I will keep looking and may just end up going into a travel agents the week before and or spend that week end glued to my iPad for a last minute deals. I will keep looking and may just end up going into a travel agents the week before and or spend that week end glued to my iPad for a last minute deals. I booked ours back in January, so the flights were still quite reasonable. Of course as they fill up, the prices go up. My brother in law and famiky always go in August and only book it a week or two in advance. Some years he's had a bargain, other years he hasn't. If you leave your options open you should get something. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: Honkytonk on Sunday, June 2, 2013, 22:16:39 Germany? No I'm not joking, it's honestly a great place to go on holiday. Seriously. mosel valley is not that far to drive, very beautiful, tons of history (Roman primarily), and plenty of wineries.
Camp-style holidays have never been my bag, but I'm sure there are tons of them around. Just make sure you don't book a nudie one, they're quite popular in Germany... Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Monday, June 3, 2013, 00:08:29 I'm going to Magaluf if it helps?

Just make sure you don't book a nudie one, they're quite popular in Germany... I wasn't that keen either til we went to one. And if you have kids they're fantastic. Would have gone again this year but Italy's May weather was too much of a gamble, so we rented a villa in the Canary Islands instead. Funny enough when we were looking for places to go I was telling my wife about how nice Germany looked, but again in May it was a no go. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: DMR on Monday, June 3, 2013, 08:56:29 Go to the Algarve.
Hardly inspired but you know what you're getting - beaches, weather, entertainment and welcoming locals. The Portuguese are great hosts. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, June 3, 2013, 09:47:33 What about Egypt? My sister and her young kids went last year to Sharm-el-Sheikh and had a great time, so much so they are going back this year.

Anybody know how much a Gram of charlie and an average whore house is out that way? Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: pauld on Monday, June 3, 2013, 11:51:52 We're going to Turkey this year. We tend to go All Inclusive as it generally works out cheaper when you factor in the cost of food, drink and ice creams. FWIW, if you do go down this route, steer clear of booking via TravelRepublic - prices are good, but if you have a problem (like they sold you a room they didn't actually have to sell, as happened to us) they don't want to know and just hide behind the "Not our problem, it was our suppliers and we've passed your message on to them" and then surprise, surprise, the suppliers don't reply etc etc. Still getting the run-around from their "customer services" dept (fobbing off complaints dept) 9 months after first complaining. Title: Re: Summer Holiday Ideas Post by: fatbasher on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, 23:00:42 Just had a quote from the Capo Bay Hotel in Protaras Cyprus for b&b (2 adults, 1 child) 14 nights. no prizes for guessing.
Fcuk it I'll tell you @ .84p per euro ish....£4,066. Flights with Cyprus Airways (we've used them many times in the past) circa £1500. Thats before we dip our hands in our pockets for the usual. No wonder the Euro countries are screaming blue murder. Ourgate looks like a good destination this year.... |
