Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:17:23 this applies to the following...
sean o'hanlon- really a very average defender, by no means the best outside the premiership ffs, he's in charge of a shocking defence and that says it all jamie cureton- tries hard but the bloke can't hit a barn door, his holdup play is weak at best, he's certainly not as quick as he was and that's his main weapon down the crapper tony thorpe- simply doesn't do anything, just stands there like a lemon, no effort at all until he got booed rhys evans- you are allowed to dive if needs be dearest Title: overrated players Post by: Tails on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:19:05 I think thats a bit harsh on Cureton and Thorpe mate, but each to their own...
Title: overrated players Post by: Piemonte on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:28:31 Both Thorpe and Cureton will benifit from playing alonside Fallon. They cant really play together.
Its fair to say King was talking absolute bollocks when he said Sean-O "was the best defender outside the premiership" That said he may have just being trying to talk up his value in view of the Cardiff interest. Title: overrated players Post by: Tails on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:29:42 Might have been for confidence.
Title: overrated players Post by: Kinky Tom on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:41:05 Re. Sean O'.
He's a good defender, but if we could put Branston and that no. 5 from Barnsley together he wouldn't get into the team. Certainly not one of the best in this division, but there are a lot worse. Title: overrated players Post by: Johno on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:41:48 on there day, ifil and o hanlon are probably two of the best defenders in this league...just never happens that often!
Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:42:57 "on their day" counts for fuck all i'm afraid, by the time their day fucking comes we'll be down
Title: overrated players Post by: Johno on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:44:33 2 games dave, only 2 games gone. and i think your being too optimistic!
Title: overrated players Post by: Turbo on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:45:06 Tony Thorpe apparantly is very "Either brilliant or crap" according to some city fans.
O'Hanlon was one of the best all last season. Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:50:58 i'd hardly call them well paid proffessionals on that performance either
how dare i expect a bit of committment? Title: overrated players Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:52:28 you said cureton tries hard, is that not commitment?
rhys had no chance for any of the goals thorpe i agree with seano - you're right but he's still our best defender Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:54:20 Quote from: "sonicyouth" you said cureton tries hard, is that not commitment? not really, he tried hard to create something with the ball but wasn't fucked about getting it back when he lost it (which was rather often) you basically accepted everything else i said so why did you fucking blast it Title: overrated players Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 22:58:51 because your expectations are far too high for a team of players who haven't played much with each other yet, they need time to gel - especially cos we had a pointless pre-season
Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 23:08:02 ooh i was discussing this earlier
i don't buy this 'gel' theory for two reasons 1. you don't need to 'gel' to be able to control/tackle/pass/run/shoot straight but this was beyond many of our lot 2. oldham signed more players than us and they played some very neat stuff Title: overrated players Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 23:09:54 erm...you're right on both accounts
maybe i'm just making excuses because i want to be optimistic Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 23:10:37 fucking hell i've never done that before
Title: overrated players Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 23:11:04 probably that pre match carling it certainly didn't taste right
Title: overrated players Post by: DV on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 07:29:26 O'Hanlon was awful......Reeves is the way forward...
Thorpe & Cureton didnt look much kop, but for 75 minutes we were exactly playing to their strengths HOOF!! Title: overrated players Post by: le god cuervo on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 08:24:42 am i the only one who wasn't impressed with gareth whalley either? every time he got the ball (which wasnt often as it was always flying over his head!) he gave it away. kept dwelling on the ball too long & getting tackled.
to be fair our whole team looked a yard off the pace compared to oldham. is this the result of a shit pre-season against mediocre opposition? the biggest disappointment was that it took king nearly 80 minutes to realise we were 3-0 down & he had 2 wingers on the bench! they should have been on soooo much earlier! both added a new dimention to the team, we stopped hoofing it & started getting it wide. i'm looking forward to seeing what team we put out agianst forest. hopefully fallon, roberts (best player last night), shakes & nicolau will all start. on a plus side i thought jack smith played well. Title: overrated players Post by: janaage on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 08:31:26 Le God, I agree for someone who was worth £625k a couple of seasons ago he's started poorly. Under no pressure he passed directly to Oldham on 4 seperate occasions.
When are the players/management gonna learn that passing from the back is the way forward, hoofball doesn't work. Ifil and Collins especially constantly knocking the ball down the channels is giving possession away. When Reeves came on and passed it we looked a much better side. Keep it on the fucking deck lads and we'll be alright!! Don't panic!!! Title: overrated players Post by: yeo on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 08:49:37 :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:
I love you Dave FACT! Title: overrated players Post by: walrus on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 10:41:58 Let's look at the bright side! Once O'Hanlon, Nicholas and Pook( ? ) came off we looked a transformed team. We played some superbly neat stuff and looked better than Oldham had all game. Thorpe's finish was inch perfect, and Nicholau with both assists looked a real threat.
Evans does look poor and think should have had a better effort at both the corner and freekick. The goal from the corner was a touch embarrassing with it sliding underneath him, although by all accounts the player should have been marked. I've been very impressed with Cureton and Thorpe so far, but like some have said, don't seem to compliment each other. With Fallon back on Saturday that should change things, but as King says we still need to be up for the second balls. The result is a touch poor, but the performance at the end demonstrated we have a team to go places. If only we could fucking strengthen, and get in - as DV85 said last night - 2 central defenders, a defensive holding midfield player and if possible, a backup goalkeeper to push, and challenge Rhys' place. Title: overrated players Post by: larwood on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 11:04:45 Quote We played some superbly neat stuff and looked better than Oldham had all game. But by the time we started to play oldham were three nil up and coasting,we had nothing to lose and went for it.I agree that we should'nt get too down hearted just yet,but the start to the season we've had has been a bit predictable[i.e conceding goals] ,i still think we can score but the defence seems to make mistakes that always cost us, just like last season. |
