Title: Just One Game
Post by: kerry red on Monday, May 13, 2013, 18:47:14
You've been handed a one-off jaunt in the Tardis to revist a game - which one do you choose?

Maybe a combination of a cracking day out plus the game or just the game itself.

Birmingham 4 Swindon 6 my choice - a great combination of game/day out

Hard to disagree with that one.

Outside of Swindon, when I was living in Newcastle I had a ticket for the 4-4 draw with Arsenal (Arsenal 4-0 up) in the ol' online shopping basket but the missus convinced me not to go. I would have loved to have been a neutral at that one.

Hard to disagree with that one.

Tough one between that and the '69 final. The '69 final means more really, but I and my peers weren't born then and so nobody to reminisce with

Liverpool 2 Swindon 2...Premiership season.

We passed them off the pitch and the atmosphere was electric.

In truth lots to chose from.

From the games I was at:
Swindon 2 Man U 2. This one had it all; Cantona sent off, Nijholt's huge deflection going over Schmeichel, Hughes getting walloped by someone in the Shrivvy Road, the early goal for Man U (I remember the MOTD commentator saying "There's the first" on the highlights later), the fifteen miscues in the build up to the second and the "We should've beaten 'em" celebrations afterwards. We went into it after being butchered 7-1 at Newcastle, United came to use after doing Wednesday 5-0 so everyone thought they might get double figures. It never seems to work out that way...

From the games I wasn't:
League cup final '69. Seeing Swindon lift a major trophy after beating a football giant at Wembley would be beyond awesome. I can't see the chance ever coming again.

One that I was actually at? Charlton away playoff semi

One that I wasn't at (oweing to being 21 years away from birth) would have to be the '69 cup final.

Stoke 1 Swindon 1 1990
We were in the playoffs , they were relegated - they took the lead we equalised from kickoff and it all kicked off in the stand as Stoke fans in seats above us
On the way to the game we found a huge pub that fired up the BBQ, place was full of town fans
Sun was blazing

Could quite easily redo that day

And, if I remember, a not so pleasant pitch invasion by Stoke at the end

Swindon 2 Chelsea 3 (I think) Jimmy Allen's testimonial 1986.

I'd ask my dad to drive home via Carterton so I could see my nan and grandad, in fact we might even leave at half time. Would be nice that.

First game was in the 94/95 season...I'd like to go back to the Leeds 0-3 Swindon game I was at, and the game I wish I could have seen was the 69 league cup final against Arsenal!

Has to be the smoke bomb game against the Scum. They were going for promotion, we were going for relegation. Very tense crowd and we score at the TE when nobody could see a thing. Cue enraged Scummers and a good old fashioned barney on the Magic. They don't do atmospheres like that anymore. We got relegated, they didn't get promoted.
I also nominate the Tranmere play off game for pure tension, relief and sportsmanship from the Trannies. Superb suppot from us.
For one game I didn't attend then it has to be the Arse at Wembley in 69.

Leicester Wembley final, The whole day was brilliant.

I'd beg to differ about the few minutes after Leicester's third goal went in being brilliant.  Utter disbelief and stunned silence broken only by a small boy in front of me sobbing uncontrollably is how I'd describe it!

The rest definitely brilliant and this would be my game as well. On the day I missed Maskell's goal as hadn't got back from half time and covered my eyes for the penalty.   I'm not sure I'll ever get the same level of emotion I did when the final whistle went.

for me too it has to be Wembley in '93.

As others have said the whole day was amazing. From the arranged coach in Burford to the return coach going through Oxford city centre celebrating. was fooking class.

The noise as Maskell's shot went in off the post will stay with me forever

Games I've been to would have to be Charlton in the play-offs or Accrington away in the league 2 season, was a mental day and stayed up there - messy and cheap as fuck. E3 E3 E3 E3!

Games I didn't go too; Wembley '69, or '93.

Swindon 4 Leicester 3, which I was not at.

If i could go back and change something about 1 game i was at, it would be the Simod Cup semi Final at Luton in 88, so i could tell Dave Bamber not to play to the whistle (from the crowd) when the score was 1-1.

But for just going to one game, has to be the league cup final in 69, the only game i haven't seen us play at Wembley.

Games I wasn't at-

Wembley '69 OR
Birmingham 4 Swindon 6

Games I was at-

Wembley 93 OR
Away at Charlton- Play off semi second leg OR
Away at Brentford Play Off semi second leg 2013. (A shit first half for sure but the emotion and reaction on the terrace when Aiden Flint pulled it back to 3-3. Fucking marvelous).

Wembley '69 Obviously would have been great to have been at.

Would also add to those that have been mentioned Beating Roma 4-0 in the Anglo-Italian Cup Winners Cup the following year would have been one I'd like to have seen.

Of matches I've attended, Man U at home in the PL and the second leg of the Charlton playoff tie stand out as ones I'd like to revisit.
