Spot on.  If they want their own anthem played, they should be plying their trade in the Welsh league.

I read last week that Wrexham had a helping hand, when the Welsh FA decided not to ban one of their players despite being sent off for violent conduct in the last league game, deciding that the sending off 'was a just punishment', and the player not banned for 3 games.

If the Welsh clubs want to play in the English league, they should have to come under the FA, the English one.

Was nicked that day along with 1 or 2 others. Always an interesting place to go. The natives are distinctly unfriendly. South Wales is locked in a 70's hoolie timewarp.

I'm glad Newport have made it back...bit of a derby fixture for us. I've been down to the athletics stadium that they used before Rodney Parade, a few times, and was always impressed with the memorabilia of their days in Europe, and other stuff.

Of course, when they first went out of the league, they had to fight the notorious Alun Evans, dictator of the League of Wales.  Their position was that Newport had to play in Wales, Newport's position was the wanted to play in England, in the hope of getting back. So the LoW exiled them, and they had to play firstly at Moreton in Marsh, and later Gloucester. Eventually they won a Court case to allow them to play back in Newport.

Many people appreciate the National Anthem.....i have never understood why the Welsh our in our League's....surely a case for the Scots to go to Europe and demanding they be allowed in :D

As for Newport fans......lets hope there grandfathers who paid the ultimate price fighting for the BRITISH flag are looking down and thinking.....what a bunch of silly pricks they are....like Aldershot they wont last long.

That said it has been an impresive performance this season making it back....so that should be applauded.

Simply for historical reasons. The Welsh didn't have their own league for years, so they played in the English league, whilst no Scottish teams have played in the English system.

Anyway, who does want to play Total Network Solutions?

What a load of shit. Who says they want the welsh anthem played? Do you really expect the welsh, the Newport fans especially to sit and respect the anthem of their close neighbours? Like DMR says who cares about the shite song anyway?

Says more about the football authorities for deciding to play it to a welsh audience.

If they don't like a song they have to resign from the league? Seems a little bit of an over reaction to me.

Glad to see them back and happy Cardiff are back in the top flight too, should spice things up next season.

The oddity here is that God Save the Queen is the national anthem of UK & NI.  England doesn't have an official one.  This is the bit that always confuses me, suggesting a desire to be independent of the UK, in which case I would support the case of teams therefore not playing in the English league if they feel that strongly.
I've never really got my head around the England cricket team either, where the Wales bit is constantly dropped from the title - I'd be a bit miffed if I was from Wales because I presume (and could be wrong) they wouldn't really associate themselves with the Enland cricket team.

I went to watch Wales v Argentina a few years back when England were playing in Holland or Belgium. At half time the scores were read out and England were losing, there was a big cheer and a few comments around me. Veron scored in the second half, I jumped up and cheered - be rude not to.

Fucking hell, 'Wales' hasn't existed as a real country, separate from England, for nearly 500 years officially. Owan Glyndwr was the last man to lead a seperate Wales, and that was in the early part of the 15th century for christs sake. The Welsh 'celtic' identity is just a mish mash of other cultures they've cobbled together to sell to tourists.

What would the national anthem be if not the British one? Bread of Heaven?

I should add I like the Welsh, lived in Swansea for years. Just seems a bit thick. Then again, Newport is Newport...

Actually I think it's probably a lot longer than that. Late 13th century I think. But in that case you have to also admit that in the same way England hasn't existed as a country since the act of the union in the early 18th century.

And for an Englishman to moan about another nations culture being a "mish mash of other cultures ... cobbled together" is perhaps the most ironic thing I've ever read. England  - The language has French / Latin / Germanic and Norse roots, the exact proportions of which vary from region to region. The patron saint is Greek / Palestinian, the motto is French, the flag borrowed from the crusaders and / or that adopted patron saint. There's a definite pot / kettle thing going on here.

I did mention 'officially', dating it back to the Laws in Wales act (1536? Something like that? on my phone so can't be arsed to look it up on wiki).

And as far as the mish-mash comment goes, I was referring more to their penchant for copying gaelic/celtic cultural ideas to sell to tourists, as opposed to not having  a 'Welsh' cultural identity to call their own. Which they do, and it's lovely.
