Title: BBQ's Gas or Charcoal?
Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, April 25, 2013, 08:09:20
As the title says really, looking at getting a BBQ this weekend and cant decide between the two options.

Also, if I was to go for Gas, where in Swindon supply gas and how much for?

Gas BBQ's are for pussies. Might aswell use the grill of a cooker. Get a real one.

We have had both down the years, but currently have a charcoal one.

I don't think it makes as much of a differencve to flavour as some claim - most of the flavour is imparted from marinades etc.

The beneift of gas ones for me is that you can get much bigger ones cheaper with hotplates/griddles on them, which are good for homemede burgers that might fall apart a bit, and being able to do fried eggs if you are making breakfast on it.

Charcoal. Gas isn't a proper BBQ.

Gas. Yes it's outdoor grilling and so not the same. But I use the gas BBQ so much compared to the old charcoal one.

There is a calor gas place up on gypsy lane. Can't help with cost depends on size and type, the first one is always fairly expensive due to the deposit needed on the canister. From then on in its refills. Only issue is this place is only open Mon to Fri.

Gas.

You can get bottles from Sleemans on Swindon Road, just up from the New Inn.

Charcoal.

Gas just doesn't have the proper barbecue flavour for me.

Gas isn't a real BBQ

Charcoal.

Nothing beats the feeling of making fire, singeing your arm hairs and burning your food.  :)

Charcoal.

Nice cold beer while trying to get the fire going. Yes it's more hassle, but its more manly. Gas is for wimps. You can't beat the smell from a charcoal bbq.

Gas BBQ's are like the vegetarian versions of meat items. Trying to match the original but failing.  Quorn burgers, veggie bacon etc. Just not anywhere near as good.

If you have a BBQ in a forest or some such place....then the charcoal should be supplemented by cones and so on that can be found around. Having a camping stove, to keep things warm part cook sausages etc, make a brew, is acceptable.

If you're in the garden though...might just as well use the kitchen.

Charcoal. The whole point of BBQ-ing is the process of building and setting a fire and using it to cook slabs of meat...

Hmmm, you guys have a point on the Charcoal BBQ. Think I will just go and get one and see what I fancy at the time. Asda have some cool looking American style charcoal ones.

If that's the budget then maybe charcoal is the way forward. Tried "cheaper" gas ones before but without being impressed. Maybe we just got unlucky.

£100 in charcoal BBQ is not insignificant!

This. Anyone who considers using gas, may as well come out of the closet at the same time.

I got given one of these (http://www.outbackdirect.co.uk/outback-spectrum-flat-bed-2-burner-gas-bbq-grill-with-cover.html) a couple of years ago.

Does the job for me.

Exactly. if you need to ask the question, you might as well sign up to Stonewall. Why the fuck would anyone want an outdoor cooker.
