Not the way I understood the phrase, I've only heard it as a general term for "thick bastard" tbh. If it does have it's origins in taking the piss out of the disabled then I wish I hadn't used it, but it certainly wasn't what I meant.

I'm with you Paul, I have never linked Window lickers with the disabled and the fact that Red Socks has taken offence to it says more about him more than anything else.  For me Windows Lickers equated to unique people who need to get out more like the stereotypical train spotter wearing his kagool.  In fact I don't see how you have managed to equate Window Lickers to the disabled.

Just my opinion of course.  Maybe it's a generation thing.

For me, window licker is less insulting than 'spastic', but still pretty horrible.

I always though it was for somebody that's a bit thick, like red socks.

The same phrases or words being said or typed can mean different things despite being identical. The problem with the internet that often the true meaning of what someone types gets blown out of proportion.

This is because I've never actually heard anyone, other than other children that know no better, "take the piss out of disabled children". Grown-ups don't tend to do that sort of thing. They tend to just look the other way when they encounter the learning disabled, or over compensate and be incredibly patronising.

Presumably what you find offensive is people using phrases that imply that others have learning disabilities, when they presumably don't. Which poses the question of where you stop. Is moron acceptable? What about idiot or imbecile? All were words for those with mental handicaps / learning disabilities, but have been absorbed into the language as insults to be directed at people behaving stupidly. What about retard? Or is that still too recent?

Do you feel the same way about the use of language relating to mental illness? Are you going to get similarly outraged every time someone calls someone else a nutter, a loon, etc. ?

Could you post a list of acceptable insults and the contexts that are appropriate for their use for us all? Better be careful to research the etymology of them all though, because someone is bound to pull you up on anything dodgy.

And I'd be bloody careful with every post you make in the next couple of weeks as people will be waiting for you to slip up so that they can pounce and scream hypocrite at you.
