Title: Fanzines
Post by: WR5 on Thursday, March 14, 2013, 16:24:56
I know the internet age pretty much killed the fanzine scene but I have fond memories or Bring The Noise, The 69er and the Magic Roundabout.

Anyone from here involved in any zines of the past?, Bring The Noise was responsible for helping shape my music tastes too

I collaborated on a few things for Off The Ball.  OTB was a sort of cross club fanzine, which looked at specific issues affecting all fans, but contributors would highlight particular aspects of their clubs. The serious messages were conveyed by what  later became the typical irreverent humour of the fanzine movement.

The leading lights were Baggies fans...good lads, like all the Baggies fans I've met over the years.

Back in the early 70's there was the daddy of fanzines.. Foul.  I had a load of copies which got lost somewhere in the transient lifestyle I had at the time...I recently acquired a compendium of old Foul articles. Really strange..I recall it being quite funny at the time, but on re-reading the articles, it seemed like something written by a PaulD/Lumps clone...devoid of all humour.

Somewhere in the loft I'm sure I have a stash of 69ers and a copy or two of the other one, was it the Randy Robin or something?

Yep, it was Crystal. Although I did my fair share of selling them and the odd article. Never nice having to shout out about selling the 69er...

I had a couple of articles in the 69er, and managed one in When Saturday Comes as well.  I cringe when I read it now.  So badly written.

If you can't find a copy on eBay, I believe the British Library has a copy of every 69er. Apparently a legal requirement.

When Saturday Comes continues to be a good read even after so many years. What was your article about and when Ardiles. I have quite a few old copies. Might be able to find it somewhere.

Going back a few years when the TEF was a bit more irreverent, I thought there might be some potential to put together a bi-monthly from the weirder bits.

It wouldn't have worked, not for very long anyway, everything is on the internet now so you might as well leave it there.

Did anyone else get the 'survival of the fattest ' books , basically it was a round up of the season from all the fanzines from every club . The ultimate bog read , stopped after about 7 seasons i think .

I contributed to three of them and still have them on my shelf, I showed the missus once, she wasn't impressed.

I contributed to the first 5 seasons, that was about the length of time The 69er ran.  I looked at one the other day: the season McMahon bored us to tears I wrote a chapter of misery.
