Snickers.

Caramel, chocolate, peanuts. What more could you ask for?

It's not a bar but my favourite is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. The miniatures are brilliant also.

My girlfriend got me a box containing 105 of the minis for my birthday, they didn't last very long but wasn't helped by the fact she is equally addicted to them.

Since we're going off topic, I much prefer fruity stuff like Maoam or Starburst to chocolate.

Bloody hell, I opened this thread with two in mind and they're covered within the first three posts.  Cadbury's Fruit and Nut is definitely top, but Texan was always my treat of choice as a kid (bought from the vending machine in Hill's Yard at the bottom of Kingshill usually).

My vote would also have been for Cadbury's Fruit and Nut had it not been for the alteration to the size of the fruit and nuts that occurred a few years back from whole hazelnuts to inferior scraps and fragments of almond (an inferior nut in all regards and lacking the counterbalancing effect of the hazelnuts wholesome crunch).

I don't buy their chocolate anymore as there has been a catastrophic deterioration in quality across the board but experiment from time to time with other brands of fruit and nut without success.

I don't buy their chocolate anymore as there has been a catastrophic deterioration in quality across the board but experiment from time to time with other brands of fruit and nut without success.

Cadbury's have had a massive downturn in quality since Kraft took over, has to be said (not saying that it wasn't going on before, but it has accelerated since the yanks turned up). Don't give you that chocolatey hit anymore. Dairy milk is all veg fat now, horrid. Wrote to them about the quality of one particular dairy milk bar I bought (took one bite and stopped), asking how much of it was veg fat ( i.e. palm oil) and how much was actual chocolate/dairy product, and they explained that it was now not company policy to discuss that as it might 'compromise their recipe'. Don't buy their stuff now, aside from the odd Double decker as previously stated.

Nice bit of Lidl Dark chocolate is the business for the price. Co-op's Dark stuff is bloody good too.

Love me a mars ice cream.

Do you not find that Twirl has that harsh/acidic sensation in the back of your throat?  That and the other one that was similar but looked like a cartwheel in cross-section (I'm getting far too involved in this discussion).

Edit: Google tells me it was the Spira

Agreed about nuts and fruit.

We have a shop down here called Montezumas - a family run chocolatier. They do milk, white and dark chocolate buttons which are bigger than a £2 coin and are fabulous. They also do amazing chilli chocolate and an Eton Mess bar.

A refrigerated mars bar

I have to agree.  We had a seemingly limitless supply of liquid nitrogen in the inorganic chemistry laboratory at university.  And over the course of my final year, we undertook a number of vitally important research projects with it...including the submerging of the complete range of commercially available chocolate bars and then carrying out a taste test.

After a rapid freezing (to -196 °C), all of the bars would shatter if dropped from a height of a few inches.  But it was the Mars bar that responded best.  Particularly the caramel layer which was brittle to start with, but would then melt as it warmed up in your mouth.

What's everyone's opinion on Bounties? I always find it very depressing to open a box of Cadbury's Celebrations and find only a sea of them leftover at the bottom, as occurs regularly in our household.

I've always thought of them as kind of like the Marmite of the chocolate world.

Funny you mention Biscuit and raisin Yorkies Lumps as these are my personal favourite. In Ireland Cadbury's do a Tiffin bar which is really good but you can't get it in England unfortunately.

Honorary mentions to Double Decker, Toffee Crisp, Caramac and Boost bars which were always my picks when I dabbled in the chocolate bar section.

Most of my year moved in to something Finance related, I think.  If we were German it would be a different story, but there were very few jobs out there in pharmaceuticals etc., and those that there were were not fantastically well paid.

I used to love Yorkies as a kid, but they're just not the same now, same as Wispa's.

Oh and chocolate in the fridge? You might as well put your red wine in as well you heathens!

That Tiffin bar, which did come out here for a while but seemed to disappear inside 6 months, was pretty much what Country Style used to be, Dairy Milk with biscuit pieces and raisins. It come in gold foil in a red and white gingham sleeve, and was my childhood favourite.

Wholeheartedly agree.

The Mrs loves nothing better than a bar straight from the fridge. Personally I think it absolutely kills the flavour.

Used to love a Yorkie, but I think they must've changed the recipe because they just don't taste the same now as they did 10 years ago.

I don't partake in a chocolate bar too often these days, but I do enjoy a Boost or some Fruit & Nut.

Title: Re: The best chocolate bar is..
Post by: dagrumpymunki on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, 10:08:27
Unfilled slab, particularly dark chocolate needs a good time out of a fridge before you eat it.

Stuff like Mars bars and Snickers much less so. Most of the bar is nougat or caramel anyway, and the chocolate is much lower in cocoa solids so doesn't need the higher temperatures to melt and get edible.

These can be a bit sickly at room temperature and much nicer after refrigeration.

Now we're talking about decent quality chocolate, the Green and Blacks Milk Chocolate with Butterscotch, the Dark with Burnt Toffee, the Dark with Expresso, and the new Milk with Sea Salt are all good.

I'm not trying deliberately to question your Aero-love, but the green bit has always been a disappointment to me.  It tastes more like toothpaste than chocolate and the texture is a let down as well.  It's a green, sugary mess that I'm not sure has anything chocolatey about it at all.

And any chocolate bar whose USP is having bubbles of air (ie tiny pockets of no chocolate at all) pumped in to it gets the thumbs down from me.

Always used to go for the Cadbury's Fudge Bars at newsagents afterschool as they were 10p and good for a small but satisfyingly textured chocolate hit.

I haven't had an actual old style Fudge bar for years and assume now, with the general miniaturisation of confectionery enacted each year by executives trying to squeeze a little more profit out of their products to justify their bonuses, they're probably at least 15p and fit on your fingernail.

Having looked that up I'm going to have to try one, think they sell it in Asda.

I think there's an American shop in the tented market which sells American chocolate and the such (at a huge mark up probably). I'm only really a fan of the peanut butter based stuff.

Buying stuff from multi-nationals with a checkered history of exploitation of child labour and African farmers will always leave a bad taste in my mouth...

Whereas I find oppression and exploitation rather tasty. I like to think you can actually taste the desperation in Nestle products in particular.

You must be right at home using mobile phones which are soaked in the blood of Congolese coltan miners?

Do they match your Nike child slave labour trainers?
