Title: Pre Match in the Legends
Post by: fatbasher on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 07:34:51
To the new Bod. When some of you skulk around the legends lounge looking like you're a gang of east European Nare do wells casing the joint to either burgle or pick pockets, you won't instill any confidence. Get some proper name badges and talk to people!

Thanks.

Name badges? It isn't the first day of primary school.

You've obviously never been to a trade show or seminar or other situation where you are actively encouraged to mingle?

I'd assume the people in suits and STFC ties were the business men.

Not trying to slate the idea. Just thought it funny the chairman walking around the winners lounge with a 'Hi, My name is Jed Mcrory McCoy' badge.

That would be unprofessional. Just Jed McCory would suffice and possibly his title and or the STFC crest.

Sorry but i'd like to slate the idea. It's not a fucking trade show or seminar. It's before a football league match! There's only 4 of them. I would hazard a guess that if you're that fussed, you'll already know who they are and if you don't you probably ain't that bothered anyway.

Unless you wore a name badge of course, then i may change my opinion. Although that would be a tad odd.

I think it's a great idea and to make it a bit easier, here's one they can just print out and use before the next home game

I appologise unresevedly for merely making a suggestion that may or may not  be a help to those of us who thought they knew who they were but were not entirely sure.

I also undertake to never making again a reasonable comment that could be misconstrude by anyone who clearly knows better and who has better ideas.

I did wonder who that group with Jed was. Saw Steve Murrall down there later too but only briefly.

Anyone have any idea yet who the guy with the dreadlocks is ? Saw him rushing into the ground at about 7:15 pm with his official club tie being tied while running along.

Did he look a bit like JFH?

Serious question......because Jed says his best mate is the spitting image of JFH i could have been him.

I had quite a long chat to Jed last night in the hospitably suite and one of his "massive" Tommy I think he said his name was.
Both assured me that the money is there but they don't want to piss it up the wall and be in the same situation again in 3 years time.

I have to be honest a say yes they both sounded very sincere if both a little "Del Boy"

They are obviously all football fans, and have the hearts are in the right place whether that turns out to be a good thing or a bad thing only time will tell. My instinct they are here for the club not themselves.

I was standing next to Steve Murrall last night whilst he was talking to a couple of the sponsors (well, some geezers in suits anyway), and couldn't help overhearing. They were talking about the search for a manager and Murrall was telling them the problem is that whoever they choose they won't please the whole of the fanbase, there's always going to be someone pissed off, fair comment I thought.

He also said they'd already been approached by plenty of managers, some of them "very very impressive", but hadn't started interviewing yet. I guess 'impressive' depends on how low they've set the bar for themselves - Keith Chegwin would be impressive compared to someone like Malpas. Unfortunately he wasn't at liberty to divulge any names, spoilsport.

Oh, and the man has the most insincere, cringeworthy laugh in the history of mankind. It was exactly the sort of laugh you'd get if you told your worst joke to a car salesman.

As far as I know he is just a friend of McCrory and has no involvement with the running of the club. His favourite cheese remains undisclosed, which I guess is no surprise.

And on that subject, do you get why it's important that the "anonymous" backers do come out in public? I appreciate you've asked the question and that's all you can do, but you're also in a position to explain to the owners why, especially given our history, "anonymous backers" is always going to raise possibly unjustified but wholly understandable suspicions.

For what it's worth Paul, yes I do and I have explained fans' concerns, the historical reasons behind them and the need to at least give an indication as to where the money is coming from to appease those worries right now. I can only keep asking and keep digging for now and we'll see what emerges in due course.

That's fair dos, Sam. As I say, I appreciate all you can do is ask (and explain the reasons why). If they choose not to answer not much more you can do, if we then choose to take their silence as evidence that they are in fact lizardmen in people suits, that's their look-out :)

Hopefully it will, as you say, emerge in due course as Arbib and Black did. Thanks for answering!

Looking at some of the shit that was aimed in the direction of Mr Black in the last few weeks though, I can sort of understand the reluctance of anyone that isn't going to have a day to day involvement in the club wanting to keep their names out of the public domain.

Really? It's not like anyone went and painted abusive messages on his driveway, for example. Some people were a bit rude on twitter. It's not that big a deal. Some degree of public interest does come with wanting to be involved in running a football club. As it would with any institution that is of such great concern to so many. And the way to deal with that isn't by hiding, which is only going to raise suspicions.

I think the biggest gripe was his expedited withdrawal of funds at a crucial time of the season. I think he'd still have got stick for it.

And if he'd been a bit more pro-active in managing his investment/staff he put in place to do so, he maybe wouldn't have had to threaten to put the club into admin/liquidation and dump us in the mess we're in now. And perhaps wouldn't have lost his investment.

I'm not that fussed about knowing who the money men are. I can understand why other people are, it's just not a big thing for me.

If it could just be confirmed somehow the money exists and the conditions under which it is invested into us won't screw us over then I'd be placated. Not sure it would be possible to 'prove' there'll be no risk to us whether the source is identified or not mind.

I suppose the FA would have wanted certain guarantees regarding future funding.

He never wanted to be proactive with regards to STFC though - or it seems so from what he's said. As soon as he was forced to do so he tried to look for someone to buy it off him. The fact that no one was willing to until the 11th hour can't completely be his fault.

I can see where you are coming from. But how would you be able to know the money exists and we won't be screwed over if the backers aren't identified?

Don't really know.

But then identifying a rich investor is no guarantee they'll be willing to spend. Or something.

Like most things in life, it's not completely any of the individual participants' fault, they all share some of the blame - Di Canio, Wray, Fitton, Black. But the fact that others are at fault too doesn't absolve Black. Or any of the others. But if we are to believe what we are told it was Black who was willing to put the club into liquidation because it suited him to get out quick when it all got a bit on top because of, ultimately, his failure to manage his investment propelry. I find that a little difficult to contemplate.

And I totally see where you're coming from. The whole saga seems very out of character for a guy who's had as much success in business as he has.

I would tend to give him the benefit of the doubt a bit more as I don't think it was a snap decision - he did his best to flog the club but had that hard out date set and once it approached had to be more aggressive in making the sale.

It's called running a football club. Paolo Di Canio's appointment sure as hell didn't please everyone but it worked, this next appointment is just as important.

mates and business don't work as bertie said; £10 mill down the pan and nobody to get you home when you're hammered - pure speculation on my part of course.

the thing that will unite the fan base is winning. pick someone who will give us the best chance of winning.

Can't win.

Get promoted and you've got PDCs team promoted
Miss out on promotion and you fucked up all the work PDC did to get us there.

True, but Paolo did a lot of that and there were a number of people who were not happy when he was appointed.

The trouble is you won't know how successful the new man will be until after he has been here a while, and for some fans that will be too late

Yep. And unless it's one of the Holy Trinity (Adkins, Tisdale, Hasselbaink) then I could see the crowd getting on the manager's back after a bad result or two. Look at the game yesterday.

P.S. Change your name to Dave.

Coventry reported that they had 40 applicants for their job, so how many managers are there currently unemployed at the moment who would be quite happy to step into PDC's shoes? A fair number I would expect who would like to be gainfully employed.

Going back many moons, even Sir Alex was almost on his bike so who can really tell how a manager is going to pan out? certainly not me. Got to say that whoever we get is on a hiding to nothing.
