Ain't they great?

Tasty, healthy and easy to make. OK, so they aren't really healthy but who gives a shit.

How to make them better though? Anybody have any tips on how to make them crispier and more delicious than they already are?

No but I love the way we had chips in Belgium.....crisply cooked and covered in fried onions, ketchup and the best mayonaise I have ever had, they were awesome.

I think you'll find that's an urban myth. They are one of the healthiest, least fattening foods its possible to find. Anything you hear to the contrary is propaganda put out by the health food maufacturers.

Potato wedges (chips by any other name) with mayo and bbq sauce are the future.

They are magnificent. My local chippie is a particular favourite as their portions are medium (£1.50, enough to feed an elephant for a week) and large (£2.20, enough to solve world hunger).

As for making them yourself, you can nick Heston Blumenthal's method of simmering them in salt water before frying, which works really well but is a bit of a faff.

I bought a Tefal Actifry, which only uses a spoonful of sunflower oil and makes perfect, healthy(ish) chips. I love it.

We recently bought one of these and have done them this way once (we don't often eat chips TBF) and they make great healthier chips. (ok I feel for the food police version of them being unhealthy!)

I got shit bacon for admitting to a bit of "healthy" bacon. Surely Gnasher needs "girly chips" for this!

They are girly chips. My wife makes em (I did peel the potatos once).

The chip shop chips around Bedminster/Southville are too dry, man. Too dry.

Chips are ace. I like mayo to dip them in, the kids go for the smother them in ketchup approach.

Gotta be proper chip sized chips though. French fries are the work of the devil.

Sweet potatoes also make great chips - smother them in olive oil and bake in the oven.

Ah yes, Sweet Potato wedges are excellent, good call.

And sprinkle with sea salt and a little black pepper.

I hate to say it, but unless chips are deep fried they are second class citizens of the chip world. I eat them as a healthier option, but oven chips/ chips cooked in a tiny bit of oil/ baked chips are just not the same.

Triple cooked is the way to go.

Fun fact: In the UK, chips are traditionally made from potatoes.

Cheesy chips are an absolute delight.

Cheesy, chips and beans. Perfect after pub grub. Shame Greasy Joes shuts early in Ciren these days.

I used to love Greasy Joes when I worked just round the corner in Love Lane....small place but great grub.

I was Computer Services Manager at Cotswold Mailing Systems in "The Hidings" from 96 to 2001.

Not one I'm familiar with. I lived not too far from Love Lane (next to the old Vygon building) most of my childhood so was being nosey.

It was up behind the Massey Ferguson sales right up the end almost on the roundabout with Wilkinson Road.

I can't even eat chip shop chips any more because of my bloody coeliac (no gluten) so it's girly chips or nothing for me  :)

My first job was at Sonix Communications in Merchants House on the corner of Love Lane and Wilkinson road (95-98). Still can't place it :)

Chips with garlic sauce or curry sauce. Actually, peppercorn sauce top the lot. I feel famished just thinking of it. I concur with the comment aforementioned, cheesey chip are scrumptious. Drooling in a mad seizure just thinking about it.

You probably just need to take your tablets.

Chips and curry sauce  - yes!!!

There used to be a great chippy in Pontypridd that did a mean curry sauce. Proper beer munchy food.

pontypridd is a nice town, I went through on my way back from Merthyr Tydfill. Tom Jones was born there. I enjoyed seeing the terraced housing built right up against the hillsides.

Chilli cheese fries. Like the ones they do at Atomic Burger. Oh my fucking goodness.

I sold chips for a living.....oven chips no better for you than proper chips.

I made some fucking amazing chips just now, albeit by accident.

I had them frying away but needed to unplug the fryer for a sec but, for whatever reason, forgot to plug it in again. So, when I came to check on them they were just sitting there in fat that was nowhere near hot enough for them to fry in. Took them out, heated the fat up again and then put them back in.

The result? Fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Best chips I've had for a long, long time.

Double fried chips?

Yeah.

I've tried it before because I read it's supposed to make good chips but it never worked out. I think the trick that made it work this time was having them sit in the oil for a while before noticing it wasn't hot enough.

My stepdad and step brother have chips shops and burger bars in Chippenham.  Ive worked in most of them in my younger years and ate a lot of chips. So I quite like chips.  University days were marked by chips and cheese at Demontfort student union.

This seemed more interesting in my head.

Have you ever tried a deep fried mars bar? I had one once, to borrow a phrase from our friends near Wales it was Gurt Lush.
