The Bell on the Common  is a decent place, middle of no where and surrounded by country roads. Under new management now but can't imagine it will have changed much since I last went there.

Edit: forgot to mention, it is in Broughton Gifford.

You might enjoy this place between Ramsbury and Marlborough.

Who knows you might even have Mr Wray sitting at the next table!

The Swan at Southrop has good winding roads and great food.

The Five Bells in Wickham isn't in Wiltshire, but only 20 mins from Swindon and a great, great pub.

Does the Red Lion in Cricklade count?  If not the the Vale of the White Horse Inn at Minety is closer and good.

I like riverside pubs so the swan at radcot is a fav of mine. There's a pub which does very nice food further up the road on the other side of clanfield but I'm buggered If I can remember what it's called.

The Canfield tavern?

No, that's in clanfield itself. Just had a look and it's the plough at alvescot on the road out of clanfield. Looks like its changed hands since I went there and reviews are not favourable. Nice drive out that way nonetheless and plenty of country pubs available.

Hate to say it, but Oxfordshire does have some good country pubs not too far from swindon.

As does Gloucestershire.  I can recommend The Royal Oak at Tetbury.  One of the bosses of one of the companies I work for bought it and did it out.  Very good place and good food now.

Many of us still consider them to be in Berkshire....Fernham, for example, in the lee of the Berkshire Downs.

Yeah, but you still use Constantinople and Messopotamia

Byzantium....if you please.

It's interesting how in this time of Great War remembrance, the Mesopotamian campaign 1914-18, is largely forgotten. Most probably because it was largely fought by Indian troops....the devious Hun tried to stir up the locals to jihad, against us, as a balwark in their support for the Ottomans.

If Mesopotamia, had remained in the bosom of the British Empire the world would today be a better place...

Yep. The woodman does a nice burger, but the eagle at little coxwell is even better.

Mark Lawrenson used to run the Eagle, after he was sacked as Scum manager by Maxwell

The WWI exhibition at the IWM in London does cover the conflicts away from the Western front, of course it's disproportionally skewed towards the Western front but the role of the Indian troops is prevalent, along with the Anzac etc
