Title: "Swindon of the South West"?
Post by: Dostoyevsky on Sunday, February 10, 2013, 01:28:29
"Swindon of the South West"?

I was watching one of my favourite programmes yesterday called "Great British Railway Journeys" presented by Micheal Portillo. They visited a place in Devon called Newton Abbot, a location with big railway associations, that proudly proclaims itself "The Swindon of the South West".

Now this begs a big question, clearly we are not regarded as South West?

One look on the map has always been enough to raise my doubts. In my opinion we're clearly not.

Here's the clip, a really endearing railway man in Newton Abbot, taking pride in his town's Swindon connections.

Cheers Shaw Rosso. I've had serious flu in the last week, enjoyed reading your write ups for the games. I've been told to mute down on the forum. I am under strict orders.

One thing that has always made me laugh, is when we've played the likes of Exeter and Plymouth,
some commentators refer to the games as a "West Country Derby".

They aren't! Swindon to Exeter and to Plymouth are over 115 and 160 miles, respectively.

If Swindon and Exeter/Plymouth are generally considered within the 'South West' then of course they'll orchestrate it in it being something far more important, regardless of mileage.

Whenever possible, the sports media will make any fixture out to be a 'derby'.

I always say that Swindon is the gateway to the West.

you're allowed to argue, just go easy on the potentially libellous comments against gold medal winning olympians.

I did see the programme in question and did find the phrase 'The Swindon of the South West' slightly surprising. When I think about it though, I think I would consider Swindon to be in 'The West', although only just - the 'Gateway to the West'  - if you prefer and as has been mentioned. Newton Abbott on the other hand, I would consider to be in the 'South West', so I suppose the statement is fair enough.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, Swindon rule the West Country, and Oxford rule fuck all.

Fight, fight whereever you may be we are the boys from the West Country....

Remember when the Town end chants came from hymn books rather than Sloop John B
