Yup. If I were at work now I'd be sat in the refectory drinking tea and most likely reading about snow.

Yep I couldn't stop at the first roundabout despite going at a sensible crawling pace. 2nd one I got to I just about got the car stopped.

Traction control was going nuts even in a straight line, high gear, low revs. Thought fuck this and went home.

Work have told everyone who isn't very local to go home. I'd have made the 40 mile journey for nothing so pleased with my decision.

Kingshill and Vic Hill were more or less gridlocked an hour ago...snow is getting worse. Don't know why people just don't walk.

TO be fair the roads are far worse than I imagined. Lots of cars wheel spinning, gridlock from Moredon->Thamesdown drive. Glad I didn't bother trying to get in now.

Snow should start to break in an hour or two.

Tried to get the bus to devizes. Took 15 minutes to get up vic hill sideswiping a tree on the way, cracking one of the windows. Got a call once I got to the top telling me no to bother, which was fortunate as the bus was going no further anyway.

Had to walk to the town center to get the bus home, which was fun in the flattest, most rubber-soled shoes known to man. Got the bus then had to walk most of the way anyway because akers way was a standstill.

And that was the story of the day I didn't go to work.

and in the DM it is compulsory for every weather related story to incude in the title (in brackets) how long said forecast is set to last, ala

(and forecasters say it will last for a whole WEEK)

I hate the DM

Winter tyres are mandatory in winter in Luxembourg. However not in France so when it snows the French are the ones that often get stuck/cause the accidents.

It does snow more in Luxembourg than the UK granted but food for thought.

why the fuck anyone would drive with normal tyres in snow is beyond me

Most people are fucking idiots and have no idea how much grip they lose in snow.

Spoke to my old dear earlier who said she was following 2 cars onto a roundabout. She slowed down (in her 4x4) and both cars carried on, oblivious to the conditions, understeered in a straight line, mounted the curb and smashed into each other. That'll learn 'em.

My mum has told me a story of Yugoslavia in the 80's. One winter there was snow non-stop for 4 months. At some stages there was about 10 foot of it, what did people do? Dig trenches and carry on with their lives. (Some people died when the trenches caved in but that's completely beside the point)

Last winter my grandad almost froze to death on his way home, he got stuck in the snow and there was there about an hour or so, -15. He was saved by a local stray dog which alerted people to him. This dog is a demi-god in his neighourhood now.

Countries get that always get loads of snow cope a lot better and are used to the conditions. Countries who don't get a lot of snow usually don't cope well and aren't used to the conditions.

Well I've had an interesting 26 hours !

Started an hour south of Munich airport - managed to drive there passing 3 over turned cars on the side of the motorway - no snow clearance or gritting happening there !

Got to airport, boarded plane to sit there for 3 hours, then be told the airport was closing and we were going nowhere.  Not one hotel room available within a 60km radius so tried to sleep,on the airport floor

Plane was supposed to take off at 11.30 this morning - finally left at 1.30 - flew to gatwick and circled the airport for an hour while the de-iced the runway !

Finally touched down at 3 this afternoon - have to say the drive back to Swindon was a dream - hardly anything on the motorway and made it back by 5 - then took me 30 minutes to get from the motorway to Old Town !

Needless to say I'm knackered, but going on the lash in an hour so that should help :-)

Walking up and down peoples driveways and paths in general is somewhat hazardous at the moment, I swear I could give Torvill and Dean a run for their money  :suicide:

Can't get up Prospect Hill in Old Town, car abandoned (parked!) at the bottom to walk home... so I'll be off tomorrow

I don't really know Swindon very well so I thought I would Google Street View Prospect Hill to see what sort of hill you were up against - what is that shit tip at the bottom?  Is it the old college I've seen mentioned?

We have had heavy snow down here in Chard for almost 24 hours now, well over 6 inches in that time, its doing my fucking head in, no deliveries to shops and supermarkets here at all for that period.

All schools and most shops shut today and most major roads still impassable, can't even move my car out of our street :(

Dash-cams are massively popular in russian cars. You can spend hours on youtube watching russian dash-cam footage

Not russian, but footage from the 2011 japanese tsunami, from the quake to the water. I don't think it's continuous, but the bit where the water just engulfs them shows how manic the whole thing is

The crash on the last page can't possibly have been a Russian though because Eastern European's are used to snowy conditions. http://i.imgur.com/OOE2Na3.gif

I love watching crashes. Although I should probably clarify that as prangs, lucky escapes and amusing stupidity. And to clarify further, it's because I used to watch cars, lots, on YouTube and you eventually start to see crashes.

I remember this video being kind of cool - if you like drivers having fun and enjoy cars. If you don't enjoy cars I expect it's shit. (No crashes.)

Your right, the crash happened on Feb 24th 2012 and the driver of the SUV was killed and the report states there was no evidence that the driver was distracted by using a mobile phone or drink driving and that the vehicle wheels got stuck in a snow rut sending it into the path of the lorry.
