Title: Insuring a car for a 17 year old
Post by: 4D on Thursday, January 10, 2013, 22:48:35
Anyone have experience of this?

What is the best (cheapest) option....

a) Insure on our policy as a named driver
b) He gets his own insurance

Ta.

Google a few as some now will insure them cheap if they have a black box fitted to the car or they agree not to go out at night.

He gets his own insurance, put you as a named driver to reduce price.  Cheapest legal way of doing it and works out cheaper in the long run because he starts building up NCB as long as he stays accident free.

Aviva and Churchill was the cheapest for my lad at the time but do ask the lemur

make sure its a small engine car. i've been driving for 10 years and back then you could get away with a 1.4 and not get raped. These days from what i understand you need to be driving a poxy 1l.

I've been driving for 25 years  :(

I need to buy myself a second car and I don't want a small engine one. If he gets his own car it'll be a 1.0 or 1.2 (group one or two), but if it costs him a fortune to insure then I'll look to share a small engine motor with him, hence the question.

Internet forums weren't prevalent 18 years ago, else this thread could have been avoided.

My 17 year old son used his mums policy to get his own insurance on his mums car for £ 100 a month, that was with Churchill.

Thats what i'm doing at the moment, pay just over £100 a month.

If I had my own car with my Mum as a named driver, I still can't find it for less that £2,000.

Is he building up his own no-claims though?

i did for three years, then got my own policy when after i turned 21.

i think the NCB is only applicable if you take out the policy with the same company you were a named driver with as opposed to normal where you can transfer them between companies

Semi-related question. I had one years no claims when i scrapped my car in october 2011. When I get a new car, will I have to start building no claims up again from the beginning?

So when I renewed my policy last, july 2011, i've got until july 2013 for it to still be valid?

Looks like I'll be starting from scratch

It's two years from the date your policy ended, October 2011?

Just done one for my lad, did pay a couple of hundred up front but being able to pay monthly payments makes it worth it. We used Co-Op.

That's a thought, didn't ask that :-) still got some my nan left me  ;) I did a lot of shopping around and they gave my lad the best deal. Admiral & Diamond were the most expensive quotes.

Still can't get a quote for less than £1600 for a one litre corsa  :(

In fact the prices vary daily when I put the info into a comparison site, quite dramatically.

£1,600 is probably about as good as you're ever going to get.

I think you're right, though I was hoping there would be some obscure company that would do it for a grand  :)

The excesses are £500 to £750, if he makes a claim he'll basically be a couple of grand down I.e. Loss of original car, excess, new car.

Never use price comparison sites. They never work out cheaper than ringing companies direct. Brokers are much better.

Ah, good point. I'll give the brokers a try this weekend. I haven't used one in years because my own insurance is cheap.

A lot of different things you can do to get the price down too. Low limited mileage policies for example, or make him take pass plus if it will knock a lot off the price.

He'll be starting a job soon that will bump his mileage up for the commute, I'll have a look at this pass plus thing.

When I entered that I had pass plus to see how much cheaper it would be, the premium actually went up.

Have you tried Direct Line? I insured my 1.4 litre Corsa for less than a grand with them, although I was 19 at the time so that may have made a difference, worth a try if you haven't already though, see what quote you get online, then ring them up and asked what you can do to make it cheaper, they usually knock a bit off every year when I give them a call.

Always made it cheaper for me with Direct Line, although up until this time last year I was paying £1k for an A3 so the Corsa quote doesn't sound too bad

That's not how an excess works...  ???

Unless you are referring to the fact they always under-value your total loss.

If i buy a car worth £2000....does it cost a quarter the price to insure than a car worth £8000?

Serious question....i havn't a clue how it works....just pay it!

Title: Re: Insuring a car for a 17 year old

It's all done on risk. Obviously the higher value car then the insurance will be more, but its has many factors like age, how long you've owned the car, how long your driving and even your occupation can have an effect on the price.

Not for me. For a >£1000 car the insurance was always £2000+ and for my brand new Punto it was £850.

Most of the cost of insurance for a young driver will be for third party cover (ie the cost of the claim of the person you hit).

That is why Third Party only insurance is equally as (and sometimes more) expensive than fully comp.

Just got a quote for our 17 year old Son of £750 from the meerkat, although to be fair he hasn't passed his test yet, obviously it will go up a fair bit once he passes his test.

Got a good quote from one of the "black box" companies. He has passed his test and is raring to go. If we get him insured tonight online does he have to wait for the box to be fitted? Couldn't see that on the website (though I'm sure it must be there)

My lad had a box fitted and he could drive as soon as the insurance confirm button was pressed. They told him he then needed to arrange a date and time within the next 3 weeks to have the box fitted as part of the agreement. He's had it fitted for around 5 months now and has already had the monthly payments reduced by half because he's been driving within the required conditions to keep the payments low. It also means I can keep an eye on how he's been driving which might be a bit annoying for him but reassuring for me.

What are the restrictions that you have to keep within with a black box?

The one we are looking at has no curfew. I believe they check you stick to speed limits, don't brake excessively or accelerate hard. If you drive well then you can have a 10% reduction in your payments, likewise bad driving increases your premium.

Yes pretty much the same, they look at breaking, accelerating, cornering, speed and time of day. He has no night time curfew but is rewarded for not driving to often past 11pm. Like I said he has been rewarded with a 48% discount fir good driving but he realises it can also go the other way if he becomes a boy racer !

With the 48% discount, what did it take the premium down to? What sort of car? I was wondering if we would have to change our Suzuki Swift to something even more gutless to help keep costs down.

Paid £300 up front, and was left with 10 £100 payments, now down to around £52, It's an SXi 1.2 Corsa. It would of actually been cheaper to buy a 1.4 Corsa of the same age, they obviously take what they can from the youngsters/parents.
