Title: Static Cycling World Record Attempt
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Friday, December 14, 2012, 22:43:33
Jamie McDonald, 25, from Gloucester is currently attempting a World Record for the longest static bike ride for charity after 14 days earlier cycling from Bangkok to Gloucester. The record currently stands at 225 hours in 11 days. He started on December 8 and is still going strong.

My wife has been helping officiate and I went down to meet the guy with our kids this evening. He has so far raised something like £13k for the Pied Piper Appeal. He is an absolute inspiration.

Here is a live stream of him in action:

I'll be there to push him on if he passes through Bangkok.

He's already done that bit Flash. He started in Bangkok and cycled to Gloucester. Half way there, he decided to attempt the 'static cycling record'. I've added a photo to show the temporary structure that has been erected in the docks to house his exercise bike, which he has now been riding for 7 days non stop!

11 days cycling without sleeping? Fair play to him regardless, but that sounds BIT misleading

Yes, I would think staying awake for 11 days would be harder than the cycling bit!

Incidentally, 11 days is in fact the world record:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Gardner_(record_holder)

Quote
Randy Gardner holds the scientifically documented record for the longest period a human being has intentionally gone without sleep not using stimulants of any kind. In 1964—as a 17-year-old high school student in San Diego, California—Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours (eleven days), breaking the previous record of 260 hours held by Tom Rounds of Honolulu.[1]

...Gardner's sleep recovery was instrumented by sleep researchers who noted changes in sleep structure during postdeprivation recovery.[8][9] After completing his record, Gardner slept 14 hours and 40 minutes, awoke naturally around 8:40 p.m., and stayed awake until about 7:30 p.m. the next day, when he slept an additional ten and a half hours. Gardner appeared to fully recover from his loss of sleep, with follow up sleep recordings taken one, six, and ten weeks after the fact showing no significant differences. No long term psychological or physical effects have been observed.[10]

i bet 14 hours of continuous sleep is amazing

I've slept 15 hours before. 40 hours without sleep + loads of alcohol.

He gets some very short breaks (for practical things like going to the loo) which he stores up so that he can get an hours sleep every now and then.

Seen this on the news tonight. It also showed a bit when he was passing through Afgan, he was making a recording and gunfire started ringing out around him ! Although he's broke the record he wants to carry on until the morning then decide if he carries on or not. He seemed really upbeat Concidering his lack of sleep.

I remember when some nutty Japanese bloke broke the record for running up and down escalators. He went about 11 days and seeing him finish was funny because he sprinted up and was jumping around. I couldn't help but think, why not do another 10 minutes instead?

He's sorting out witnesses to cover Friday at the moment No plans to stop yet.

He's raised £18k so far. The hope is that there is a lot more national interest now that he has broken the record. Great features on Points West and The West Tonight.

That is some achievement. He has certainly done his bit for the Pied Piper appeal and I'll be giving a few pound. Imagine cycling for two weeks pretty much non stop then getting off the cycling machine only to have to go Christmas shopping !
