Di Canio may hand Louis his first start

PAOLO Di Canio has revealed he had a late change of heart ahead of the victory at Stevenage last week in deciding not to hand Louis Thompson a start in the middle of midfield.

Di Canio told the Advertiser that he had held training sessions with Thompson accompanying Troy Archibald-Henville at the heart of the team before opting to play John Bostock in that position instead last Saturday.

Troy in centre-mid?? Really?? :hmmm:

Fair play - good to have that option.

I pray to the gods of football that I never see TAH play centre mid again. He was beyond awful. He made Risser look like xavi

That's a pretty strong point of view there!

He was that bad I actually felt sorry for him. Ferry was by far our best player during the game but he needed some help in there and it was not forth comming from Troy. On a more positive note in Troys favour, Flint now being out for four games could hand him a decent run in the team and he should be much better in his natural position. I think troy is better on the ground playing the ball out but not as good as flint in the air.

Thompson looked much more comfortable there when he came on. I think PDC dropped a bollock by not playing him from the start.

I agree with that but perhaps Paolo thought the game was going to be a lot more physical than it turned out to be so Troy would be the better option. Still a gamble as far as I'm concerned, that didn't pay off.

He may have had a poor game but Troy actually sounds ideal for a defensive midfielder.

I reckon we'll be seeing him there again and I reckon in time he will nail it. Just a hunch.

Or maybe he could play in the position that was good enough to land him player of the year last season for exeter?

Maybe he could, and maybe he could turn out it be even better in a new role?

It's not as though it would be the first time PDC has converted a player successfully and I don't see people complaining about De Vita and McCormack playing 'out of position'

To be fair it didn't bother me at all once I knew Troy was starting in the middle, he has looks pretty confident playing the ball out of the back and normally does the simple thing and finds a Town shirt further up the park. Maybe it was nerves? He looked uncomfortable from the off and IMO just didn't settle.

I think I read somewhere that he did play there for Exeter a few times and did well. Although I may have dreamt that.

Troy is a fucking hoof merchant no matter where he plays. Really fucking annoyed that he is shit, because we had a brilliant song for him. The cunt.

It could work. Its a shame we no longer have reserve matches where we could try these sort of things.

Cost plenty and I reckon will be well paid too. Too many square pegs in round holes which could cost us eventually? We're not in the basement division now

Presumably that's also what he had in mind at Stevenage until Troy was ill during the warm up.

Troy is a decent centre half but playing in midfield remiinded me of when we played Kanyuka there for a couple of games.

Best thing to do is play Ritchie in the centre, Roberts and De Vita on the wings with Troy back in defence. Simples.

Not a bad shout, I'd like to see Roberts in the centre if we had to, he has a bit more 'build' over Ritchie but whatever happens tomorrow it will be an experiment

This is what I was thinking, keep Ritchie out wide. Knowing/not knowing how Paolo thinks we could start with Rooney in the centre.

Dont be such a prick...he has had one bad match out of position.

Hopefully L. Thompson gets a start. I wonder if he'll play Ward and Devera in the middle of defence? I'd rather Troy had a rest from the first team until he's remembered how to play football again. It would be nice to see Williams and Storey up front too!

Roberts would be more suited to playing a central role. He takes too long to get a cross in when he plays out wide.

Yeah he's had one bad game, but it's fair to say his passing ability is more akin to Jerel Ifil than Beckerbauer.

Amid all the manager’s talk of not having a large enough squad, I'd like to see Luke Rooney given a go there tonight. Yes, we'd be lightweight, but he is mobile, unlike Roberts... and I still can't get his performance for Gillingham against us last year out of my head. Waste of a resource if he has been permanently cast aside.
