I understand a in a way agree with what PdC is saying here, he needs to keep a young player's feet on the ground.

But football is game full of cliches and truisms, and one of those is that you pick your form players. I understand we might want more experience starting on the pitch against Villa, but I hope he isn't moved too far from from first team action.

PdC is exactly right to deflect attention away from Storey, and we fans could help by doing the same.

Think no further than Ben Joyce...well taken goal on debut v Port Vale, albeit in final game of the season, where he showed a bit of finishing quality, got another couple of chances, but think Byrne stuck him in for a game and he was terrible, so off to Torquay, and now playing for Weymouth prob in local Dorset league...still only 23.

You've only got to listen to Storey's interview after the game to know he's got his head screwed on. Even his tweet the following morning was very sensible; along the lines of "thanks for the messages but that was yesterday and now it's time to move on".

Y'know.

I recall with fondness Alan Young's winner v McMahon's Blackpool.....he's fat he's Scouse etc ringing out from the TE.

Another of the type, would be Oggie Hunt....played a real blinder when getting a chance v Scum setting up a couple of goals, but ultimately not good enough.

he sounds too modest and nice. Probably lacks the confidence and mental toughness to make it as a pro.

It's something you need as well as ability.....think Dicky Plumb, was on the Town's books back in the early 60's, had  scored shed loads for Swindon schools, when they always used to go well in the national cup.  Couldn't get a game at the CG as we were stocked with strikers, so went to Rovers, scored a few for them but then a backward step to Yeovil, becoming their record signing, scored loads for them and became their record sale to Charlton where he did OK, a spell at Exeter, then back to Yeovil, finished at 32 which isn't bad....Yeovil's second highest post war goal scorer.

Can never tell how anyones career will go. So many things can happen.

Alan Young??

As I remember it, he didn't show much finishing quality at all. It was a 2nd bite that he had to hammer underneath a keeper making his first team debut.

The point is, that it can take players a while to reveal themselves as crap and similarly, a while to reveal themselves as decent, so don't judge either way too soon. (I'm talking fan's perspective here)

Dick Plumb went on to score a shed load of goals for my local side Chard Town in the late 80's and still lives locally.

There are several players in our history that are said to be "the next big thing" then they fall away after a handful of games for us into non-league oblivion.

A fair few of them had great ability, or great application but so few had both of those which you need to be successful.

I have seen Storey a few times and he seems to be physically strong with bags of pace and energy, needs to work a little on his close ball control and his finishing.....but who better than PdC to help bring him on with those parts that need the work.

True about Plumb...I'm struggling with "the next big thing" comment though, beyond Jamie Reynolds, have you any other names to chuck into the debate?

I remeber Mark Gardiner was labelled as a big thing back under Macari who said he was one of the best prospects he had seen and went on to have a good career with Crewe, don't forget the Chippenham Bomber Charlie Griffin who promised a lot and delivered fuck all, there were a couple more but I will try and remember them but memory fails me currently :)

I do remember Mark Gardiner was a striker with us and only became a solid pro when converted to midfielder at Crewe. He scored 25 goals in 30 reserve games back in the late 80s and scored shed loads for the youths and schoolboys because I played with him when he was 14 and 15.

Don't remember Gardiner getting the big hype....although I do remember him playing a few games.  Kids who play for England schools or U 16's, like Alex Henshall, are the ones who get the treatment, but now they just get taken by bigger clubs up the food chain, like Walcott. 

We have had a few England/Wales/Scotland/N Ireland schoolboy internationals but they never ever seem to come through to make it even with other clubs.

It is very difficult to make the jump from a good level of youth/schoolboy to make it big, as you say Henshall is the most recent but we also had the massive hype of Rideout and he had a good career at a good level and then we had Leigh Mills.....not a striker of course....but captain of England schoolboys then sold on to Spurs and is now playing for Eastleigh at the age of 24, apparently had a very bad attitude and thought he had "made it" when he got to Spurs.

It's scary to think Mills is only 24, as it seems such a long time ago, well 8 years since he left us for Spurs.

On the other side of the coin.....we had an ex England youth international who was released by Man Utd after being hugely prolific at youth and reserve level for them and scored 2 hattricks for England schoolboys in 74.....Peter Coyne.

He had a good scoring record with us and Crewe but never made it as big as he was hoped to.

And now works at Manchester International Airport.

Good goalscorer and not a bad player but was always a little too lightweight for the lower leagues I think.

Another lad from the early noughties, was Matty Collins, Welsh lad, who never got a game for us but we flogged to Fulham for 200K.  Never made it there, and then Swansea took a punt...played a few for Martinez, but moved down to League of Wales stuff, currently at Aberystwyth Town, still only 26.

And the lad who was the bollox and played v Ipswich at home on the TV.....got ripped to shreds and that was that.
Cannot even remember his name............Williams maybe?

Yeah I remember him, he was tipped to make the Wales team at about 21 then fell away to nothing, in comparison, in the LoW.

That whole game was just an embarresment though, not just him, lots of experienced players had mares that day too.

He fucked Imogen Thomas though, fair play for that

He did also get a really bad injury. I remember being over the county ground field as a lad and him and Paul McAreavey who was living on Shrivy Road at the time came over. They joined in heads and volleys despite Williams being on crutches and having one leg in a cast.

Graz scored a beauty that day I seem to remember, it went downhill after that.

My car then wouldn't start after the game resulting in an hours wait for the AA, not one the more enjoyable matchday experiences all round.
