Just a heads up for you guys who, like me, still think they can afford to waste approximately half of their life on this bloody game.

The new skin is a mess.

I am not overly impressed with it, it looks like a new skin/menu system and a couple of new additions.

Not really any improvement on last years offering. 5/10.

downloaded the demo, looks good i think, quite like the change of skin. not too hard to get around.

done pre season and played a couple of games, the 3d enginei think has improved a lot once again, even on my shitty slowed down heap of junk laptop the movement was quite smooth.

I have to be honest and say I see no improvement in the 3d match engine whatsoever, it looks identical to FM2012, the only difference I see is the concrete textures look darker, the actual animations of players, crowd and ball movement and everything else looks identical to me.

All settings are set to high and 1920x1080 resolution as they always have been and I just don't see any improvement at all.

I usually only buy FM every other year, because often the changes in game play from one year to the next are negligible.

I only usually bother when there are significant changes made. 

I did the code offer from Greenman so only cost £19, which is good value for the database changes etc they have to do to keep it up-to-date.

Getting some stupid goalkeeping mistakes but once that's fixed it should be a good'un.

the STFC staff are not updated, only a couple of the current lot and Kate Cady is still on there too

Well as we know FM is actual real life and I'm the new Town manager. Brought in George Francomb from Norwich for £110k and signed German defender Marcel Eger on a free so far.

Currently played 5, won 3, drawn 1, lost 1. Also beat Brum 4-1 at home in the cup!

 Just got beat 3-1 by Scunthorpe with Bedwell in nets as Wes is out for 2 months!

Interestingly Celtic have signed Charlie Charlie Austin for £4.3 mil with us getting £80k now and £450k over the next 48 months...

Is it worth preordering to download the beta version? Are there any restrictions on the beta version or is it just that you can only go so far?

Anyone tried Classic mode yet?

I think a big reason I didn't get in to FM12 was that it's got so in depth that they've stopped literally just short of picking the colour of each players underwear on match day, meaning it takes about five hours to get to your first league game. I like the idea of stripping away a lot of the pointless extras but I don't want to lose too much. Does classic mode still have 3D match engine and team talks?

Just went to buy this in Tesco and was told they've stopped selling it, might be a problem with it....strange

Anyone else find that goalkeeping is terrible? For either side they are useless.

7 games in so far, unbeaten and won 6-2v franchise and on pens v fulham to set up a home tie v chelsea! Rooney is very good im finding, scored 7 so far

I spent last night spewing my ring up so have had to have today off so i will be putting quite a bit of time in on this today. I am loving the new challenges.

i like in classic mode that you can unlock cirtain things, like abolish work permits etc, no idea how you do it, not read into it.
Unless its just locked on the demo.

Can anyone recommend a cheap/loan keeper as Foderingham is utter shite and I signed Danny Coyne on a free and hes not much better.

Salif Diao is pretty good in midfield on a free as is Cristiano Zanetti.

George Francomb is a good cheap right back a position Swindon is lacking in the game(!) I signed him for £80k from Norwich.

Don't sign Jason Koumas as he is shit.

Also nobody wants to buy or even take out on loan Benson, L Rooney, De Vita, Devera or Smith.

I also signed Sam Parkin from St Mirren for £80k and hes got me 3 goals in 4 games but A Rooney has got 7 in 5 games and is the best Swindon player for me.

Ritchie, Roberts, Ferry, Williams and Collins are all very average and injury prone in my game.

I signed Rob Lainton from Bolton as a replacement for Fods, who is dreadful!
He's not got the best scout report, but he's pretty well rounded and his stats are coming along well for me. Should give him a go...
I'm really lacking an out and out goalscorer, usually there is one or two top strikers on a free, like Brandy from recent FM's.. But I can't really seem to find one!

Williams has scored something like 15 for me as a poacher coming into December. Since the game updated from beta to full game I've really fallen away and keep getting beat 2-1. A new gk and a new AMR/AML needed to give Ritchie and Roberts some competition though. Not sure the board will sanction this though as we're overon the wage budget and currently losing £200k+ a month

I started the game well with a 4-0 win against Yeovil and penalty win against Watford away in the LC then 2-0 away win at MKD and a 2-1 win against Stevenage and then I have gone on a losing run of 5 games in a row including a 3-1 defeat at the Pox.

I just cant find a tactic that seems to work consistantly for my team. I think I should start blaming the embargo or saying in public that the players I bought in arent good enough :D

Actually I do find it very hard to get results at the moment, I even tried my old tactic that did well in FM2012 and that was awful in FM2013.

I started off well as a 4-4-2 and have tried 4-2-4 and 3-5-2 and 3-1-4-2 but nothing seems to stop me conceding silly sloppy goals and not being able to score more than 1 a game.

Oh and Miller has missed 3 penalties for me this season, he no longer takes them for me!

most people are experiencing the same problems, jj. read the sigames forums if you want to lose faith in humanity.

the main problem seems to be with defenders not closing down or tackling properly, ignoring through balls and goalkeepers generally being a bit hopeless.

i'm into my second season now and only managed to finish 10th in my first season, although i found that dropping the defensive line deeper helped a lot. i went on a decent run towards the end of the season after tinkering with my tactics.

it's worth reading the tactics forum if you're struggling, the match engine has changed considerably this year and if you don't adapt you'll have problems

I've taken one look at the full mode and bombed it straight off for classic. Not just on the time consuming front but it's so much nicer to navigate around as well. The full version is one big clusterfuck of information.

Melchiot was a beast in my Swindon game.

Started a new game in Italy with Parma. First game up, Juventus at Home....nice 1-0 win. Next game, away to Meeeeeeeelan, 3-2 away win. Going nicely along so far!

I will go have a read about tactics on the SiForum because I just can't fathom out the tactics at the moment, I will give the defending line deeper a go as you suggest but again as you state the defence is awful and keepers totally ineffective in their role of shot topping for me so far.

But then again it could be that Foders has poor stats in comparison.

Cant buy a win at the moment, might start again, only managed to win 1 friendly and lost my first 4 games, this is shit. :-)

After tweaking a bit I got them playing quite solidly with only the occasional tragic mistake.

This season I've got Caddis back which is great.

I've noticed that adapting tactics according to your opponents and even during the match is more important than ever. I think l plug and play tactics are finished. ..

I am sure you are right with that, tactics do vary in-game much more with more of a noticable change during match play.

I wish i could get Caddis back the defence does miss him badly, Devera or McCormack just don't cut it at RB and I sent Thompson out on loan to Salisbury for the year.

Definately a work in progress working out these tactics.

I have just managed to get the board to buy the County Ground from the council, but they have decided that they won't expand it despite the fact that it is a sell out every week.

Seems it will only expand to 22k anyway and if you progress further you'd get something like this.

Im just going to start again.  It would appear that Im shit at this.

Biggest thing i'd say is don't sign many players at once. Maybe 3/4 a season at most, use team cohesion for your main training thingy. Signing lots of players at once sends your team to shit (bit like when Paolo signed all those loan players a few months back) So when you sign a player, make sure he's worth it otherwise simply make do with what you have.

Wingbacks and 3 centre-backs works a treat in this version.

i was having a great game with Southampton but it's gone to shit since the patch and i can't find a way to get the team creating decent chances anymore - wingbacks are definitely less effective for one thing.

since the patch: P9 W1 D3 and L5.

prior to the patch: P16 W10 D3 L3.

changed my formation and have been tweaking it as i go.

i think i'll just give up for a bit

Has it sorted the keeper errors? I was getting them everygame and was infuriating!

I had a great one with my keeper, defender passed back to keeper, keeper took one touch and then fell over leaving the opposition to score.

At least your keeper took a touch! Mine let the pass back go in at least 5/6 times

I like the new update.

In my first 4 games with Rangers I have won them 4-0 away, 5-0 home, 6-0 away and 6-1 home.

Previously I drew 2, won 3 and lost 3 in the preceding 8 games and didn't keep 1 clean sheet in any of those games.

the patch updates only work if you load a new game withthat patch. If your game was loaded before the patch then your still playing the old version. If you did start a new game then ignore me

anyone else found the latest update has ruined their current game? i was doing okay with my Swindon side but since the patch i'm being torn to shreds, just lost 9-1 at man city.

Am currently desperately resisting getting this game. It was only £17 in HMV the other day too, I think I had it in my hand for a bit. It tends to destroy my productivity at home!

started a game on wednesday, started unemployed, applied for the vacant Swindon job, and got it, woop.

There's no money and only about £2k in wages free, so only loaned Danny Green and signed James Chambers. Doing quite well though, 2 wins 1 draw in the league, and beaten Bournemouth and Wolves in the League Cup so far. Promising!

See FM14 is out shortly. Couple of new positions that are perhaps suited to a certain Kasim and Mason?

I got into FM2013 but there are a fair few areas that need a great improvement on this years offering.

I look forward to getting it probably for Christmas this year and hope they release a fully working beta to try before you buy as they used to.
