The Breakfast shows for BBC Wilts and BBC Swindon are going to merge.

The presenter from BBC Wilts has said he hasn't got the show after the merger, so I assumed Graham Mack had.

They are both pretty good TBH.

I just don't understand why they'd merge the Swindon and Wiltshire breakfast radio shows. I mean the two places are completely unrelated.

 ;D

I think he must be in the Swindon liberation army Jan. Fighting for emancipation from oppression from the imperialistic Wiltshire dictatorship.

BBC Radio Wales
BBC Radio Scotland
BBC Radio Swindon

How is it that Swindon ended up with its own BBC local radio station?

Excluding Salisbury, there must be about as many people in the borough of swindon as there are in the rest of wiltshire.

We deserve our station dammit.

Graham Mac is down under on holiday (I think its just holiday)

Whilst Swindon is in Wiltshire ;) I have as much interest in what is happening in Salisbury as I do Birmingham. That is zero interest.

Shame they've buggered the morning show. Its the only place I get Swindon news from, that's the borough in general not just the football club:(

Carefully chosen words there Batch but I can see through your thin veneer of deceit.

You are clearly rebellious against the Wiltshire cause. You and your ilk will be made to pay for your treachery.

Lets be honest, whilst Wiltshire is home to by far the greatest team the world has ever seen, its not a proper county on account of only having a minor counties cricket team.

Gloucestershire. Now that's what I call a county.

Graham Mack is currently in New Zealand, he stopped off at Tokyo on the way and is back next week I believe.

The merger was announced a year or so ago, The breakfast show is the last bit that is exclusively Swindon, from 9am until 7pm it is Wiltshire wide, except soccer specials which switch back to the Swindon broadcast. Some may remember when it was announced that Mack said on his breakfast show that it could be the end of the soccer specials and we are more likely to get a regional sports show covering us, Rovers, City, Yeovil, Plymouth, Exeter and possibly Hereford with just updates on each of the games periodically, much like Sky's Soccer Saturday, just on the radio and broadcast out of the Bristol studios.

I know we moan about the various commentators such as Chris, Vic, Sean etc, personally I find none of them particularly offensive, but all of them offer a much better alternative to a die hard City fan and updates from games such as Knowle West v Clifton Ladies.

Didn't the Cornish liberation lot start blowing up bus stops in protest of being forced to be English or something?

My first memory of following the football on the radio was in the days when GWR provided the Saturday updates, a few years before the BBC took over.  The programme provided regular updates from our games, Bristol City's and Rovers'.  It was quite listenable...but anything wider than that would lose its appeal, I think.  Commentary quality aside, it would be a big step backwards if we lost the level of coverage we now have.  The BBC does a massive service to lower league football.

I turned off straight away.

It's a shame, if its anything like BBC points west it won't matter if we get promoted to the premier league. The show will be smothered in Bristol and Salisbury content.

Is it me or is the reception shit?  Only listen on match days and no matter where I am (apart from the car) reception is poor both on FM and DAB.  Radio 1 etc I have no problems with.

I've never had a problem with bbc wilts on my DAB, I can pick it up crystal clear when I worked in Bath and its crystal clear in Swindon to. Not sure what the reception is like on analogue though.

Oh well, just 'introduces' and the footy left worth listening to on BBC yocal then :(

I remember driving to work about 12 years ago and the breakfast presenters were discussing the impending merger with poxford - it wasn't until 10 or 15 minutes that I remembered it was 1st April.

As mentioned earlier the BBC announced a year ago or so that "local" radio would basically be decimated due to monetary cuts required. If I remember rightly the sports commentary side would still be OK but it has all gone quiet now so not too sure if that is still the case. At the time the BBC asked for listeners views so I said it might be better to stop paying obscene amounts of money to so called "personalities" and the myriad amount of "Managers" on the TV side, and leave the radio alone.
Do not hold out too much hope though.

My DAB in the car loses it just past Membury. Not sure about the other way as I no longer do that part of the world in my sales job.

We're all closet BBC liteners and watchers to a degree. I liked waking up to his show in the morning and I'd listen to dive time in the evening as I'm out of town for most of my working day it kinda kept me in touch with my home town and the bloke was good to listen to. now that screaming woman on in the afternoon would drive me to suicide or poke my eardrums out if I had no choice but to listen to her, god forbid.

I do find I'm not as grumpy in the mornings now I'm not listening to Mack bicker with local councillors over potholes and the new dj said yesterday that his son has jettisoned Bristol City in favour of being a Swindon fan - so the new show is growing on me.

Although traffic updates about cattle on a road just outside Collingbourne Ducis does annoy me a bit.

Title: Re: BBC Radio Swindon
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 11:50:33
The new show bored me rigid and I have nearly 0 interest in anything outside Swindon bar the route to Chippenham. I've switched to 5 live

I liked Mack arguing with councillors, its the only way I knew what the useless blighters were up to and whether they did what they said they'd do (which, surprisingly, they sometimes did).

Title: Re: BBC Radio Swindon
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 12:29:43
The problem they have - and the reason that the Swindon and Wiltshire stations split in the first place for some programmes - is that Swindon has very little to do with the south of the county, and vice versa.  Transport links between the two are poor; someone from Salisbury, for example, is much more likely to work in Southampton than they are in Swindon.  A combined Wiltshire entity doesn't really make much sense.

Politicians recognised this in the 1990s, which is why Swindon's affairs are no longer administered from Trowbridge.
