 Pivotal game in the season for me...the away form is still not convincing, and needs to improve for a shot at automatic promotion.  Shrews are decent at home and seem motivated to put one over on us + they have Marvin Morgan ;)

Be interesting to see what PdC does to avoid a repeat of Preston....whether he sticks to the same team as midweek or uses the squad to bring in fresh legs....hopefully not made from mozzarella.

Good day out today.  Great support from the Town fans and in the end a well-deserved victory.

Brooklands hotel was in a right state - going out of business fast by the looks of it - a Shrews fan told me that the landlord was buying cans from Tesco first game of the season!

The first half was generally forgettable and we seemed to be lulled in to playing their league 2 style football.  Felt for Collins when he skyed the sitter - he seemed to be trying too hard all game and wasn't coping brilliantly with the pressure.

Second half we were all over them and they should count themselves lucky it was only 1 goal.
Williams continues to look brilliant, Roberts caused untold danger on the left wing when he came on and Rooney looked useful linking with Williams & Ritchie later in the game, but the whole team acquitted themselves well.
And who would have thought the goal would come from Simon Ferry? - not that he could really have missed after the well worked movement with Ricthie, Rooney & Williams but great to see him there to put it away.

Yeah I was sitting in my car waiting to move when that all kicked off (well kicked off is a bit of an overstatement) glad I didn't have the kids with me.  It was funny when they came over going 'cmon then ya cunts' straight into the police.  Nice to see they had a grandpa with them as well who hobbled along behind them.  Bit of fun for the coppers I suppose.

Incidentally, for the first time in a long time I cant really say the ref was shit.  Didnt notice him that much.  Must have been ok.

Just got home via an expensive Burger King on The M5.

Has to be one of the worse places for parking I have ever experienced, truly shit. The home end was barely a third full and reminded me of a library. The stand to the right of us had several of the aforementioned 'mob' giving it for most of the 90 minutes, a real collection of uglyness that only Sports Direct could clothe. When the goal went in the look on their stubbled despondent faces is what makes winning away beautiful, and reminding them we are their champions seemed all that sweeter once we took the deserved lead.

The first half was largely forgettable, when Collins missed the home crowd celebrated as if they had just gone 4-0 up. I thought Collins put in a decent enough shift, the Salop crowd could learn from the Town End how to make an ex-player feel welcome a'la Charlie Austin.

In the 2nd half we simply had too much for them, our quality was evident from the moment the 2nd half began. Thought Darren Ward was a little shaky at times but I have seen worse, Miller came on and gave the midfield some testicles, Roberts came on and added some balance, but for me Andy Williams was the standout player today. His work rate was awesome and I really think we have a player approaching his prime with us, long may it continue.

Paolo looked pleased at the final whistle as did all the Town fans leaving the ground, there seemed to be a sense amongst us that this is promotion form, winning ugly, tippy tappy football, it seems we have it all in our locker at the moment.

We got back to the car which was parked at the pub, politley waved to the gathered Shrewsbury miscreants (in a Maxwell House style) and headed back to the borough of Swindon, victorious, with the moon shining down upon us.

Agree with most of what you say, but personally thought Ward was very good (bar that one weak pass that didn't reach Mceverly in the second half). I have to say he's really proving me wrong after what i thought was an awful debut against Oxford where he stumbled around like a dying camel (against a truly awful oxford attack). But in his last 3 games for us i think his defensive partnership with Mcormack has looked pretty rock solid. Certainly nothing flashy about him, apart from those appalling boots, but his positioning is absolutely superb, he intercepted so many balls/ crosses today and same with those long dangling legs against Bournemouth.

Have to say the same thing about Adam Rooney, who i similarly dismissed after that Oxford display as no better than what we've got. Link up play with Willo was excellent when he came on.

Once we'd got Miller and Roberts on second half and were playing in my opinion our strongest team (apart from Thompson at RB) we looked a completely different proposition. Can't afford another Leyton Orient style lapse against Colchester now. Collins due but would still have him in our starting eleven for shift he puts in. Onwards and upwards.

I too am over the fricking moon as I checked at full time to find out it was 0 - 0 and was happy with that. Imagine my surprise as I trawled through the match day thread!! Get in!!!!! :clap:

Just got in and haven't read all the thread. 1st half flew by but don't know why as it should of dragged! 2nd half we looked a lot more threatening than them and deserved the goal. Thought they were average at best and found their play really negative for the home team. Apart from the effort of the shrews fans to our right I didn't hear the home support all day. Swindon fans where We was were brilliant, stood up and singing throughout. Our mini bus was held back for a police escort out of the stadium car park but when a coach load of Swindon decided they were going back towards Brooklands for a punch up they let us go anyway. Met a few Swansea fans on the M5 services who were alright to be fair. Shrews don't normally give much at their place so the points were more important than the proformance today.

A great day out in the Autumn Sun, beaming down all afternoon and Si Ferry pops up with the winner! Surely there were more than the 870odd quoted as the away figure as well ?!?!

The Brooklands hotel had a shocker before the game, took nearly 30 mins to get a pint...only 3 people behind the bar!

We could have won it by 2 or 3 in the end, Roberts made a difference when he came on at half time and linked up well with Jay Mac...Personally I do worry about Ward, a misplaced pace almost cost us a goal, and I'd like to have seen T A-H continue in there but a clean sheet will tell me different so fair play to him and the backline. Williams was top notch again!

didn't get to the game today unfortunately, anyway the point of my post here is to say a bit about ward...

my take on him playing is that whilst alan mac looked brilliant at cb last term he's still learning the trade and it's maybe too much for him to be guiding younger, although more experienced, defenders through games.  we may be using this 6 month loan deal as just that to aid alan mac's development as a defender. 

the last few games ward has been the one letting the rest of the defense know where the line was and he's allowed AM to what feels more natural to him and break out a bit more.  we may well see troy come back into the side intermittently over the coming months while alan mac learns to be a proper cb, which to me seems me the most natural pairing we have in there.

as for the result - brilliant.

also the football league has just told me that oxford are now suffering their worst run of form since 1991, just a shame that fatty evans has to benefit from their charity

Thought that Williams was superb ,especially the header down for Ferry but in general,his willingness to run and drag defenders around combined with his pace marks him out as a special player.Not sure about Ward,for someone with so much experience,he gives far too many freekicks away.Great substitutions by Paolo meaning that Miller could sit back and let Ferry get involved more  and Roberts was causing problems from the off after a fairly anonymous 1st half from DaVita.Felt for James Collins who with a bit more composure after Williams had hit the post should have put us ahead in the 1st half but all in all,good performance topped off with a superb meal in an italian restaurant in Alfreton so happy days

Two words, Joe Devera. 25 isn't really inexperienced.  That's not a dig at Ward by the way, I can see some sense in bringing players with Championship experience into a league 1 club with Championship aspirations.

Just saw the Collins miss. He should have scored but was under a fair bit of pressure from an incoming defender, he wussed out a bit but it wasn't  a Ronny Rosenthal.

I personally think that Alan Mac and Troy are our best partnership.

Ward and Flint as good backup, one with experience and one with less so, but the way Troy is a bigger threat at corners and the way he can pass a ball are excellent.

The one thing though is that he does often make one mistake per game, but then so have Alan Mac, Flint and Ward in every game so far this season.

Did ok, could tell he wasn't entirely comfortable being there but dealt with most things well. Kept drifting towards the centre a bit at times.

They all think PdC been given this massive budget, but we certainly haven't gone and spent £800k on one player like Bornmuff did on Tubby, who was fucking dire last week.

Bessone is horribly one footed. Got caught out a few times but generally pretty solid... If he was up against better wingers / full backs Id be a bit more concerned but thankfully Shrewsbury weren't really up to much.

Their fans are a bitter bunch. The obligatory "Fuck off Di Canio" chant began before the game had even begun, yet he was pretty much the reason most of them were there! The chanting between their block of supporters and ours was cringeworthy, playground stuff akin to shouting "your mum". The jealousy is extraordinary, I've never seen a set of supporters with such obvious envy. Considering Di Canio has complimented them quite a lot (and rightly so, they were excellent last season) they seem to hate him an awful lot.

But anyway we were good enough 2nd half to thoroughly deserve 3 pts. Williams was class yet again and Rooney looked tidy when he came on. I would start him ahead of Collins on Tuesday. Ward is terrific in the air but he gives me a heart attack everytime he's in control! He did play a few neat, lofted through balls but generally his distribution is woeful. We're spending £200k on Troy I think we need to utilise him now.

It avoids having to admit your own team was gash in comparison and hoping we go bust sometime soon is a nice comfort blanket to suck on. Personally I take such utterings as a compliment.

 :suicide: He did ok, they seemed to play with big Morgan up front on his own but failed to get their wide men forward so Bessone was in and out of the game. Can't really remember him getting forward for us that much but like I said I think he did ok. Shrewsburys tactics were a bit strange because they seemed to sit deep but didn't seem to bust a gut on the counter attack either. Perhaps they were relying on set pieces which is different from the norm for the home team especially as they have been so Good at home. Maybe they gave us too much respect?

Shrews fans on FF didn't give themselves a hope and seemed to have written off this game before it'd even started. Bessone did get forward at times but was always inside rather than overlapping Ritchie, which in turned hindered his game a bit.

wrt to the Shrews fans; at least they gave us credit in that they said we were deserved winners. Some even said we looked a good team :)

Not bad considering we made 6 changes.

The blue & amber forum seems to have a combination of posters who spout ignorant ill-informed crap, most likely based on jealousy and some well-reasoned comments that are generally complimentary about us.

There does seem to be a running theme amongst a good number of them that we are about to go bust. :zzz:
One that made me laugh was the idea that we paid £400K for Luke Rooney.

They didn't use much imagination yesterday singing about Collins " ten grand, his only worth ten grand "  The three goals he got against Stoke was probably worth more than that. Not sure if they really dislike us that much it sounds more like a dislike of Paolo. I was similar with Crawley when Evans was in charge, now he's gone they no longer bother me.

I like the quote saying that the ref at our place bottled and if he didnt, they wouldve finished above us.

Well as the game was against us - if they had won, they'd have 3 points more and we'd have 3 points....thus wiping out the 6 point difference.

Shame about the huge goal difference

The ref did fuck it up at our place but it was outside the box anyway. Also no guarantees they would have beaten 10 men anyway. We know all about that afterall.

Think they need to get over themselves to be honest.
