Title: Shrewsbury Away
Post by: donkey on Monday, September 24, 2012, 20:17:06
Can someone who went on Saturday confirm from the Match Day Programme that Shrewsbury is pay on the day?  The website suggests it is, but isn't 100% clear.

Good for those taking kids too, £1 for under 12's and £3 for under 17's going with an adult paying £19.

Tempting. I could go and take the little one for under £20. My gran lives near Shrewsbury, so I could visit at the same time.

Those who went last year; what's their ground like? How is it for parking?

Not a great ground tbh, identical to Colchester's and in a similarly poor out of town area too.

For those of you who've forgotten, the ground is shite, parking is shite and you lost 2-1.  Don't see much changing.  8)

In case you have forgotten, we won league 2 last year and then robbed you of your best player, expect the ground and parking is still shite though

Parking was alright. Parked in that pub car park and had a great time...until the second half!

Yes they did but when you come to Swindon we'll beat the shit out of you for £10

Seeing as there has been a poor harvest you'll struggle to get enough cash to make the trip let alone the entrance fee and car parking charges.

You'll still be league two next season as well.

Lovely little town, Shrewsbury.  Lived in the area for a while as a kid.  Beautiful, unspoiled county as well (except the Telford bit.)

I loved their old ground, not so much the new stadium...

Anyone driving from Swindon got a better route than coming off at Worcester on the M5 then A roads all the way? 2 hours 19 mins allegedly

Title: Re: Shrewsbury Away
Post by: Ardiles on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 20:41:12
That's probably the best route.  You go through Kidderminster, but avoid Birmingham/Wolverhampton.  I know which I'd choose.

Spot the deliberate mistake. Mind you you could substitute the "still" for "you'll be" or you you'll still be in league one when we're in the championship.

Last time I remember going there was when they were at Gay Meadow and Kammy smacked Jim Melrose. The only other thing I remember is 'Chicken George' Lawrence (I think) cutting in from the left wing and scoring a screamer in the top left corner of the net, which was right in front of my face. It was one of those that was in the moment he lashed it. We lost 2-1

Can't have been Chicken George - he never played for Shrews.

Guessing this was the game, which suggests it was some guy called Vic Kasule

Victor Kasule was a brilliant tricky little winger never settled in England and played most of his games in chilly jocko land.

Interesting little piece on Victor Kasule here, seems he had a bit of a drink problem!

I was at the game and yes it was a cracking goal, didnt he roast Phil King all game?

I went last season so not bothered much about this.

There is a pub with a chippy next to it but it was being refurbed last year so I parked in that hotel on the roundabout but they ran out of real beer early doors.

He was on their left, so our right. Must have been Hockaday that he was roasting.

They consider themselves to be our equals, have they not spent most of their existence in League 2 with the occasional flirtation with League 1?

I'm struggling to see where they made such a statement.

Maybe I have got the wrong end of the stick

"Suspect he will get some abuse. Had he gone to someone like Sheff Utd or Preston then people would mainly accept he's moved to another (bigger) club for more money, just like Wroe and SCS

However Swindon and Di Canio clearly arent too popular amongst some of our fans so there's a bit of animosity there which adds to it"

The two recommend pubs nearest to the ground are the Charles Darwin and Brooklands. Anyone been to either of these before and which is the more popular choice?

I parked at Brooklands and then went there for a drink there. It was absolutely heaving so I'm guessing most of the 700 who went were in there!

Cheers for that, if we don't get there early enough will probably try the Darwin then. At least the forecast is good for drinking outside.

I guess they don't like Swindon because a) we beat them to the title last year, and b) we have signed thier top goalscorer.
As for not liking Di Canio, he does apear to be a Marmite character amongst opposing fans.  Personally, I think he is the best thing to happen to our club in years!

We had a nice day in Shrewsbury, I had a lovely venison and suet pudding for lunch and got some interesting beers from a deli.  We then got the bus back to the ground and watched Town win.  I like Shrewsbury.

Had a few drinks in the town centre, which had no shortage of decent boozers. Really enjoyed the game and thought our support was very vocal. We were immense at one point when the 900 or so away contingent all sang in unison. One blemish on the day was being accosted in the retail park near the ground by about 6 Shrews' fans who told me to "fuck off back to Swindon, you cunt!" Could very easily have turned proper nawty.
