Title: Fat player
Post by: thedarkprince on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 12:56:06
I'm trying to find the name of the player who returned to their club for pre-season, either last season or the one before, and looked like he'd eaten all summer.

Someone posted pictures of him in one of the matchday threads but I'm buggered if I can find it.  Can't remember if he was a Hartlepool or PNE player.

There's a convesration going on at work about fat footballers and the usual suspects are being named: Brolin; Parkin; Pressley... so wanted to throw this guy in.

It was a Hartlepool player. That's all I've got.

Micky Quinn the ex Newcastle striker was rather large, and Lee Trundle takes the buscuit...quite literally!

Oh and big Jim Stannard, I remember his having chants of "bring on the fork lift" when he got injured against us playing for Southend or Gillingham.

But Neil Shipperley would take some beating.

Ritchie Humphries is a big old boy these days....Pools seem to specialise in lardarses, back in the day Bob Newton was a fat bastard....as well as being a sort of 80's Lee Hughes.

It is, he wouldn't have been playing professional football at that size.

Tony Hicks who was our keeper for the 3 FA Cup ties against Forest in the 60's was a bit chubby. Think he ended up delivering milk.

He may well have done, but he certainly drove a ‘pop’ lorry ‘cos he delivered to our house! He drove the fastest pop lorry in the west, did our Tony.

He was a mean fast bowler too, for Blunsdon. At least, he was fast for my level of cricket even with his, er, extra weight.

He left the Town under a bit of a cloud, can’t remember the details but something about being promised he would keep his place in the team after the Forest matches but was then put back into the stiffs.

At least, that’s what his mum told my mum...

One of my all time favourite Town players was John Smith from the 69 side. What a fantastic player, could pass a ball as well as Hoddle. If he had been a bit lighter would surely have played at the highest level all his career.

As already mentioned by JJEdmunds..

One from Reg's youth - William 'Fatty' Foulke

http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/001/623/758/Foulke-sufc_display_image.jpg?1322663815

...or should that be William Fat as Foulke

The great Ernie Hunt wasn't the sveltest of players either. What was it about those days? Every team seemed to have a squat midfield schemer.

Couldn't see Paolo coping with that type of player today (from a fitness and/or visual point of view), although actually most teams at our level seem to be crying out for someone to put his foot on the ball and, with time to spare, pass to a bloke in the same colour shirt.

Yeah it was, a bit unfair but that was only  ayear after he quit playing, he now looks like this.

Ernie Hunt used to do our door to door house insurance in the 70's.

Nicknamed 6X for his penchant for the drink. He was signed permanent though not on loan.
