Title: Luke Rooney
Post by: WyvernTheatre on Friday, August 24, 2012, 11:35:40
To promote the show 39 Steps, which is coming to us next year, we filmed Luke Rooney performing 39 keepy-uppies at the County Ground yesterday. Here's the video to see if he managed it..

He should have booted it in to the Town End goal with his 40th touch instead of just catching it.  That would have been class.

Good player, but he does have a distinctive run, like both his arms are in plaster.

Nice bloke. He had agreed to come and present the end of season awards at one of my lads village clubs, but in the end PdC pulled them in for extra training just before the pre-season trip to Italy. He has promised to come down during the season.

When I see players names in TEF thread starters, I now assume they're the latest to fallout with di Canio. So could we have a sub forum for the latest news on bust ups ?

Ha! I'm exactly the same. This morning I saw threads named Luke Rooney and Tommy Miller and I immediately thought 'what have they done?'

That is all

In what sort of state would Rooney have been to try smoking weed through a telescope?  A pipe or skins, perhaps but I can imagine Paolo would have been furious.

He's gone to Burton on a month's loan. Good player, goes to show how we've improved the strength in depth since last season that he has become surplus to requirements.

Probably not a bad move for him, he is not going to get in our team at the moment, but the games will do him good.

His style is tailored for them.

I don't know how many games he played for us but it can't have been many and seemed to be slightly off the pace when he did, perhaps it's me but I don't think he's capable of anything above L2.

On his day an exciting player - but I am afraid he became too predictable and tended to drift out of games too much.  Good move, wonder if that will become a permament one in January?

He so is far behind Ritchie and Roberts in ability that his main battle is with RDV for the back up winger role, probably best for his career to move on permanently at some point in the future as well.

Good luck to him.  Ultimately, he has disappointed.  PDC would have spent the money last year with an eye on League 1 and a belief that he would be able to cut it at that level.  And, no doubt about it, he was one of Gillingham's top players.

We're a bit free & easy with the cash right now.  I hope we get something back for him when he moves on but, as with Connell, I'm not convinced that we will.

I am inclined to agree with you on this. He obviously has talent but is far too lightweight, lacks pace and his final ball is often poor, move him on to free wages for any future possible signings or loan signings.

Rooney's got the talent but he's too inconsistant and obviously lacking in confidence/form. Hopefully he can pick up some form on loan.

In his first month or so with us he was brilliant. It was after the defeat at Oxford where he went off the boil and began to become a little inconsistent. Gills fans said he would be and you would expect it given his age. I've no doubt he has the quality but he needs games to get consistent and to gain experience. This will do him some good. Mind you i'm not sure he has much of a future here at the moment given the fact he is 4th choice out wide at the moment.

I wonder if he wishes he'd stayed at Gillingham?

I heard an interesting fact the other day which came from somebody connected to the club, so I assume reasonably accurate?  Apparently we paid out £450,00 in agent's fees last season and have spent another £200,00 in cancelling contracts/paying player's off.

No the accounts are always published a year later so we won't see last seasons until next spring/summer.

Some Pikey fans reckon that whilst at Gills, when he couldn't get into the matchday 16, Luke played sunday league football under a pseudonym, what a random rumour.

I used to play in Bristol on a Sunday and we often had the Rovers youth and reserves on the Sunday circuit. I find it hard to believe a prominent player wold get away with it though.

The Shrewsbury fans really have a chip on their shoulder with us dont they, apparently they are saying that we spent £400k on Roney in January! I thought it was nearer £80k plus add ons......from the blue and amber forum...

Quote
I'm not sure he's particularly great when it comes to getting value for money for players - didn't they pay ~£400,000 for Luke Rooney in January? If he was in charge of us, I don't think he'd do well, but with a club like Swindon where he's got cash to splash I think he's a good manager.

I think they will find that fingure is a little bit wrong!

He joined on 28th September on a month's loan, think that's why.

Also, haven't you been listening to Paolo? We've got an INJURY CRISIS. The more bodies he can get in the better.

Seen a few Burton fans on Twitter saying he was OK for the first few games then just didn't get played after that. Sounds like he won't be missed much up there. Hardly inspiring for when he gets back here next week but maybe Paolo can actually play him this time.

The good form Luke Rooney is an average League 1 player, the normal Luke Rooney (I.e. the performance against Preston) is out of his depth.
