Calne. If you are looking to buy, there is a 1 bed flat currently on the market for £35k. If you want to rent a 2 bed they start around £450 per month.

otanswell is a Swindon fan, so you suggest Calne? I wouldn't suggest Calne to an Oxford fan let alone one of our own.....

For your budget, you can get a 2 bed anywhere for that (and sometimes a 3 bed). I'd always recommend the Old Town area... everything in walking distance (including bottom of town, station, County Ground), loads of pubs, cafes, food places... Old Town gardens decent for a wander, equidistant from j15 and 16 of the M4, convenient for Marlborough etc.

It's a nice place to leave live and quite reasonably priced.  :)

Its only redeeming feature was the Bacon Factory. Now that's gone, the place has gone to the dogs....

If you're interested in bland, generic, empty housing developments with no amenities, you'll find plenty in north swindon for that budget I'd imagine.

I think you'll find Calne has improved greatly over the years, from the blight of the mid 80's to the regeneration it is still undergoing today. Harris factory was quite a lump in the centre of town, I remember it well.

I find most new estates pretty shite.all built up high and on top of each other.

went with our son and his girlfriend to look around a show house on a new site the other week. From the back garden you could look into four adjacent houses windows.

If you don't mind the Parks you can get a 3 bed house for that sort of money.

Tbf the Parks aren't as bad as people think, my folks live in Park South and have had no grief at all since they moved in, their neighbours are nice bunch as well and the house and garden are nice sizes.

With lack of neighbourhood as well. We've been in our 'new' house for 5 years at Redhouse and tbh wouldn't buy new again. Love the house it's the surroundings we don't like. We are not overlooked, but it's the neighbours that annoy me. There's no respect, with parties held on regular basis especially on hot evenings. There are a lot of young families but some just don't care about that. Parking is also an annoyance.

New builds are good in the respect that you can get some brilliant deals. If you want to rent there are an abundance of rental properties in North Swindon for silly prices!

Just a mass of carbon copy houses stuck in an area with no thought imo. They did a good job with west swindon in the 80's but I cannot stand the north of the town development and wouldn't want to live there.
Got family and friends that live over there and the houses are nice enough, but it's all to compact and on top of each other.
The schooling allocation is shambolic over that side of town too

I grew up in west Swindon in the 90's and its so much better that the modern estates. Abundant parking, decent sized gardens, pubs/shops/schools/parks, and just generally feels like you get more house/space for your money.

Most parts of Calne these days are a lot nicer than Swindon. If they could bomb phelps parade (or just knock it down and start again) and do something more fitting of a town centre Calne would be a lovely little town.

We had a few places up where the old hospital was at the end of Okus Road. Not brilliant quality but it's quiet, look nice and there's a shiteload of parking.

With new builds its about maximum profit. Simple as unfortunately.

We looked at some houses in the newer areas of North Swindon last year when we had our house on the market.  Some of them were lovely, but parking being overlooked and the size of the gardens was an issue.  In the end we decided to stay put in good old Greenmeadow and extend.

The thing I hate when I ever go over that way is the constant stopping to letting cars through, because there's cars parked all over the place because a lot of the houses don't have driveways or if they have, you can only fit one car on them.

Most houses have a garage and a space. A lot of people use their garages for storage and not their loft so park on the street. It infuriates me.

We currently have our next door neighbour parked outside our living room window on the pavement when they have a space less than 10yds away. Is pure laziness. If they are still parked their tomorrow they will be blocked in.

There's a total lack of respect for neighbours in new builds. If we could move we would in a flash. Unfortunately like most we are in negative equity so just have to stick it out.

He's banned from all the pubs would be my guess.

3 good sized bedrooms, lovely family area, plenty of green space, five minutes from the town centre, 3 bed link detached (good sized garage), huge family kitchen and front and back garden. In perfect nick. Bought for £138,000 one month ago.

Whereabouts in Redhouse (roughly) are you Sippo? We're in a kind of separate mini part of Redhouse and it's fine. Get on well with the neighbours, people park where they're meant to park etc. Have to say though on the walk up to tesco's I see what you mean, cars right outside living room windows etc.  That'd do me nut in!

Good to hear the Bull's Head is still going strong.
Was one of a number of good pubs within easy walking distance of my house in the 80's.
IIRC good views of the flyover from the outside seating  :)
