Bye bye Alan I always liked you and will remember the goals you scored a bit surprised he is being moved on for nothing...DiCanio wants to get rid of the wages quickly by the sound of it.

Why aren't you?  ;D  Scared?

He is entitled to his opinion, and some of what he is saying I sort of agree with.  Surely the pro/against PDC thing has been done to death though.  While he is being successfull, people will let him get on with it.  If it starts going south then there will be a few more Yeo's come out of the woodwork.

I think the statements in the press will become more and more tedious as the season goes on though.

At which point I for one, will stand and give him a round of applause.

I like Alan and would like him to stay. I know that, through no fault of his, this aint gonna happen so won't hold it against him.

He's too slow, he takes too many chances to score a goal, I'd say some of it is down to him.

This. Don't get me wrong, I liked Connell, I liked his work rate and he's a nice guy, but I was never quite as impressed as everyone else by his goal scoring ability.

To be fair to Connell he got into positions to score goals, the problem was he missed too many of them.

He may be able to cut it in league 1, or he may not.

Obviously Paolo doesn't believe that he will and as its his decision then that's good enough.

I wish Connell all the best, he took plenty of shit from Paolo ( as well as plenty of praise) & never once (publicly) complained. So wherever he ends up good luck to him (except for when he plays against us)

Agreed, I thought he was ok, he worked his arse off. He got into good positions but fluffed one to many chances. Thanks Connell for all your hard work and good luck.

Likewise, no issue with the bloke. Most players that were.. I don't really want to say treated because he wasn't treated badly... but if most players had his experience last year they'd have been kicking their toys out of the pram in no time. Connell didn't, he stuck at it and earned himself a champions medal, fair play, I'll remember him fondly but I don't think he'll be a huge loss.

He did work hard though, but he wasted more chances then he put away. Thats the reason why I thought he was ok.

He scored some important goals at important times - if only he had taken that chance at Wembley

Don't dislike him or his ability - there are just better players.

No, when I said

what I actually meant was

If I had wanted to say

Then I would have typed

I wonder what his goalscoring record would be like as a first choice striker? I don't think he's league one starting line-up quality and that's a problem because he had loads of substitute appearances last season without really changing the game too much.

I'd be happy for him to stay but in league one he'd be a squad player.
I wouldn't blame Connell for staying here to pick up a better salary but he'll need to work his hardest to get into the first team squad and put himself on show for when he does eventually move. I think Paolo's trying to say think about career longevity over being better off for one year.

I do think Paolo is very honest in his interviews, too honest really. He's like a journalists wet dream, ask a question and you'll get more than the answer you wanted.

Agree with this 100%.  I really don't understand the need for the comments.  I would have thought Connell is capable of making a decision on his opinions.

Personally i think that Connell has been a little harshly treated.

He never once threw his toys out of the pram when subbed even when it seemed he got a raw deal.

Not my favourite player by any means but i if he stays and picks up his wages then i would say fare play...he earned them.....unlike others who wimped off when the going got tough.

As for PDC's comments.....he gets asked a question...he just answers it...simple really.

Not sure how this is harsh treatment.  Seems open & honest to me.
"Thanks for your service last season; it's much appreciated but we're signing players who are expected to be chosen above you, so it's best for you to find another club."
No place for sentiment here.  As you say he could stay and see out his contract but that's not likely to be the best result for anyone.

Connell himself ditched Grimsby after only a season, just as we're doing with him.

He showed no loyalty to his employer at the time. Why should we be any different to him?

He's a decent striker in League 2, but would be bang average in League 1. Last season he scored some important goals but he was never prolific. Met him a few times and he's a really nice guy but in football it doesn't work like that, hope he get's a good move and goes to a club that will play him regularly.

Well it is for him really.....who in a division lower or indeed our division would match his contract?

As i say he was top scorer for us last season and yes he wont be playing for us again hence my reason for saying its a bit harsh.
If he stays and picks up his wages....i for one wouldn't blame him as he earned it on last years showing.

Should we not have been looking to recoup some of the £100k we spent on him? Top scorer for the L2 champs should have commanded something?

I am surprised.  Like you say for the top scorer of the elague 2 champions last year we could have got most of that £100k back.

Just goes to show how desperate PDC is to get him off the wage bill, so he must have someone lined up.

Title: Re: Adver News: Time for Connell to cut and run?

I suspect he earns more around £100k pa and if we were to demand £25k for him and no one takes him, we're £100k worse off than if we'd got rid of him for nothing. Yes it's not great to lose whatever it was we actually paid for him, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not worth worrying about.

It could be argued that we have more than recouped what we paid for him as a result of his significant contribution to last seasons success :pint:
