Title: Europe
Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, June 29, 2012, 14:09:34
Hello

I'm going to go around europe next year on the train, inter-railing. Has anyone ever done that/something similar, and got any advice. Plan is (roughly)

Amsterdam
Brussels
Paris
Lyon
Geneva
Milan
Venice
Ljubolla
Zagreb
Budapest
bratislava
vienna
prague
krakow
berlin
hamburg
kopenhagen

Spening about two days in each, with a few more in the interesting places (Berlin, Milan). Looking to go in April, so i can watch football (Plan to be in Hamburg for a St. Pauli match), planning around 50 days

So yeah, any advice on what to plan/expect in general?? I've only ever spent about 10 hours abroad in my life, in France. I went to a hypermarket and a bread factory. It was rubbish, so need help!

I've been to about half of those places - all of them interesting.  Prague, Vienna and Krakow are my favourites though.

I don't think that was helpful.  Sorry.

Have you heard Europe's new stuff? It's a bit different and, dare i say it, not bad. Not good by any stretch of the imagination, but not awful

I saw Europe last year. They were great fun.

Last Look at Eden is actually quite good. Not lyrically, but they sure can play a riff.

Milan is, with the exception of the actual centre, just a big industrial city. High end shopping and nice architecture around the Cathedral and La Scala, but hordes of Albanian child pickpockets.

If you meet a Russian man in Amsterdam who tells you about a hostel near Bratislava with lots of beautiful women; don't listen to him.

Yeah, Milan and Paris are only really in there to tick them off the list. An initial calendar puts me in milan at a weekend too though, which is good from a football perspective.

Split and Dubrovnik (especially) were very nice, although Dubrovnik doesn't have a railway station so you might struggle. Was only in Zagreb briefly but it didn't look very nice from what I saw.

I went to Milan with work in Feb and it is indeed all industrialised. It does have it's own Chinatown which took me by suprise though.

10hrs abroad in your entire life? I thought you were as middle class as me Davey baby, don't tell me you grew up on a diet of Butlins and camping and whatever else roughians do for their holidays?

All my holidays were family ones to devon/cornwall. They were shit and dull. Never been on a 'proper' holiday with mates, because we're all too poor and rubbish to organise anything. Even this voyage is a largely solitary one.

I used to be STFC dave, untill I got drunk and asked for it to be changed

There was a thread on here about Copenhagen a few days ago if that's any help.

I'd recommend Oslo :-)

You're probably right, yep. I'm just trying to get my cut fees from the Norwegian tourist board.

From experience on a stag weekend don't bother with Geneva, its expensive and shit!

Chamonix however from the same weekend was great, not sure of you can train that though.
