Title: Favourite away day
Post by: kerry red on Monday, June 11, 2012, 12:06:32
Doesn't have to be a high profile cup game or important League tussle - but, for whatever reason, it was just a good day out.

For a laugh, loads of beer and a great outcome - Tranmere away in the play-offs was a hoot.

Any away game in London I enjoy, but Spurs in the PL was a good 'un

Also had a good day, fuck knows how, away at Hull.

The FA Cup game at Fulham a couple of seasons ago, because it was the first time I took the kids to an away game. They had a great time and still talk about it now.

don't really do 'away days' as such as the old man and i usually just drive there and back, occasionally have a pre match pint if we're early.  we did the weekend in plymouth though last season and stayed in a small village just outside, the local pub had a fantastic ale on and the food was out of this world good

Brentford away a couple of seasons ago, we won 1-0.
We went in eight different pubs that day, looking forward to that again next season :)

That was an immense night, beauty of a free kick from Gurney.

Tough to pick a favourite but my first away win was special. The 1-0 win at the Slave Traders in 2000 when Reeeeeeeves scored the winner in injury time. Must have been at least my 10th attempt at seeing an away win but it was worth the wait.

also, england in barcelona against andorra.  terrible game but 11 of us had a great day otherwise, including me going arse over tit in the main square in front of a couple of thousand english fans - 'she fell over...' followed by some hottie on a balcony getting her tits out for us

The Relegation Wake at Loftus Road, April 1994.  Always enjoyed going there, but especially that time.  And Charlton for the 2nd leg of the Play off semis a few years ago was special.  As was Northampton away last season.

For football reasons - Charlton away. But only after the penalty shootout.

Leeds away in the league was pretty special, we dicked them 3-0 and my lad (first away game) was singing the "we're going to West Ham, you're going to Dagenham" song most f the way down Elland Road.

The cup game mentioned above was ace too, we'd have won it if bart hadn't been incorrectly sent off. Gutting.

Stoke away 97/98, first league game at the Britannia, 1-0 down with about 10 mins to go and 2 goals in a minute to win it. Scott Leitch coming from absolutly nowhere to clear a certain goal off the line. Great day out too.

radebe should have been sent off too, how come for two identical fouls was one a booking but the second wasn't? he won the corner that robbo scored from

My favourite away game was against Notts County back in 2000 went with a group of mates we all turned 16 and we were completly shitfaced can't remeber much of the game but it was my first away game.

Edit: Lecister away in the cup was a good one as well

Accrington last season was brilliant, so was Torquay.  :pint: And all your obvious ones, Charlton (The 4-2? 4-1? Win on Sky bank holiday monday was a great one as well as the play-offs, not so much the 2-2 on boxing day!), Leeds, Southampton.

Too many to choose from:

Leeds away 3-0 and the carling cup defeat were pretty memorable for me, also love any London away day (Brentford 1-0 the other year/Wimbledon this past season), Southampton 1-0 away and Bristol City 1-0 when Reeeeeeeeves scored an 87th minute winner.....out of all of those I'm going for Bristol City 1-0 win (my first ever local derby away game)

There's been a few, but none of them for footballing reasons.

Cheltenham away in 07/08.
Numerous trips to Walsall, but the limo trip was the best.
Leeds away the first season they were relegated.
Minibus trips to Hereford and Franchise.
Histon in the FA Cup.

Any away win! Can't beat the feeling! Particularly if it's against a "bigger" club. Southampton and Leeds in recent seasons have been pretty special.

For days out, you can't beat a good northern trip on a ridiculously early train.

With away trips the day out can often over-shadow the football.

For example the JPT final was an immense day out, we had a great party in the rumba bus on the way and even though we were all a bit dejected on the way back there were still some quality moments. I said I wouldn’t organise another minibus after that but I may give it another go this coming season as it was brilliant fun.

Ones that haven’t been mentioned from our recent history:

Franchise at the hockey stadium, Fred and Tail’s being brilliant entertainment.
Lincoln when everyone (except Gary Stanley, JFW and Zoe) dressed up in silly orange hats and we camped in a tent in someone's back garden.
Hereford when Millom cranked up the crowd.
Peterborough – Cracking atmosphere: Darren Ferguson, your old man’s a cunt.
Leyton Orient the day Wilson was confirmed as manager. Atmosphere was very positive after hearing that news before the game.
I’ve always had a good one at Walsall as well.

Talking of undeserved wins, Charlton away in 99/00, we scored after about 5 mins and they battered us for the next 85, hitting post, bar, off the line, keeper saves the lot. They won the league and we finished bottom, but just goes to show that football isn't played on paper.

Charlton fans kept chanting how they were top of the league (which they were). We responded in kind with "we are bottom of the league" and out sung them for 90 minutes. A highlight of a forgettable season.

I think Charlton needed to win that one to beat their all time wins at home in a row record and up popped Steve Cowe and ballsed it up for them  :)

Other away days -
Wembley play off wins !
Brentford when we went down to 9 men
Last visit (I think) to the Goldstone where we won 3-1
Leeds (league cup)
Arsenal in the premiership - easily the most pissed I've ever been at football !

AFC Wimbledon away this year was a highlight, if only for the 'i wanna go back to the titty bar' chant, the game itself tho was complete gash!!

serious personal highlight tho was early 2000's away at Bristol City, winnig 1 - 0, happy memories.

Leeds  in the  cup

Stoke 2001 I think ( when we just stayed up)

and Leicester this year because it was my lads first away game

Brighton , 1990  it pissed down with rain all game I think we were 3-1 down at half time and got a draw out of it

The one's that stay in the memory are Stoke (we beat them 2-1 I think - it was the day they opening the Britannia); Liverpool 2-2 in '93 was ace and Birmingham (6-4) in '92. I think the very best was Blackpool in 95?, when we got promoted to the First Division - just a brilliant day out.

But that was their promotion party.

I did take this piss quite a bit after that, asking why they didn't make any noise at their promotion party.

Deffo the 4-6 at St Andrews. Maskell's 20th of the season won me a bet, and trying to get back to New Street without smiling was fun.

Tranny in the POs comes close. I've never been so nervous at a game. A Tranny-supporting friend who had promised to put me up for the night abandoned me, so I cadged a lift with some Town fans (one of whom was a spit of Mussolini - not seen him around for ages), who dropped me off at Jct 15 of the M6 from where I walked home to Stoke being blinded by HGVs zooming along the A500.

When did we play Rovers at Ashton Gate?

April 1987, a 4-3 win.

The thing I remember most about the day was a group of City fans that were in the Dolman stand (which had been allocated to Swindon), and after kicking off in there were taken out & put in the Grandstand (which had been allocated to Rovers), and then proceeded to kick off in there as well before being ejected by the OB.

This was the good old days when instead of getting a banning order for going in the wrong end (so to speak), all you got was turfed out & chucked in with your own fans

Bristol City away in 1987, last game of the season, a Peter Coyne goal stopped them reaching the Play-offs, nearly 20,000 at Ashton Gate.  A very hot and happy day.

Selhurst Park against the Gills stands out in Play off final

Sheff United away first game in the prem league 1993, great turn out from town fans, forget the result!

Wembley 1990 and 1993 as well

On the way up to the game our Son was convinced we were going to win 4-0, we thought he was just bonkers & told him so. Afterwards in that highly sarcastic tone you get from teenage boys he apologised that it was only 3-0.

Was fucking brilliant though, just a shame the season ended in disappointment.

Leeds or Charlton away in 2010. Charlton just for the feeling after Darby slotted his pen home and Leeds just for the pure satisfaction of tonking Leeds at Elland Road and then mocking them with their own chant. Great day, I was sure we'd go up after that... oops!!

Winning 4-0 vs shitty at Trashton Gate in 91, awesome game with us playing some of the silkiest football ever.

Winning 7-0 away at Kettering in the FA cup in 83 (our biggest away win since 1925) in one of the most hate filled atmospheres at a Town game I have witnessed.

Winning 6-4 away at Brum in 92 after being 4-1 down 5 mins into the 2nd half, brilliant.

Drawing 1-1 at Arsenal in the QF of the League Cup in 79 and outplaying the home side for long periods against a team that had 9 internationals with about 10k Town fans there on a Tuesday night.

Brum 6-4, the result that proved we had what it took to go up.

Tranmere po semi, the best set of supporters I have ever seen (and I mean the Tranmere fans) talk about gracious in defeat.

QPR a few years ago, last day of the season, lost 1-0, they went up. Great day out with mates.

Pre-season Calne matches. Used to love watching Town matches at Bremhill View, so close to the players, pitch invasions at the end to grab autographs, what it's all about, as a young teen.
