Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:11:24 ...Over the same period as Talk Talk ('82-'86) were the absolute bees bollocks.
82 - New Gold Dream 84 - Sparkle In The Rain 86 - Once Upon A Time Saw them at the MK Bowl in 86 and was blown away. Saw them again at Cardiff Arms Park in 89 and was very disappointed. Had they changed? Or had I? Or both? Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:15:26 I think exactly the same OST.
I saw them on the Saturday and Sunday at MK in 86, thought they were excellent. Once Upon a time is my fave album of theirs. Saw them at the NEC Birmingham in 89, Gun were supporting them, and I thought it was poor basically, there were too many extended songs and It put me off them a bit. Line Up hadn't changed as far as I know, it wasn't you, it was them. Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:18:57 Hmmm...That's what I suspected. They got too fucking up themselves. Shame really.
Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:21:18 Yeh, it is a shame. I saw U2 at MK in 85 and they were about the same level of fame as Simple Minds around that period, Simple Minds may have been a bit ahead even. One Bands career went one way and the other Band the other!
And yes you're right they did get too up themselves, can't remember what the 89 album was called but I didn't think much of it at the time. Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:28:29 Simple Minds and U2 were indeed very much 'neck and neck' for a few years in the popularity stakes. You seemed to have to like one but not the other. I was very much in the Simple Minds camp.
But then sanity set back in, Weller released Stanley Road, I got back on the straight and narrow, kicked the stadium bands into touch and life returned to normal 8) Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Spencer_White on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:29:37 Simple Minds - Poor mans Tears For Fears!

Are you sure that you two aren't my long lost triplet brothers??? When I went to see Simple Minds in Germany (with Talk Talk as support) in '86, it was on one of those MGP coach trips (Mead Gould Promotions? Methinks), Radio 1 was on. I remember the DeeJay saying "and that was Simple Minds, the best band in Great Britain. Now I'm going to play the the best band in these islands..." and he put U2 on. Needless to say we booked up another MGP trip to see them at the Point in Dublin about a month later. I agree, Simple Minds did lose the plot, but then U2 did around the time of The Fly etc... Title: Simple Minds... Post by: TalkTalk on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:43:59 Hey, just remembered that Cactus World News supported SM too. Remember them? They were good. Still got them on vinyl...
Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:44:39 I always wanted a brother as well, had two older sisters.
Title: Simple Minds... Post by: spacey on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:46:04 Oh dear :?

Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:49:16 they've got 7 kids between them, too late I'm afraid.
Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:49:36 When I saw SM at MK they were supported by:
In Tua Nua - Very good The Waterboys - Fucking superb The Bangles - Shit. Went down like the peverbial lead balloon The Cult - Fucking superb At Cardiff they were supported by: Texas - Charlene Thingy was on the rag - enough said Can't remember the other support acts. Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:51:59 I'm normally prety good at remembering support groups, but I couldn't have told you a single one from MK in 86. And I'm gutted I can't remember the Cult playing, "Electric" is one of my favourite albums.
The worrying thing is I was there both days. Title: Simple Minds... Post by: spacey on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:52:22 Quote from: "Bedford Red" Quote from: "spacey" Oh dear :? I had to stay behind for some reason. I think it was because I was chasing their sisters while they were at the concert... Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:53:41 Ok, it was a bit late at night to spot that!
Nothing wrong with nostalgia and 80's, well some of it anyway. It reminds me of when I was in my peak (I think). 8) Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! You must have been seriously pissed/stoned/both to not remember The Cult. They kicked some serious bottom. Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:56:21 Even more worrying I don't think It was that either, I know I was definately there though. Could just be my memory which isn't what it used to be.

The eighties were great if you picked your music carefully..? Title: Simple Minds... Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:59:28 They were very, very good. They played most the track from Electric. I think a fair number of people had gone to see The Cult specifically which created a superb atmosphere.
Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 23:59:51 There was some real bad stuff in the eighties (Wham etc) but there was a lot of decent stuff around as well.
Say 80's to most people and you get Wham, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club etc, that's all they remember it for musically. Title: Simple Minds... Also when Lou Macari took over and the good days came back, well from 84-85 onwards anyway. Title: Simple Minds... Title: Simple Minds... Post by: Piemonte on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, 09:30:02 I fucking hate simple minds, I was forced to listen to their souless stadium rock drivel in the back of my dads car though numerous long road trips in my childhood.
And British Bulldog was ace. as was playing footy in the playground with a tennis ball, about 20 a side 8) bags for goalposts Title: Simple Minds... No fucking chance! Fair point Sonic. In my defence it was late when I posted it and I couldn't recall much else from that year. And it did have "The Reynolds Girls" I'd rather Jack, which must rank in the top 10 worst ever singles. But any year with the Stone Roses debut album in I can't argue with. Title: Simple Minds... What next? You have to wear a wet suit when you have a bath??? Atually, that reminds me. All houses built in this country are now going to have something fitted to the water supply so the water does not get too hot and people don't get scaulded. FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
