If someone put Crewe ahead of my country I'd hope he'd never represent the country again. Very short term view by Billy I think.  The current apathy being shown towards international football is sad I think. International football should be what it's all about.

Think Billy was poorly advised. You're a young lad, playing in the 4th tier of the English league and you get a chance to go with your senior squad to the states. Bloody hell just for the networking opportunity he should have gone.  Idiotic decision.

He'd be lucky. Just fed up with youth players, why moan about it? The lad doing all he can to expose himself, also he feels he should just be able to walk into our first team. Cannot imagine Paolo would have offered him a contract, completely disrespected the honour of representing his country for the chance to sit on the bench of a half filled Wembley. Enjoy your medal Billy.

Obviously in hindsight it was the wrong thing to do, but what if Crewe were 2-0 down and he bagged a hatrick in the final 10 mins? Then he would've been vindicated and felt like god.

Either choice was a gamble, it's just unfortunate that now we can all see it was the wrong one.

If he'd scored 10 in the match the truth is it's still the 4th tier of English football, and so in the grand scheme of things isn't that important. To be considered good enough to be invited to the senior squad is huge.  Club v country on a premier league basis I can understand, 4th division club v country is not even a difficult decision to make, whether it's Crewe, Swindon, Oxford, whoever, country should always come first.

Chance of playing at Wembley? - yes
Chance of playing for Wales? - no

I'd have chosen Wembley.

Getting on for Wales isn't the point. He'd have been training with the new Welsh management watching, he'd have been mixing with other Welsh internationals. Contacts are key in this game and sitting on a sunny Wembley bench isn't going to get you far in the long run.

As I say I think this was a decision made on potential short term gain, rather than a benefit for the long term. And unfortunately it back fired.

I don't disagree, but maybe he was trying not to piss off Crewe in order to try and get a contract there.

Still he will have to see if it harms his long term international chances. Not very often these chances present themselves to players who have 3/4 of a season division 4 experience.

He has more chance of another international call up than playing at Wembley again. It's a tough choice but I see why he chose Wembley.

Exactly.  I know your day to day job is important but getting called up by your country whilst playing at this level should have been a no brainer.

While i agree with that,what i would say is contracts are just as key.If he was here on a 3 year deal i think he would of gone but tbf to the lad he was playing for a contract somewhere.I am sure the powers that be will understand

Understand that DRS, have to finally add that I'm coming from the angle of being a huge international football fan. Love it, and the idea of representing my country would pretty much be the ultimate dream of mine. Yeah playing for a club would be great, but standing there belting out the national anthem and then playing for your country, nothing would beat that.

Training with Wales and maybe making a 48 second cameo at the end of a pointless meaningless game wont pay the bills or earn you any money for the next 2 to 3 years. Billy has to look after himself, so that means doing all he can he earn himself a decent professional contract.

As for club or country, no contest - club every time.

Speaking as a fan, yes I would definitely rather see Swindon a sucess than England....but if I was a player, can't say i'd agree

Don't understand why this is causing so much debate? Does noone think that Bodin (or his father) got in touch with the Welsh FA to explain the situation and ask advice on what he should do or what the repercussions might be?

Billy Bodin may have had opportunities as the son of Paul but he's definitely not looked out of place as a professional footballer thus far.

I think Billy played 6 minutes of football in all 3 of the play off games.
