GLENN HODDLE EXCLUSIVE: I don't think I ever played such attractive football as I did with Swindon

GLENN Hoddle still rates promotion to the Premier League with Swindon Town as one of the best of his many considerable achievements.

Enjoyed this. You don't often see Hoddle speak of his time and Swindon - and he does so in a very fond way. I've felt in the past that we weren't all that much of a big deal for him - and not seen him in a particularly positive light as a result. Watching the old documentary for instance – I don’t really associate what he was then with the pundit on Sky now.  Reading that, perhaps I was wrong. A good read – and would be good to see him back in management.

I think Glenn has massively suffered from a few ill-advised (to put it mildly) comments (who are we to judge in that regard now?) and a general reputation of being a bit of an oddball.  Its a shame, because he did well with us and Chelsea, and his England team played better, cleverer football than any have done since.  His other spells as a manager may not have gone brilliantly but I think he still has something to offer.

Great memories of those times, soured a little for me by the way he jumped ship. If he had stayed for another season our recent history may have been a lot different.

Was watching the Play off final again on ESPN the other day. All very wierd with Bates in the crowd and everyone knowing he was off to Chelski. I agree that he was sacked by England for non football reasons when in hindsight his record for England was pretty good. Much easier life and no barbs from the press doing punditry!

Well the bit about being relegated because of the Brian Hillier/Lou Macari betting thing was incorrect.

Not sure what else was though  :hmmm: (although that on its own is a big enough error in itself)

Without going back over it I remember something about being relegated to the third tier of english possible and then promoted to the Premiership...which as the space inbetween was only one season would have been impossible.

I had a word with Glenn Hoddle at Wentworth a few years ago,he was there with Ruud Gullit and i thought he would be pissed off with me for interupting him...couldn't be further wrong.
Spoke of his time at Swindon with affection and spoke highly of John Gorman.
People forget the players he brought to the club for peanuts and made them great players.
Always thought he should be coaching the English side...not managing.

With Ossie, we went up to the top tier via the play offs, were the relegated two divisions a few days later by the Football League and then on appeal to the FA, were promoted back from the third tier to the second tier where we had been a few weeks earlier before the play off final success.

Up two tiers and down two tiers in a few weeks

A lot of beer, a lot of cold sweat and a lot of anger.
