Police have shot a suspected suicide bomber near a tube station in south London.

Marksmen opened fire near Stockwell Tube station as passengers were evacuated.


Passenger Briony Coetsee said: "We were on the Tube and then we suddenly heard someone say `get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots."

Sky News Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "There is no word on whether he has been killed or simply injured."

If the suspect is confirmed to be a suicide bomber, it would mark the fifth attempted terrorist attack on London in less than a day.

The is thought to have been either stepping on to the train or was on the platform.

Brunt said: "He was probably shot in the head. There is no confirmation of that."

Police have been given orders to shoot to kill if they believe someone is about to detonate a bomb.

Fair play to the met.  Although it is slightly worrying that a "suspected bomber was shot in the head".  I think this means it'd be best if you travel by tube don't take a ruck sack, especially if you're an electrician, could be dangerous.

The bloke was obviously dodgy as he's been under police surveillance since yesterday. If he was a law abiding citizen he wouldn't have ran when questioned by the police. I think in this instance the police did all they could, they couldn't take any risks

The bloke ran on to a tube and didnt listen to Police instructions.He would have been warned more than once and the police had no other choice but to shoot him.I 100% support them.

Reports that he had a bomb belt with wires dangling.  That I imagine would seem slightly suspiscious to highly trained professionals guarding against terrorism.  Maybe.

You can't justify people being shot just on suspicion! The man who was shot today was clearly dodgy and must have been under police surveillance, but the way you phrased that was almost as if you were suggesting that the police should shoot anyone foreign who look dodgy and happen to be carrying a bag.

I think the police had no alternative other than shooting him, so in that respect I support them. I'm just worried about normal citizens developing a vigilante style mindset and taking the law into their own hands. I don't want this country to turn into America.

The fact he was shot at what eye witnesses have described as point blank range five times means they where clearly going for a severe incapacitation or kill.

Have to presume that he was a high risk especially down on the tube.

Hopefully serve as a severe warning that the security forces mean business.

I heard a security analyst say today that the guys who shot him weren't coppers. They aren't trained to plug civilians like that. Must have been SAS or similar. They knew who he was.

Apparently he was already on the ground when they fired five shots.  Must have been high risk and suspected he potentially had some sort of device.

There were some controversial reports in the paper this morning. Apparantly one witness claims  that the Police didn't identify themselves as Police to the suspect and only put on their Police caps after the bloke ran.
Some report that the bloke (a Brazilian with poor English) panicked and ran when shouted at by blokes (plain clothed police officers) with guns.
I think this will be come a very controversial issue. I agree with the shoot to kill policy but I can see the Police getting a lot of stick which could hamper their judgement in the future and damage morale

I think the police were right in their actions. Some points to consider:

1. He came out of a house which was being surveyed be police which was known to be linked to the attempted bombings on the 21st.

2. It was a hot day, and the chap was wearing a long heavy coat.

3. When the police gave chase he panicked and jumped railings and tried to get on a train. Considering past events you don't try and get on a train.

4. The police would've shouted police at somepoint. They're not gangsters but highly trained officers doing a very difficult job.

5. If they had any doubt that he was a threat, then shots to the head is the only possible way due to impacts on the suspected package.

6. Fair enough the police got it wrong this time, and I feel for the victims family, but if it was a bomber and the police refused to shoot then more people would've been killed.

I conclusion, we can not live in fear. We can not let these nasty evil terrorists win.

According to a witness they only shouted ''stop, get on the floor''.  
I find this hard to believe that they didn't shout ''Police'' (maybe the witness was confused). But reports like this will effect the publics support for the Police and damage their morale which could affect their judgemnet - if they're getting a lot of bad press will they hesitate to shot when chasing a suspect?
