Title: New HDD
Post by: sonicyouth on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 11:48:22
Bad time to have to buy a new HDD but one of my old 500GB Seagates is dying very quickly.

Thoughts on this as a replacement or any other suggestions?

All I know is when I was helping a mate out some months back I told him to wait because the prices had gone through the roof. They're looking cheaper now and I used to love Seagate. I think as long as you avoid Hitachi/IBM Deskstars (a personal hate of mine) you're probably good.

Although I think you should buy a solid state. They're good. :toocool:

Unless it's for the OS I wouldn't bother, as sonic is looking at a 2tb guess it's for storage. Is the sata controller a 3 sonic?

Samsung Spinpoints are rather good too

I've got a 128GB SSD for my OS and my motherboard is indeed SATAIII.

The 2TB will be to store all my music, films, games and porn :)

Ordinarily I'd wait for prices to come down much further but I haven't got enough space to back everything up before the drive dies

I've got a 1TB deskstar in my NAS. Hasn't caused me any problems, unlike my Samsung F3.

They're probably very good, I just have a phobia of them. I think I went through 3 in a year and then lost 250GB from a backup because one kicked the bucket. In fairness the last drive I lost was a Toshiba, but I think that was also called a Deskstar, or something similar, which doesn't help. :)

Shouldn't make any difference, surely? It would just operate at a lower speed.

my HDD is failing in my macbook pro so i've purchased a new one (moments XT 500gb) but then i realised that my HDD is under warranty!
