Title: LMA - 1,000 Club
Post by: Dozno9 on Monday, February 6, 2012, 20:25:15
The LMA list 19 managers past and present that have achieved 1,000 English club games. I just wondered, without cheating, how many people would know who they were?

Corrected it for you.

And yes, I'm struggling beyond about 5 or 6.

Nothing wrong with a bit of a quiz, although the want for education frightens some people.  ;D

Those 3 are indeed there, I only got 8.

I imagine there'll be some old schoolers in there like Busby, Shankley, Robson (or does abroad not count?).

Despite mocking this, it's a good'un.

How about Hodgson? He must've racked up a fair few for Malmo, Inter, etc.

Fair enough but I wouldn't have guessed Coppell.

He's been around a fair old while though and despite some odd short spells, he's generally been in a job. Although Wiki say 988 games!

Graham Turner was Hereford manager for what, 15 odd years - so he must have clocked up almost enough just for them. Still going at Shrewsbury.

No Moyes, the other 3 are fairly hard tbh. Names you would have heard of (albeit one for me) but spent more time in the lower leagues.

To be fair, he had stopped managing before I was even born!

There's quite an eclectic mix of clubs he managed... Yeovil, Orient, Roma!, QPR, Luton, Fulham, Bournemouth.

He was the character that "Ron Manager" was based on in the fast Show.

Yes, I read his wiki as well.

Being in my mid to late 40's I remember Alec Stock as a manager up against us and TBH its common knowledge that he was the basis for Ron Manager because Paul Whitehouse has said that in EVERY interview he has ever had about the sketch.

A lot of football managers used to talk in that strange accent, trying speak “proper” but not quite getting there. Was the Ron Manager character derived from memories of seeing Alec Stock on TV?
Yes, when I worked at Hackney Council me and a mate used to do impersonations of him all the time. “Enduring image” seemed like the sort of thing he would say and “he took that with aplomb”. No one outside football would ever use a word like “aplomb”.They dug out a clip of him for The Fast Show night and he was great, he said “Well, you know, the goal’s gone in, England are on the march, the bunting’s out isn’t it, the cakes are there...” It’s the empire and all that: “We like Gandhi, as a person, but we’re celebrating England aren’t we?” I love saying “association football” as well.
