Title: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: juddie on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:06:35 The rule is that you can't pick a player who played say, less than 20 games. Which rules out the Heiselbergs of this world.
Harder than you think! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: DV on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:10:13 Fjortoft .
Pericard. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: jutty274 on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:10:54 The best has to be Fjortofft & the worst Juan Cobain/ Eric Sabin
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Abrahammer on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:13:54 Fjortoft naturally but other than him it has to be Migs
Aljofree Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: horlock07 on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:16:32 Fjortoft naturally but other than him it has to be Migs Aljofree Aljofree is from Manchester - was woeful though! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: DRS on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:17:59 Best - Fjortoft
Worst- Dossevi Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: STFCFORLIFE on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:19:23 BEST- Fjortoft
WORST- Casal :D Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: juddie on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:20:53 Pre-fjortoft I was thinking Dave Mitchell.
Agree re: dossevi. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Abrahammer on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:22:23 Aljofree is from Manchester - was woeful though! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: THE FLASH on Monday, January 30, 2012, 13:56:08 Best is fjortoft
Worst is Atiku and that Czech bloke who never turned up Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Peter Venkman on Monday, January 30, 2012, 14:01:39 Does scottish count as foreign ? I can understand Paolo di Canio more than I can understand Simon Ferry! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: LucienSanchez on Monday, January 30, 2012, 14:12:08 Best (although not in the strictest sense...): Nijholt or Van Der Linden
Worst: I want to say Cobian, but he didn't play 20 games. Erm, in fact every shit foreign signing i can think of never made 20 appearances! Suppose i have to go Dossevi to meet the requirements, he was worse than Pericard for me. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Processed Beats on Monday, January 30, 2012, 15:37:00 Fjortoft was before my time, so of the johnny foreigners I've seen it would have to Commingues or Brezovan (pre-injury).
Worst is definitely Dossevi. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: WR5 on Monday, January 30, 2012, 15:41:04 Best Fjortofft
Worst Sabin Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: luckyluke699 on Monday, January 30, 2012, 16:28:57 Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: cheltred69 on Monday, January 30, 2012, 21:18:50 Looking back over the years, I'd categorise them as:
Good Fjortoft; Invincibile; Nijholt; Mitchell; Fallon; Lescinel; Brezovan; vd Linden; Miglioranzi; Commingues; Talia (possibly); DeVita (maybe) Not Sure! Cuervo; Darras; Lorenzo; Griemink; Zaaboub; Risser (some of these here because I didn't really see enough of them to judge) Poor Dossevi; Sabin; Pericard; Shakes; Kanyuka; Nalis Thankfully most of the rubbish over the years have made less than 20 appearances (but still too many in a number of cases) Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Saxondale on Monday, January 30, 2012, 21:21:24 I dont know why but I really liked Nestor Lorenzo. And like many others Dossevi has been one of the biggest disasters in my mind. More the expectation than anything else. Thought he was going to tear the league a new one, but disappeared up his own one.
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Peacocks-Lucky-Coat on Monday, January 30, 2012, 21:55:19 I always thought Nalis was pretty decent.
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Batch on Monday, January 30, 2012, 22:01:26 Nalis was pretty decent, unfortunately it was a few years before we got him. His legs had gone.
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Arch Stanton on Monday, January 30, 2012, 22:16:13 Best - Fjortoft
Worst -Marko Tuomela (well, he definitely didn't play 20 games, probably only 20 minutes), Adrian Bakalli? Although he only managed one game, and what a game that was, yet another tactical masterstroke by Mr Andy King. So to play by the rules - Sabin (Made Dossevi look like Maradona) he had speed and absolutely nothing else. He then turned out for the yellow filth which makes him worse than Hitler. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Madrobin on Monday, January 30, 2012, 22:17:23 Best: Jan, naturally.
Worst: So many possibilities. I'd have to go for Griemink, if pushed. Did Cuervo play more than 20 games? Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Nijholts Nuts on Monday, January 30, 2012, 22:40:32 Best: Jan the Man
Worst: Alan O'Brien / Drossevi / Pericard Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: radicalbyte on Monday, January 30, 2012, 22:49:21 Does Fitzroy Simpson count as foreign?
Chris Hay after his first 13 games was the worst I've seen. Though that's probably because of the unrealistic expectations after THAT start :( Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Nomoreheroes on Monday, January 30, 2012, 23:28:43 Roy Wegerle should count as one of the best.
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: kaufman on Monday, January 30, 2012, 23:30:35 I know he did not make 20 appearances but as a kid I'll always remember Roy Wegerle coming to us on loan and him being a player like i've never seen before in a swindon shirt, I think that's why macari never took up the option of buying him as he seemed a luxury player at the time.
few years later and he goes for a million pounds. Fjortoft without doubt the best we've had. Worst I'd have John Buttigieg if i could but as it's 20 appearances I'll take Darren Bullock, i know he's English but judging how he went about playing football it seemed very foreign to him, almost alien. Ricky Shakes probably a contender, I missed a lot of the the 'todd' and 'Quinn' reign, it appears i didn't miss much Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Nemo on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 00:02:45 So to play by the rules - Sabin (Made Dossevi look like Maradona) he had speed and absolutely nothing else. He then turned out for the yellow filth which makes him worse than Hitler. See, I've always quite liked Sabin for his Oxford spell in which he successfully led them out of the League. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: jutty274 on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 00:57:09 Best: Jan, naturally. Surely Talia would have been worse, Griemink did actually have a few good games where as Talia had a few good minutes.Worst: So many possibilities. I'd have to go for Griemink, if pushed. Did Cuervo play more than 20 games? Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Boner on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 11:53:45 Roy Wegerle should count as one of the best. Forgot about him, he was fuckin brilliant, worst one has to be either Sabin or Zaaboub. Nestor Lorenzo was a typical South American, if he couldn't get the ball he was taking you out! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: horlock07 on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 12:22:55 Did Cuervo play more than 20 games? 18 starts + 20 from the bench - cannot believe it was that few, but think his appearances coincided with the short period that I was local enough to get to home games regularly! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: tans on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 12:27:18 I fucking loved philipe cuervo
Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: walrus on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 12:43:22 I fucking loved Eric Sabin... Don't forget he scored the winner versus Mansfield to end a 7 game losing streak under Andy King.
For me, Danny Invincibile was the best. Worst, with the 20 game qualifier, would have to be Dossevi - mainly as he was so bloody frustrating to watch. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: horlock07 on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 13:08:40 Don't think I ever had the plasure of watching sabin play, did his game extend beyond running towards the area really fast and then falling over?
Do I recall he won a penalty in something like each of his first 4 games? Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: horlock07 on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 13:09:10 I fucking loved philipe cuervo Me too he just looked class. Never the same player after he went blonde sadly! Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: fuzzy on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 12:45:39 I don't know how many times he filled the Player part of the Player Manager slot but Ossie wa a bit useful.
Worst? Dossevi gets my vote though Brian Kilkline was foreign in that he comes from a differnet planet. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: LucienSanchez on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 12:53:18 Me too he just looked class. Never the same player after he went blonde sadly! After he broke his leg in the reserves (against Millwall?) he was awful. Which was a shame, as before then he looked a player. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: paul backskin on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 12:57:59 i think ill go with mr invincible for my favourite player, that shined volley to keep us up. :( felt so many emotions that day.
Dossevi without a doubt has to be not just the worst foreign singing but the worst ever in all football. The guy was just fucking hopeless. i have never seen someone run like they were wearing the boots from a deep-sea diver. i cannot believe how often i kept turning up to watch that spaz :suicide: Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Huwwy on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 13:08:06 Does Fitzroy Simpson count as foreign? Yes. He was born in Bradford on Avon and they're all on a different planet over there. Nestor Lorenzo was the best for me. World Cup finalist, always looked like he was about to maim someone and be sent off. Opposing strikers seemed to sense it too. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: DV on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 13:42:39 i think ill go with mr invincible for my favourite player, that shined volley to keep us up. :( felt so many emotions that day. Now Pericard, he couldnt move... Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: cheltred69 on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 20:44:31 But he was a Jamaican international... Don't think being an international alone should qualify anyone as being foreign. My son could qualify to play for Serbia but has never been anywhere near the Balkans. Title: Re: Re: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Frigby Daser on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 20:58:09 Surely Talia would have been worse, Griemink did actually have a few good games where as Talia had a few good minutes. Come on...people forget Talia was player of the season one year and did bloody well in an atrocious side. He was judged after years of having a club legend in goal. Griemink was never, ever, a good goalkeeper. He made Phil Smith look as fierce as Schmiechel (the real one). Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 21:00:44 My recall is similar to Kaufman's... (one of the best, but not the best) Fjortoft for me as best. Title: Re: Best and worst foreign signings Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 21:34:29 Fjortoft was probably the best but Lorenzo was my favourite of the imports just for being a current world cup winner and for being an animal on the pitch!
Cuervo and Wegerle (only 7 games) were good. As for the worst, the skys the limit, good job there is a 20 game minimum or the list would be as long as your arm, Sabin, Darras (for his 1st season at least), Pericard, Casal (only 6 games), Onionbhaji (only 17 games) and Shakes if they count as technically both were British. I was in Kennedy's, an Irish bar here in Munich, :pint: mainly watching the Scotland-England rugby game. The footie was on one of the smaller screens. Jan-Agge has quite long hair now. He was, as usual talking a lot of sense, and telling the other pundits about our win at Southend.
Actually, the sound was off on the footie, but I'm sure he would have been talking about Swindon... |
