Title: Re: BBC footy results will never be the same again Post by: Nomoreheroes on Sunday, November 20, 2011, 10:16:34 Why all the fuss? Len Martin was THE voice of football results on the BBC, while Bob Colston was THE voice of football on ITV.
Tim Gudgin took over from Len Martin when he died. Before that he used to just do the Racing and Rugby. At least until Fearne Cotton tried to pretend she knew anything about music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwDccs8otbU Title: Re: BBC footy results will never be the same again Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, November 21, 2011, 18:57:06 Why all the fuss? Before that he used to just do the Racing and Rugby. Len was the doyen of result's readers, I listened to him for nigh on 40 years....with the advent of multi media, can't think I've listened to BBC at Sat tea time for years. Although did like Gudgin when he did rugby, in the days before professionalism, and the demise of clubs like Mosely, Blackheath, Maesteg, Ebbw Vale, Aberavon, Abertillery.....Hawick, Gala, Melrose and Herriot's Former Pupils. OK I know they're probably somewhere around still, but no longer considered important enough to have results read out. OK I know they're probably somewhere around still, but no longer considered important enough to have results read out. You're a man of class Reg. Hawick, Gala, Melrose are all about but unfortunately the pro game has killed off their importance somewhat. I was watching the highlights of TG's result reading and hearing the rugby and horse racing results is how I'll remember his voice. Title: Re: BBC footy results will never be the same again Post by: Ardiles on Monday, November 21, 2011, 22:27:48 Reading Bill McLaren's autobigraphy throws some light on rugby in the Scottish Borders. When the game turned professional, I think there was a Borders side for a while...drawn, supposedly, from the traditional (& fanatical) rugby playing towns mentioned above. But the story I heard was that the rivalry between the towns was too great - so much so that the umbrella professional side soon died.
Gala, Melrose, Hawick etc all still exist, but don't get the same press as Edinburgh and Glasgow...which just don't have the same resonance. The professional game in Scotland is really struggling, to tell the truth. Glasgow, for example, are practically giving tickets away at Firhill and still only attract crowds of approx 3,000. They're not even on the same page as the top sides in England and France. Title: Re: BBC footy results will never be the same again Post by: janaage on Monday, November 21, 2011, 22:37:23 You're not wrong Ardiles, Edinburgh have the same issue. I bought some Scotland 6 nations tickets and I think you could buy Edinburgh tickets for a fiver a piece, heavily subsidised. It's a real shame that the Borders have no chance of producing the talent of yesteryear. The days of John Jeffrey working on his farm then playing for Scotland are over.
I read that the Border Reivers struggled as Hawick and Melrose supporters weren't happy about going to Netherdale (Gala) to watch their home side. Then the SRU needed to cut costs and it was cheerio to the Borders. Good to see Melrose and Gala sitting top of the Scottish premiership, although Bill's Hawick are bottom. The reason why Scots sides are struggling to keep up with Eng & Fra = money, there is none up there, and no SKY TV funds to support the game.
